Re: Reiss Blog: Patriots to meet with WR Wes Welker

I'd give a 2nd for the Wanker. BB is attracted to him, not because he's an attractive young boy but because he's versitile. And signing him hurts a division rival.
Giving a division rival a 2nd round pick helps a division rival.

Name the last Patriots round 2 draft pick who wasn't a bust.
Eugene Wilson?

I'd consider taking a guy whose proven he can play, is multi-role versitile and hurts your competitor.
I disagree about it hurting Miami. This draft is pretty deep at WR, that 2nd round pick will likely land someone who could replace Welker fine (albeit not right away).

I'd much rather sign Brandon Stokley, who is at least as good of a slot WR, and wouldn't require giving up a draft pick.

Phony years on the end of the deal would not constitute a "poison pill," because if the Fins were to match the offer, they could cut him loose or re-structure before the phony years kick in just as easily as the Pats could.

A "poison pill" is when you put in some BS that could only affect the original team. Like something about where the player plays, or how he is paid relative to the other players at his position on the team, etc.

My last post wasn't particularly clear...

The whole idea is to saddle the matching team with an unreasonable financial committment. You use a poison pill to stick the Dolphins with the $38.5 million (guaranteed) if they match. Realistically, the deal itself is likely backloaded where he won't come close to seeing the $38.5 million, unless the Fins swallow a poison pill making the deal guaranteed...

Givng up a 2nd round pick doesnt improve the fins neither. You're assuming theyll make a good pick with our very very low 2nd rounder. Thats a gamble I feel favors us. We know who we are getting and what he is capable of. The fins on the other hand dont.

Brandon Stokley? Now there is a guy that is going to want more money then he is worth. He's not nearly as versatile as Welker and hell, the guy has only had 3 healthy season during his 9 yr. career. He's getting old, cant stay on the field and in his only over productive season, he was playing alongside harrison and wayne. No thankyou, lets give up that 2n round pick.

Stokley is about six years older than Welker.

Randy Meuller is (to put it mildly) an idiot. His teams have been and always will be medicore. From the Seahawks in the late 90's (8-8 every year), to the Saints (he got fired) and now to the Dolphins. Don't worry about the draft pick.

I agree. Also Troy Brown and all he brings is on the retirement bubble and if they see a guy who can replace/replicate Troy's versatility then you go for him. Versatility has always been a hallmark quality here-Welker fits that perfectly. It's a good signing.

I know this is off topic but can someone please tell my dumbass how to change my avatar and update my profile??? All I get is a white screen.

a 2nd round pick for wes seems fair. by the way does anyone need a bridge, because i got a beauty in brooklyn for sale oh and also anyone looking for beachfront property i have some for sale in cali . feel free to im me with offers lol:singing: :singing:

FYI Miami fans seem pretty stoked at the idea of getting a second for Welker.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that most Miami fans don't know as much about football as Bill Belichick does.

They probably would have been happy to get a 2nd round pick for Troy Brown early in his career, too. When it comes to players, Belichick values versatility over arrest warrants and end zone dances.

Schefter on NFL.com is saying the offer to Welker is 7 years at $38.5.

There better be some serious, serious back loaded money there. No way on God's green Earth is Welker worth even a sniff at that kind of money.

If they do end up extremely overpaying Welker, I do beileve this could be the start of some serious discontent building on the Pats. Giving up a second for Welker is one thing I'm not fond of, but overpaying to this extent is ludicrous.

And we let Branch go......nice....

Adam Schefter just said $10.5 would be guaranteed for Welker...

Schefter also pretty much called the Dolphins dumb for not tendering Welker a higher slot...

$10.5mil in bonuses seems like overpaying, yikes......

10.5 guaranteed isn't a bad deal at all, what Branch was looking at was that much as a signing bonus.

It could well be that the upfront money is the poison pill, although i'd match that if I were the fish.

Cousin,
The point to be made was that the Fins DID depend on him. Lousy QB's and all.
O.K. Lets role back the tape. Would you like to have had Welker out there on those two huge passing plays in the Colts game, or Reche. I like Reche but.....he is shaky and fights the ball sometime (Gaffney is the better wideout cousins!)

I am noo Fins fan, but I think Welker catches those two (I know, anyone can drop a pass), but I think WELKER IS A MONEY PLAYER AND THAT IS WHY THE GODFATHER AND SP WILL TAKLE A SHOT AT HIM. Let's take a vote here cousins. Who would have liked to have seen Welker on those two plays? Would Troy drop those either?

Troy Brown-Money Player
Wes Welker-Money Player
BB and SP see the similarities

I agree with your assessment. Gaffney is better than Reche Caldwell, and I fully expect that it will be Gaffney and Welker starting next year (unless the Pats add someone else or Chad Jackson Turns It On bigtime).

Welker would've made those catches in the AFCCG, I guarantee it. Reche couldn't take the pressure. Looked like he didn't even want to be out there on the field once the going got tough. Not the Patriots' kind of player.

Another thing is that Welker is not afraid to go over the middle, or try to make something happen after the catch. Caldwell wouldn't go near the middle of the field if his life depended on it, and every time he catches the ball he immediately falls to the ground or hurries out of bounds.
