Report: Season-ending torn Achilles for Wilfork

I agree with you entirely, but my theory (right or wrong) is that the 2 games in the four day period to start the season may have had some negative effect on his play.

I thought he bounced back pretty well vs TB last week.

All in all, I still tend to think that a Wilfork at 75% is fairly effective and better than a lot of other players.

You theory could have some merit if not for the fact that Ducasse also had 2 games in 4 days and he dominated that battle.

That being said, you seem very reasonable. Looking into your crystal ball (so you can make some assumptions) what would you guess would happen next year with Wilfork? Cut.....Traded......Paid in full.......comes back with paycut.........retires? Will he recover fully?

Seriously - what on Earth are we going to do? I know we often say "it's next man up" but this is big and it would be too optimistic to think we'd be fine with what we have at DT.

How realistic is calling up Seymour? A trade?

Available DL Free Agents (as of today):

"Andre Carter (DE): The Oakland Raiders released Carter because of his inability to generate a pass rush during the pre-season. Carter worked out for the New England Patriots recently. He earned the lone Pro Bowl selection of his career with the Patriots in 2011 when he had 10 sacks in 14 games.

Richard Seymour (DT): The Atlanta Falcons were interested in Seymour during the off-season but his price tag was too high. Seymour will remain on the sidelines unless he lowers his salary demands.

Others: Mark Anderson (DE), Justin Bannan (DT), Rocky Bernard (DT), Casey Hampton (DT), Lawrence Jackson (DE), Sione Po’uha (DT), Kyle Vanden Bosch (DE)"

NFL Free Agents Still Available Include Michael Turner, Jason Smith, Antoine Winfield

Not much there....

Casey Hampton has been a pro bowler and on a great defense for many years...his best days are long gone but even at 50% of his old self he would be better than what we have on the current roster.

While true about the comparison of Ducasse, I wouldn't think the responsibilities are nearly the same. Ducasse wasn't dealing with two QB's who had the potential to run, scramble, and throw--nor was there quite the "unknown" factor of what to expect.

He also wasn't dealing with a high paced tempo since Ducasse plays the offensive side of the ball in the Jets system. If Ducasse had played the defensive side of the ball vs the high tempo BUF system in their first game, it's possible that he too may have been a bit winded four days later.

I'd also think that anytime both players are gassed, it would tend to favor the offensive lineman a bit, but that's just my opinion. I don't want to get into a right vs wrong thing, b/c I have no idea who is closer to being correct. I'm just stating a theory that Wilfork himself talked about prior to game 1 vs BUF when he claimed how hard it was on him to deal with higher paced offenses, and that he had actually circled the teams on the schedule during the summer who used those kinds of offenses. I would think that he didn't have his best stuff four days later vs the NYJ.

I could be wrong, but he wasn't being listed on the injury report at that time and had to start off the season with 2 games in a four day period. That may have contributed to the poor play vs Ducasse.

I felt that he bounced back rather nicely last week vs Tampa Bay myself, and I thought that the majority of the media agreed.

Yes, I believe that we see a fall in play. Wilfork is a monster to deal with, even if injured and not himself. He's still taking up 2 men on any given play as a space eater--even if it's not in a 3-4 scheme he's still effective in that role.

Let's hope that we can bring someone else in, along with continuing to get the most out of Vellano/Chris Jones/practice squader.

Vellano did have 1 of the Pats 2 sacks of Matt Ryan. You guys need to take a deep breath and step back and see what happens. Vince went out in the 1st quarter and we still won. The last 10 points we gave up were cause of a Brady fumble which turned the ball over on downs and a recovered onside kick so the Falcons had a short field for both those scores.

How realistic is calling up Seymour?

Not very realistic at all.

Actually, calling up Ty Law is more realistic.

Seymour didn't sign with the Falcons who showed interest during the FA period b/c he wants to be paid closer to what he was making in OAK (ridiculous money), so the financial aspects alone wouldn't be worth even considering.

