Tony Romo begins working the refs in advance of the Cowboys’ game against Denver
Y! SPORTS

The Denver Broncos and the Dallas Cowboys are slated to square off on Sunday afternoon. And while anyone not wearing a blue-star tattoo expects Denver to roll handily — the Broncos are roughly eight-point favorites, even on the road — that's not stopping Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo from trying to shade some matchups in his favor.

Romo, speaking to the media on Tuesday, zeroed in on the Broncos' secondary. "They grab, they hold, they've almost put a lot of pressure on the refs – whether or not they're going to call the game close or not," he said. "If they get called once or twice, that's a good thing. But they're all over guys as far as using the little tricks, I guess you could say, that good linebackers and good secondaries use when they're playing man coverage."

Romo also noted that he didn't think the Broncos' secondary had been penalized enough, but as USA Today noted, Denver has had ten penalties in that area: five for defensive pass interference, four for defensive holding, and one for illegal contact. Seven penalties came against the New York Giants, which seems, well, unnecessary.

Obviously Romo's trying to get into the refs' ears even before the game starts, encouraging them to call the Broncos more closely than they otherwise might. Whether you see this as canny gamesmanship or preemptive whining probably depends on how much you like Romo and the Cowboys in the first place.

We await Peyton Manning's reply.

I wonder how many Offensive PI's his WR's have gotten away with.

Those only get called 1% of the time despite happening on almost every throwing play.

2 thoughts come to mind:

1. I would imagine that many QB's lobby the refs at some point about different issues, some of it occurring prior to the game in casual discussion, and others occurring during the game when examples are played out. The only difference in this case is that most do not choose to do it through the mouthpiece of the media like Romo has done here.

2. If Romo's thoughts can help to keep an eye on the Broncos secondary down the road for a call here or there--then all the better.

Imagine the media apocalypse had TFB said that....

Count me as being all for every team except the Pats voicing their concerns when it comes to fair officiating when facing the chosen one.

The best qb ever, Brady, also whine to refs a lot.

Well when they miss a call ray Charles could see I would be upset.

He doesn't cry during a game. He is a fiery competitor and when he sees a foul he voices his opinion. He yells when they miss a call being in the league as long as he has, he knows the rules.

but when another qb does it, it is whining. not this instance with romo, but other times. he does whine a lot. "voices opinions" more often than all qbs lol. sorry man.

As much as you think Brady "whines" to the refs (which I believe is more of voicing his opinion) when have you ever heard Brady talk to the media and try to call out the refs for the next games? When have you ever heard Brady whine about his team mates?

Every time Brady talks to the media he says how much he respects the next team they are going to play or puts blame on himself for certain mistakes. He never throws anyone under the bus or tries to pass blame. New receivers? Not their faults its his. Attitude problems? He's working on it. Got beat? They were a tough team and a good team and that is why they lost.

This is obviously just my opinion but I don't think Brady "whines" as much as you think he does. And surely not as much as Romo who is in the media now calling out the refs or the Forehead complaining about the schedule last week.

Re: OT: Tony Romo begins working the refs in advance of the Cowboys’ game against Den

Every player constantly asks for penalties, even when it's a good no-call, and Brady certainly does it too. I've never heard him call out an opposing secondary for cheating leading up to a game, though, I can imagine that firing them up. I guess if Romo feels strongly enough about how much they've gotten away with, he might risk it to put a bug in the officials' ears to keep a closer eye on what's happening back there, but I suspect he might pay for it if the Denver D takes it as a challenge. Of course this is all academic... he could play his best game and they'll still get blown out.

You just know that Manning is gonna whine about some "liquored up ref" after the game. It won't matter if they win or lose. He has some genetic trait that forces him to throw people under the bus, to divert blame for anything that goes bad, etc.

Considering how many people Manning has thrown under the bus, it's a wonder it can move anywhere.

I agree with you in the sense that EVERY quarterback asks for calls, and every QB points out instances during the games where they feel that pass interference or some other foul may have occurred. Brady does this in many of the games, but you also have to remember that there are an average of about 75 offensive snaps or so. To see him complain about one or two calls here and there in 75 snaps doesn't make him a whiner. It makes him like any other quarterback, possibly even with a lower percentage since they run more plays than 95%+ of any other teams.

That said, we shouldn't single out any "one" QB over another, so I don't have much problem with what Romo said myself. The obvious difference here is when it's done through the media, which Brady has never once done in his career. The QB's who talk to the media about blown calls etc are the ones who are really "whining." Acting fiery and competitive on the field at times is something that you want from your QB.

I also wouldn't get caught up in fan/media misconceptions either, because you really aren't correct in this thinking. I'm not sure how often you watch the Patriots over the years, or if you have access to all of the games or not, but Tom Brady has statistically gotten one of the lowest rates of roughing the passer calls in all of the NFL. The whole misconception about him whining really started when he came back from tearing his ACL and another player went for a low dive on his knee, which had become a rule after Carson Palmer went down in the 2005 playoffs. Most refer to it as the "Brady rule," when in all actuality it is the "Carson Palmer rule," and was developed in 2005--long before Brady's injury. It's just being uneducated. It's also important to note that the player who went low on his newly surgically repaired knee was none other than Terell Suggs, who makes it his job to remind every one how much he hates Brady at every chance he has.

Fans and media from outside of the fanbase somehow have this misconception that he "whines" and gets his way, but that couldn't be further from the truth. He doesn't do anything at all any differently from any other QB. If anything, he probably does it less than many other QBs. It's only when an obvious foul has occurred that he will act fired up to the refs, and who wouldn't do that? The reason why people like you think that Brady whines more than other NFL QB's is simply because he's a high profile QB, and that makes people notice more due to his success.

Next, you'll be claiming that he isn't "tough" too, even though he's played through multiple major injuries that we don't even hear about until after the season, and hasn't missed any games outside of the one season when he tore his ACL in week one. That's another popular misconception fabricated by uneducated fans (not claiming that you are one of those people) who really don't follow the team.

If you want to see a QB who whines to the refs and is constantly unable to play through injuries in every single season, look no further than Ben Roethlisberger from Pittsburgh.
