Immediate Game Thoughts - I think the Pats just punted again edition

  • I didn't like Mayock last night. He kept saying the Refs CLEARLY made the correct call every time there was a borderline call. And who cares if Talib didn't go out of bounds right away at end??? That's not showboating.

I saw him dancing down the sidelines AFTER the dive from Mangold. The play was over and he was celebrating but who could blame him? He just put away the game and anyone would have done that. I couldn't see what was so unusual about it other than why he went out of bounds at all. Shouldn't he have dropped to the ground and killed the clock?

Yeah, Mayock was insinuating that it's bad sportsmanship not to take a knee or run directly out of bounds on that play. The guy (Maycok) has just become too opinionated for my tastes. Luckily I don't have NFL Network so I won't have to deal with him and all the brutal Thursday night matchups this year (thought KC/Philly is an intriguing matchup next week).

First off, can't wait to get Gronkowski back. And that means for good. Hoping Aaron Dropson changes his name back to Dobson because he definitely has some of the tools to be a major weapon on this team. Separation was nice to see. Although I was highly upset with the drops it appears Brady kept throwing his way. He will get better, especially when Amendola and Gronk are in the lineup with him. He still has a lot to learn on some of the timing and routes with this offense. It's his first game and he will get better.

Is it just me or is Ridley tip toeing on the line similiar to what Maroney did. Ill give him a pass because the run blocking wasn't very good and maybe the Jets rush defense has improved. He does so much better when he run's hard at the hole and falls down to get the extra 2 or 3 yards.

Again as a fan I leave this game thinking they left points on the board with the score not being indicative of what they are capable of doing due to sloppy play and mental errors,

The one thing that works against this team is the lack of practice. From the collective bargaining. BB is one of the best teachers in the game IMO. Maybe one of the best ever. With no two a days and limited full pads this team just doesn't seem ready. Not to say every other team isn't in the same boat but as the season progresses I think his teachings and methods will sink in as the season goes on. Especially for the new guys. Very well may be part of the November and December success.

Nice observations as always. But you can't compare it to 2003 until Mike Cloud is randomly activated, runs like Emmitt Smith for one game, then does nothing the rest of the season.

Dobson has to catch those balls, the bomb was inexcusable! Ditto for Thompson..

guess you've not done much watching of longballs........it's low percentage all around the planet......

I know this is bait, but I'll bite:

How can a UDFA be a bust you complete fool?

Ummm, maybe he's saying that Thompkins is "a never was, who will never be". That's all I got...:D

Defense was awesome. The drops were ridiculous but I'm not overly concerned about the passing game when the run was even worse. I know the jets are stout but geez. Games like this are the exact reason why I complain about having so many rb on the roster. I feel like only the packers run the ball less than us but we have more rb than everybody in the league.

Also, what happened to our screen game. Is the bubble screen the only kind of screen we know. With guys dropping everything I was hoping to see some dump offs etc to leon washington. We are seriously not using his open field abilities at all.

Well, some of his runs did look like that but there were several where he would tiptoe until he saw a hole and then he plowed straight ahead like we like to see. I knew the running game would be a focus tonight but the thing is the Jets knew it too. I mean, besides Edelman, who could we reliably throw it to? No one. Easy to stuff the run in that case. That is why I loved that Brady kept going deep. Why not? The rooks did enough to score and Thompkins almost had that TD that would have sealed the game way, way earlier.

The ball was overthrown, not all Dobson's fault.

Brady had a number of off throws last night, this wasn't all on the receivers, plenty if blame to go around.

  • Gostowski has to be better. He completely shanked that missed FG. And why are the Pats always sacrificing yards to get him in the middle of the field when there is time on the clock?? Getting five to ten yards closer seems to be the wiser decision.

That's a good question for a trigonometry class.

Furthermore -- and I think can speak for Pats loyalists everywhere in saying that they join me in this -- I'd appreciate you sharing your play calls that are guaranteed to gain 5-10 yards each.

There were plenty of positives to extrapolate for those fans capable of a little foresight/projection.

It is great to see WR's winning on the deep routes - yes there is a tough learning curve with rooks - but no amount of Wes Welkers are going to stop teams like the Ravens and Jets from jamming all the short to intermediate routes.

Every game we sneak the win, is another game close to making the post-season and an opportunity to see how this team looks later in the year when they are further along the learning curve.

Its GREAT for the D to been seen to be stepping up - ego and confidence play no small part in performance, and who cares if it is back-to-back rookie QB's - this defense has done a nice job sealing games for the team - again, this will stand us in good stead for the bigger games later in the year.

As the undoubted team MVP Brady needs to start doing a better job with his long ball - I have commented on this issue over the last few seasons - he is a very consistent over thrower on the deeper routes and with less consistent, erratic performers like Dobson you need to reward them when they win vs man coverage.

Brady does also need to tone down the continuous berating of his team-mates - this behaviour is probably beneficial when directed at Vets but is more likely to be detrimental to rookies in their first few starts.