There's also the fact that Seymour recently reiterated his previous comments about possibly playing with "31 teams in the NFL." The only team that he said he would never play for, obviously is NE.

Then there's the whole Belichick not liking him and the bad blood thing to consider too, but that's too far down on the list to even get to.

Nittany Lions NT DaQuan Jones will be Belichick's big first dive into Penn States graduates under O'Brien next year, maybe in the 3rd round.....I don't expect Wilfork back either unless he asks for a lot less than he is worth.

Maybe he retires as well...who knows?

How am I now being lumped in with "you guys?"

All I've done is reiterated your exact post on most levels. The quote that you responded to has no mention whatsoever about not liking Vellano, although I did mention the concern with the lack of depth on another page--but in a very optimistic manner.

I'm not sure at all why you decided to choose my post to respond to, but I tend to agree with you.

It's the lack of depth on the DL that may pose the bigger problem than the loss of Wilfork himself, although it's going to be a loss no matter how you look at it as Wilfork was a leader, and a big bodied space eater that will be quite difficult to replace.

I have Sunday ticket and have seen Seymour play the past 2 years....believe me,the guy has nothing left in the tank and anything other than vet minimum would be overpaying for his services.

My guess is that we'll likely bring up one of the PS players, along with continuing to give Vellano and Chris Jones opportunities before going out and paying anyone else outside of the system--even though it's much more realistic to bring in an outsider on the DL than other positions.

Agreed.

I'm thinking we might see Francis or Forston called up from the practice squad.

Maybe we will now see even more of Mike Buchanan on the front side of the defense.

I said multiple times before this kid is going to be good and he hasn't disappointed me yet .... Time for this kid to shine as a rookie.

This is nightmare news, severely limiting what we can do on defense. The only guy they had in camp with a similar body to Wolfork's was Anthony Rashad White, a rookie free agent who left the team under murky circumstances. He came over from the Steelers.

Is it time to give him a call?

Extra work on Tommy Kelly might not be a good thing as he's an older vet, too. D-line just got a little desperate.

Someone may remind us that two years ago we had a choice of three highly rated DTs in the draft--Devon Still, Jerel Worthy, and Kendall Reyes--and instead shocked everyone by taking current STer Tavon Wilson. Oh, I just did. Sorry.

I hate to say this but looking at the facts, this could be the last we see of Vince Wilfork in a Patriots uniform if this injury is season ending.

"No way", you say.... but I'm sure you would have said the same thing about Seymour. Here are some of the facts:

1.) Wilfork has not played well this year....not at all. Maybe he was injured maybe not, but he hasn't been listed on the injury report other than "foot" and he was listed as probable.

2.) Wilfork seems to be very out of shape this year. During the 2012 season he entered the season in much better shape. This year he looks much heavier.

3.) In his career, I don't remember him ever having to rehab from a major injury.

4.) Wilfork will be 33 years old next November.

5.) According to "Over the cap", Wilfork will count $11.6 million against the cap next year. Of that, $8.0 million could be saved, if he was cut or traded.

Forget your homer-fan love for Wilfork for a second and look at this like a cold hearted Patriots executive.

Wilfork will be 33 years old next season. He will be coming off a major injury during which he can't work out (at least with his legs) but he can eat.
Do you see him being more explosive being a year older, coming off a major injury, and being out of shape...or less explosive?

Is the Vince Wilfork of next year at 33 years old worth $8 million???

I say no....and I was thinking this before the injury.

Unless he is willing to take a major paycut I don't see Wilfork playing for the Patriots....again.

No, Wilfork will play next year, He is front and center publicly for the pats. Big diff over Seymour.

Okay, so if his knee was bothering him this badly, why has he been playing?

This is some crappy news to wake up to...

Terrible news, no way to sugarcoat it.

Next man up I guess. What else is there?

this is shaping up as a really weird year for the Pats.....

I like both Pryor and Forston.

Here are the 2014 DL FA's should any of these teams be sellers
