Report: Season-ending torn Achilles for Wilfork

God$@#%@ Mother@#%$#% son of a @%#%@#!!!!!!!

Nothing confirmed yet. Take a deep breath and put your keys back in your pocket. You don't need to head for the Tobin yet.. ;)

The problem is that previous times of "trial by fire" have resulted in the Pats not making the play-offs. 2002 comes to mind when they were without a true NT.

They may go with Francis, Forston, Jones and Vellano, but the think that someone like Hampton/Pouha bring is veteran leadership. That's something that can't be replaced.

Isn't there already veteran leadership in Kelly and Nink? Granted they haven't won any Superbowls, but neither had any of our DL in 2002...

I would imagine an Achilles tear is not easy to come back from. Ask Troy Polamalu who's struggled with his the last few years. I think he's finally got a handle on it this year. The hardest part is the scar tissue that builds up from the injury. Which is very tight and has to be worked out of there. It may be an even harder thing for a big guy like Wilfork.

Belichick just said on Weei that it is very unlikely Vince will play again this year.

People can forget about Seymour. Levon Reid Tweeted that Seymour hasn't been training since January and has dropped 60lbs since last season. Ron Borges called Seymour and Seymour said there is no way he is coming to the Pats.

When asked if he'd come back to the Patriots, where he was part of all three Super Bowl championship teams, Seymour chuckled, responding "No way.

Reported in a snarky way that only Borges can report.

Yep.. Nice of you to respond to a post that was 2 hours old and after new information comes out..

The 2002 team had Bruschi, Vravel, Hamilton, Pleasant, Ty Law, Ted Johnson and Lawyer Milloy back there. Yet they couldn't hold up without a NT since Steve "I'm not the Comedian" Martin flapped his trap more than Al Gore talking on Global Warming than he did actual playing.

And that team was coming off a SB.

I'm almost certain that the Patriots are not interested in asking him to come back either. Interesting that Borges didn't ask the team how they feel about it.

So I am not allowed to quote a post to update any info? I wasn't being a smart ass I was just saying new info came out. A little over reaction on your post.

Tedy Bruschi: "This coaching staff might have to find a way to creatively use Brandon Spikes as a defensive lineman."

Sounds like we may go 3-4 and have Spikes basically crash down every play.

Said it a few times in the past but - Brandon Spikes 4-3 DE.

He has that natural ability of timing the snap count and his lack of speed/pass coverage is essentially negated with him on the DL instead of LB.

Then the choice is for a base defense, would you want to go with:
Ninkovich-Kelly-Jones-Spikes

Or

Ninkovich-Vellano-Kelly-Jones

With the top option it gives Vellano and Kelly a rotation to keep them somewhat fresh.

Whatever the specific issue is, Wilfork had successful surgery on it according to a tweet from his wife that was re-tweeted by Rappaport, Reiss, and Howe.

...excuse my ignorance but, is it official? I haven't seen anything stating Wilfork to IR ? Do we know for a fact he's out for the season ? I know, i know, it's a severe injury and he's probably out for the season but ... is there a 0.1% probability he's not?

Interesting thoughts on Spikes at DE. What about putting Hightower on the line on early downs and shifting back to LB on passing downs?

Where does Spikes provide value as a defensive end? He's too small to set the edge and lacks the agility and burst to get to the QB. The two things that he does really well are time snap counts so that he can shoot gaps against interior linemen and hit guys really hard.

If it comes down to having a 250-260 pound regular defensive end, I'd rather it be Buchanan than Spikes. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see the base defensive line become

Ninkovich-Kelly-Jones-Buchanan

With Jones being able to move out to DE and Vellano come in at DT on obvious running downs.

One of Spikes biggest strengths is shedding blockers and stuffing the run so putting him at DE would solidify the run defense (IMO) because you don't need to take him off the field on passing downs anymore.

Another advantage of putting him down at DE is when he jumps the snap he will have half a step on the OT so may provide some pass rush too - in fact, Florida used him at RDE on some passing downs.

That would work too but at this point Buchanan is probably best suited to be a situational pass rusher, where so far he's proven to be effective.

I was wondering the same thing and mentioned it in a different thread and got snickered at for it. I'm hoping it's "only" a partial tear or something. Suggs came back from his achilles tear in like two weeks.....

This is indeed a crazy world.

A player is injured on Sunday night. And on Tuesday, folks are insisting that we should know FOR SURE whether he will be out for the year.

???????

I read Bruschi' chat - what he says he would do is play a base 3-4 and send Spikes every time. I like that idea more than moving Spikes to DE. There are lots of different ways to send him and I like Spikes starting out standing and playing down hill.
