PFT: Gronk unlikely to return vs. the Bengals

Must have been the same source that claimed that Gronk and Amendola are very likely to play against ATL....

How so? Aside from Brady, Gronk is the most important piece to the passing game and opens up a lot in the running game through his blocking. The team is also 4-0 at the quarter mark. Again, there's no need to rush him back if he isn't ready to play yet.

How is it not getting old?

The fact that we want him healthy in January and Feb and that it is more important has nothing to do with this tiresome act. If he isnt healthy or ready to play than it is the right decision but again doesnt mean its not getting old.

Its a tough sport and there are plenty of guys playing through injuries and working back from major injuries that appear to be either working harder to get back or more willing to play through pain. Slater and Amendola come to mind.

Every situation is different and Gronk and the team need to do what is best but I cant help but get frustrated/tired of this especially when compared to two mentioned above. Slater broke a wrist a few weeks ago and is back on the practice field already Gronk broke his a season ago and had Back surgery months ago with a supposed 10 week recovery in which we are now 16 weeks.

Sorry but the fact that Gronk is Gronk and the fact that the Playoffs are more important does not change anything about this timeline and my frustration. If your fine with one of the most important and talented peices to this team looking scared and like a female private part while others on the team tough it out then thats your choice. Again the team and Gronk should not pay attention to the noise when making this choice but I cant sit idle.

So who plays TE ? Hooman and Mulligan ? Even when Gronk comes back, we need to draft AH's replacement. Thought it was gonna be Sudfeld, but that ship has sailed.

I don't know why people assume that if the Pats don't play him in October that he will be any more healthy in January than if he played in October. If he misses this game and plays next week, does that radically increase his odds for being able to play in the playoffs?

Either he is ready or he isn't. I seriously doubt their decision to play him or not to play him has anything to do with his health in January.

It is safe to assume Ridley isn't playing even before this news. You don't practice, you don't play.

Gronk's bag was packed last week too. He didn't travel. So that doesn't mean anything.

1. The team is 4-0.

2. Back injuries/surgeries are among the most serious of any professional sport, particularly a contact sport.

3. Gronk re-broke his forearm after returning before his body was really ready to last season.

4. Gronk is the second most important player on the offense.

I spelled out numbers one and four in the first post. Added numbers two and three to this one. Sorry you're getting tired of the guy wanting to make sure he's healthy in order to ensure his future at his profession. But all I really care about is him being fully healthy before returning. I cared about the same thing with Mayo in '09, Chung a couple of years ago, and both Hernandez and Gronk last year.

It's pretty evident that if he was ready to play and could make a difference, he'd be out there. I also subscribe to the theory that nether the Pats nor anyone in the NFL operates on the theory of saving someone for the playoffs, or even a game two weeks from now. If he doesn't get out there, and/or the team doesn't play well, you've "saved" him for nothing. So far we've been okay, but as the injuries pile up it gets more worrisome, and it IS frustrating and getting old, whatever the reason is, that he isn't out there.

Agreed

I'm just the messenger.... ;)

I've followed the Pats closely for a long time. I think this qualifies me as "a source familiar with the Patriots' thinking". Considering how badly the media butchered the 'Patriots/Gronk rift' story, it's going to be hard for me to take any stories of this nature seriously. Especially when they're openly admitting that their source doesn't actually have any inside information.

All of that having been said, if he's not ready then he shouldn't play. When he is ready, he will play. It's a bummer, and it leaves the Pats dangerously thing at TE this weekend if true, but I'd rather be dealing with these problems then have him come back too early and potentially get reinjured as a result.

Lets rehash another poster said this was getting old and you asked "How so?" and brought some points while accurate really have nothing to do with the frustration. I fully admit that the Patriots and Gronk need to ignore the noise and do what they feel is best for the team and for Gronk but aside from them being completely transparent (which for obvious reasons they should not) we are left without a full picture and it is frustrating.

1. The team is 4-0.

This point holds true for every player on the injury report and if they all took the approach that they should not risk further injury when we can afford a loss we would probably have some players playing iron man football.

2. Back injuries/surgeries are among the most serious of any professional sport, particularly a contact sport.

True but if he is going to have cronic back issues or even occasional its going to be annoying. There is really is no getting around watching players sit is annoying.

3. Gronk re-broke his forearm after returning before his body was really ready to last season.

Assuming your right and his body wasnt ready last year and it wasnt just a fluke that doesnt really have any bearing on now. One mistake last year should not mean waiting an extra 5 weeks this year.

4. Gronk is the second most important player on the offense.

Actually so long as he isnt playing he is tied for the least important player. And if we use this logic as you apply it should we not sit Brady every once in while.

Look I cant say it enough I am not trying to rush him back before he is ready but I find it extremely annoying that he is not. And I dont really understand the attitude of pointing out he is the 2nd best player on the team but not caring about when he returns with this attitude why even play him at all until the playoffs?

thank you:rocker:

Hear you but on the flip side, every game is key and Gronk not being there makes it harder to win.

Let's say the Pats lose to Cinci and Gronk comes back against NO.

Two things are at play. One, Gronk hasn't had a game to acclimate so he will be a bit rusty or not as ready as he would be if he had played in week 5. Two, NO is really good and will be a challenge with or without Gronk.

My gut is that there are people in Gronk's camp who are being too cautious and this is their fault. My gut is that he's ready. I have NO WAY of knowing if my gut is just wrong.

Did your gut stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?

My gut is that BB if even talks to people in some player's "camp"...

he just laughs,
tells them to go #$#@ themselves,
and does what he wants to do based on medical opinions.

You're making a lot of assumptions based on heresay, some of it already proven to be false. I think if the doctors ok'd Gronk to play he'd play, simple as that.
I'm sure he wants to play and the team wants him to play but you don't mess around with a back and what may be 10 weeks for an average doesn't mean everyone can play after 10 weeks.

4-zip.

What's the hurry?.
