Enough "pink" already!

there are more new cases of prostrate cancer each year in the U.S. than any other type of cancer.

(LOL cue the funny Family Guy prostrate exam clip.)

you can get cancer by lying prone?

If so.... Someone better warn Kim Kardashian that she is a prime candidate....

A few years old...
Among the big cancers, breast cancer receives the most funding per new case, $2,596 — and by far the most money relative to each death, $13,452. Notably, prostate cancer, the most common cancer, receives the least funding per new case at just $1,318. But on a per-death basis it ranks second, with $11,298 in N.C.I. funds.

N.C.I. cancer funding based on 2006 death rates and incidence rates

Cancer (Deaths) N.C.I. Funding per Death
Lung (162,460) $1,630
Colon (55,170) $4,566
Breast (41,430) $13,452
Pancreas (32,300 ) $2,297
Prostate (27,350) $11,298
Cancer (New cases)
N.C.I. Funding per New Case
Prostate (234,460) $1,318
Breast (214,640) $2,596
Lung (174,470) $1,518
Colon (106,680) $2,361
Pancreas (33,730) $2,200

Breast cancer activists are well organized, volunteer to participate in studies and get media and entertainment support. Men's prostate cancer, not so much. Men tend not to be social activists, especially older men.

Don't know if you guys remember Dennis Hopper a few years back. Went from an active healthy 60s guy to a skeleton in a wheelchair before dying. Prostate cancer spreads thru the lymph nodes to the pelvis and usually kills as painful debilitating bone cancer. I have 2 neighbors both going through this spread right now.

I have long thought the attention the breast cancer campaign gets is all out of whack compared to the attention other types get ... But I also figure... If they can crack one type of cancer it may give them a foothold to deal with other types as well.
But I am also tired of watching sporting events .... Especially NFL football when everyone has that stupid neon pink.

P.S. Tell your friends to hang in there!

I absolutely despise this pink nonsense, if someone wants to fight breast cancer they can do a lot more by actually giving money to support cancer research instead of wearing something pink.

I am totally in support of the NFL going pink to support this really important cause.

But I think a whole month of it is a bit much. Maybe one or two weeks - enough to highlight the need and to show support, but I think it goes on too long.

I'm all for saving the boobies, but I think the NFL goes wayyy too far.

Yeah its not about the many women who go through hell, have their lives torn apart or die from the disease, its about saving boobies. Some people should know when to just not comment.

I agree, but for a different reason. I am sure those doing breast cancer research would much rather the NFL make a larger donation than spend their funds on all things pink. Maybe they could make a different type of cancer the focus (and the donation recipient) each week.

I think that would kind of defeat the purpose of marketing their league to women

IMO the NFL wants more female fans. And this is the politically correct disease of the day to support. The evidence for that is that they spend a whole month on it and act like it's the only disease out there. They should just do it for one week. One whole month seems a bit obnoxious to me. It's the same thing with Hispanic Awareness Month. It's all a potential market for them. They're trying to get hispanics and females to buy more merchandise, tickets etc. It's all about the money (to the NFL).

As a woman, I never thought this was a marketing ploy for women. It's marketed as breast cancer touches everyone, mothers, sisters, wives, daughters (and even sometimes your male relatives).

Football 101 is marketing for women. Fighting breast cancer is not. I just think they've gone too far with the gimmick and they should have a few pink things for one week and give the rest of the $$ they would have spent on pink stuff to the cause itself. On a related note, my 15 year old (when he saw what I was posting about) said he thinks the pinks stuff looks "cool." So there you go. Different opinions on a serious topic.

Have you ever had a close friend or family member with breast cancer? Calling this a "politically correct" disease insults women and will NOT make them bigger NFL fans.

It's not insulting women. My wife says the same thing. It's politically correct to donate to this disease more than any other. There is nothing anti-women about saying that.
It sells more pink jerseys and paraphernalia. That's how it makes money.

... or post links to meat packing plants when another poster inquires about NFL front office protocol. hee hee
"Well, when this type of thing happened at the ol' meat packing plant, this is what the mustached shirt sleeves did in manager's trailer out back."

Pink penalty flags. Pink first-down line. Pink shoes, gloves, towels -- :frusty:

Yes, breast cancer is a worthy charitable cause and yes, the NFL deserves credit for flying that flag (at least initially). But several years in, this pet "cause celebre" has assumed a weird life of its own that has crossed into cynical marketing overkill. When people like my fiancee even complain about it (she's a registered nurse), I think it's time to take notice. Why not prostate cancer awareness? Colon cancer awareness? Let's face it, the NFL has big-time influence on society and could be casting a wider net, especially after so many years of pushing "pink."

I agree!

Of course my idea about promoting colonoscopies by using brown flags is laughed at.:)

Some people should PRETEND to have a sense of humor.

All of the pink items are auctioned off with the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Cancer is a terrible disease. Every one of us has been affected in one way or another. Breast cancer in particular is a very big deal in my family for reasons I needn't go into here. I appreciate what the NFL is doing here and my own opinion is that dismissing this as marketing to women is pretty cynical.

Sorry to be a scold but I think this thread is not this site's finest hour.

I'm sorry for your family's troubles, but why do you think that makes you special? I, for one, am aware of breast cancer and tired of the pink crap.

BTW, Zues, My father had rectal cancer. Should I demand the NFL have month of, say, neon brown flags?

Look to yourself for a "not finest hour."

No point in arguing about cancers here. Just wanted to raise awareness of a disease that males for very understandable reasons don't like talking about. Although cancers really are different some significant aspects of med research may well apply across the broad spectrum of the very complex disease that is cancer. Let's leave it at that.

(glad we're not using brown colon cancer or cream colored prostrate flags)

I always saw it as a cause that would get 100% support, solely because everyone has a mother, and 99% of people have a soft spot for theirs.

Sorry, I find as much humor in that as I do in making fun of the mentally challenged, or making racist jokes.

Cool.

10 char.

The point of the campaigns is to raise awareness.

It's fair to say that it appears to be working, but the people running the campaign believe it needs to continue.

It's as much about men watching the game being able to talk about the disease with their partners or daughters as it is women.

Its attempting to make it a subject for normal family conversation so women go and get the exam.

Many health issues make people squeamish or uncomfortable when talking about it, this is what they are trying to overcome.

Maybe just put aside the mild inconvenience it seems to create, its not ruining your life.