No need to blow smoke up their asses, but a little less chewing out and a little more constructive 1-2-1 on the sidelines would be alot better.

Fans label the team soft when we are offensive juggernaut involved in weekly shootouts, then complain when the same team shows the enviable ability to grind out the win when playing at way less than optimum level.

Everyone needs to stop freaking out. I'm not trying to be a pollyanna, but the awful execution we saw last night can be cleaned up. But the bottom line is receivers were getting separation. The wideouts couldn't catch a cold and Brady missed one or two. That will get better with time. The timing is just a little off on all these plays.

The key takeaway for me though is that middle part - separation. Dobson got behind the D more last night than Lloyd did all season. We'll start hitting it.

  • My boy Allen the Punter kind of choked on that last punt and was inconsistent but for now I'm happy that he didn't muff the snap or the holds
  • Gostowski has to be better. He completely shanked that missed FG. And why are the Pats always sacrificing yards to get him in the middle of the field when there is time on the clock?? Getting five to ten yards closer seems to be the wiser decision.

That actually looked like a botched hold in real time to me, but I haven't studied a replay.

Our WR's were not running to the sticks last night...they were two to three yards short everytime which explains the abysmal 3rd down conversions. Seriously are our WR's :scared: of the First down Marker? They have to learn to run the route to the appropriate dept, thats a sign of good route runners.

There were a couple plays where this happened and things looked bad, like that drive-killing incompletion to KT's feet short of the sticks, where he had 3 guys around him, all waiting for him just short of the sticks. The Jets ran the right defense on that one. Tom needed to look elsewhere, or maybe there is an adjustment that should have been made by KT.

The clock stops either way on a turnover, but he needs to reflect on how close he got to being injured and either run straight out-of-bounds next time or lay down and enjoy the moment from the comfort of the fetal position.

The ball was overthrown, not all Dobson's fault.

That throw was about as good as it gets. If Dobson wants to be the Pats' deep threat, he needs to catch that more often than not. Not a bad drop, but he needs to figure out a way to make the plays when they are there, because he might not get another chance.

The most disappointing part of the game for me was the O-Line's inability to run block. They performed really well last week vs Buffalo but the Jets line dominated them. Wilkerson and Richardson were dominant.

The most frustrating part of the game was the drops. You can see the potential but they really need to get there before the meat of the schedule. The ten days off should help.

Good thing this season started Bills, Jets and Bucs and not Broncos, Falcons and Saints. The offense better figure it out before those games and getting Gronk back should help. Amendola being out 2-6 weeks just sucks. Imagine if Edelman had signed elsewhere.

On defense the Pats weren't awful vs the run but they weren't great either. If the Jets had stayed with the run they would have given themselves a better chance to win. I also don't know why they didn't go back to splitting the running back out wide. Smith made an awful throw of that's a big gainer.

I second the bad hold on the FG. I only saw it once but if you go back and review I think that will be the case.

Edelman also got behind them early and he missed the throw (or Brady missed him - not sure who was at fault). Thompson also had separation a few times. Hopefully the timing/accuracy will come.

I liked most of the commentary last night - right up until the fighting broke out. When Mayock said Talib shouldn't have been "dancing down the sidelines" prior to the Mangold hit, I wanted to reach through the TV, grab his mic and step on it.

God forbid Talib plays the game of football completely within the rules of the game. Clearly anyone that does this should have their knees removed. :bricks:

This...... Brady really needs to get his emotions in check. The baby pouting last night was Manning-eske. Rooks are rooks, and ours made plenty of dumb plays, but not all of the drops were just on them. As Brady got more and more frustrated, he started forcing stuff and his throws just didn't look right. TFB has gotten a little spoiled the last few years having such reliable receivers, but he's gonna have to "go 2006" for a few games, where he took an arguably worse WR corp to the AFC Champs. The goat is gonna have to remind us all why he is the goat, and that doesn't start with visible Manning temper-tantrums on the field.

Don't get me wrong.... Rooks need to better, but overall, they looked like the Rooks they are. As for the Run game, Jets were keyed on it (which is why our rooks looked like they were running free back there). No way they would have done that with Gronk, DA and even Vareen out of the backfield. Fat Boy's gameplan was to stop the run, let the rooks step up and makes plays (which they didn't). That's why they bit so hard on the play-action the first TD.

For all the droppseys, miscues and things that need work, the one thing we should all be able to agree on....... This team has grit.

In years past....... this team would have lost that game. They didn't..... They won..... and I will definitely take that as a positive.

The Jets appear to have a dominant run blocking team. They held Doug Martin on Sunday to 65 yards and a TD on 24 carries (2.7 YPC). Martin is a guy who had 1454 yards, 11 TDs, and 4.6 YPC last year.

I am not all that worried about the run blocking last night. Yes, it was mediocre at best, but the Jets have a monster defensive front who are going to be one of the best run defenses in the league (assuming the injuries they had last night to the d-line aren't major).
