Edelman Forecast - Week 2

I see the post police have decided that we cannot discuss this week's WR situation, except under the misleading title. I guess, that I will need to rephrase the title and re-post.

I understand why the "post police" get criticized, but given that your post appears to only discuss Edelman, it's perfectly understandable.

:) As you can see from the ensuing discussion, the real issue is the opportunity for others.

I expect Edelman to be double-teamed and for Tomkins and/or Dobson and/or Boyce to be Brady's targets. One or two of them might pleasantly surprise us. At least I hope so.

Thompkins was treated like a veteran WR last week, got rattled and lost his confidence. We asked too much of him. We'll likely dial that back some and move him off the sideline throws. He'll be fine but he won't see 14 targets.

You shouldn't assume that Dobson is going to play. It would be his first NFL game and he would be nervous, playing a quality CB and not 100%. It's not the way to start his career.

Edelman will play well in the slot. Washington will play WR from the backfield.

Punt the ball  and find a way to win. Force the defense to realize that their binky offense is no longer a given. This game will be fun to watch, finally, finally, I get to see the Defense on the hook from the get go.

We're going to win. :)

I'd expect Edelman to play most of his snaps in the slot and bracketing a slot receiver isn't a very common thing to do. I think the Jets D will be a pretty vanilla base and our guys will have to beat man coverage, plain and simple.

Why is it not a common thing to do? Considering our lack of reliable targets outside of the slot receiver, I would think that it could be a distinct possibility.

I'm not questioning your knowledge of specific defensive schemes. It's likely better than mine. I'm just wondering why it shouldn't be a possibility here, and what I am missing?

I agree that we should win, but I'm thinking that there have been some other examples of our defense being under pressure before right from the get go aside from the NYJ...

True but not by our intentional design.

Also, we have only a one game sample against a better offensive team than the Jets. Last weeks performance wasn't bad, we can/should build on it.

No, I'm not disappointed in last week's defensive performance in the least. I believe that they stopped 11/13 of the Bills' possessions, and held them to 30% on third down. They kept both Spiller and Jackson in check and limited the big plays.

The secondary is still a concern for me personally, but it's looked a lot worse in the past. My biggest concern is likely still the mismatches of the opposing RB's and TE's on our LB's. That was a big problem last year, and I'm hoping that they will make some progress in that area.
