Week 2: Patriots vs Jets

The line is now 13-points. That's very tempting since the Pats will struggle without Vereen and possibly Danny A. if his hammy can't go on short rest.

I expect another tough close win. Unless the D completely dominates a rookie QB in his first road game.

hey gang, Jets fan checking in

hope you don't mind a little perspective from the other side.

i am looking a lot more forward to the game than i was 2 days ago as i'm sure you can imagine ... but it still is going to be a BIG test for the young QB ... as well as a young team in general.

for the poster who talked about Leon Washington ... the Jets brought him in for a tryout ... but unless i recently missed something he was not signed.

let me start by touching on the matchup that i would imagine we may potentially be strongest on

Pats O vs Jets D

the DL is what will give us a chance to be competitive as that truly is our greatest strength ... there was a bunch of swapping Ellis & Harrison in & out to keep those big bodies fresh as 3-4 NT's ... so running the hurry up & limiting our ability to manuever then around would be a sound strategy. I have to warn you that the rookie Richardson was very impressive & Wilkerson is our best player now that Revis is in Tampa.

The other 1st round rookie, cb Miliner struggled in his 1st start ... and Cro didn't play as well as we expected ... moreso with giving up too much cushion and allowing easy short completions than getting torched deep ... but not up to what we had hoped for ... so if Amendola can go & is close to 100% he, along with Brady's talent to get the ball to the open spots will be what we struggle against.

I was pleasantly surprised with Antwan Barnes coming in as a situational passrusher at OLB ... he closed the QB a lot quicker than i had expected to see.

S was a big question for us going into camp this year & both Allen & Landry had up and down performances.

the fact that you guys have so many new faces in at the offensive skill positions, & that this game is so early in the year, as well as off a short week i will hope is good timing for us and Brady is not able to work as much magic as he will be able to do later in the season with them.

Anyway, ... that's a little inside info, off the top of my head, for you all from the other side ... i better get back working ... if i get a chance over the next couple days i'll try to post a Jets fan view on the Jets O vs Pats D matchup.

Hope the game is injury free

I posted somewhere else about how the key to beating the Jets is to take advantage of their slow as molasses linebackers.

How do you take advantage of them?

TEs and pass catching RBs.

Who are we missing for this game?

All of our TEs and pass catching RBs.

I'm thinking of betting the line (I think Patriots are favored by 11 points???) because I feel like this is going to be a close grind it out game. The Jets offense is so bad I think Geno will spot us 7 points off a dumb turnover but with our weapons available, unless Dobson comes and has a monster game, really don't feel comfortable about this game.

For the second consecutive week, the defense will have to win it for us.

For everyone saying the spread is a joke, when is the last time TB had two miserable games in a row? Sure, the Patriots won't be hanging 50 on anyone in the near future, but I think you underestimate this offense.

Kenbrell Thompkins will undoubtedly improve, as he can't get much worse.

Aaron Dobson might play. Josh Boyce will have an increased role. I'm sure between the two of them, we'll see some rookie mistakes but it's not like the Patriots will be lining up 8 players.

At tight end, much like Thompkins, it can't get any worse than game 1 from a pass catching perspective. Sudfield's zero catches and one interception is as low as it gets.

The loss of Vereen is huge, I'll admit that. However, they'll need Ridley and the other backs to carry the load. There will be a dropoff, but probably not to the degree that we fear.

If Amendola plays, the Pats will get over 21 points, and that will be enough to beat the Jets. If they rattle Geno Smith, the game could get ugly.

The Jets LBs aren't slow anymore. Bart Scott is gone and DeMarrio Davis replaced him. Davis is very athletic. Also gone is Bryan Thomas and replaced by Antwan Barnes and Ricky Sapp.

My biggest concern about the Jets is their DL. Sheldon Richardson (my binkie this year but he went way too high =[) looked really good yesterday. Mo Wilkerson is obviously good, possibly a top 5 DL. Kenrick Ellis is just big. This is going to be another good test for our OL. Getting our run game going is going to be a tough task.

The company line from Jets fans is that their defense the last 4 years was Rex's and that Pettine was just a guy following orders (and giving occasional leaks to the press)

But that defense played us remarkably hard today and reminded me quite a bit of the Jets D the last few years.

I'm very interested to see how things unfold and if the Jets defense plays us as hard as usual or if Pettine had a greater hand into their D than we thought.
I dont think that D played us well at all. We shot ourselves in the foot. If Ridley doesnt fumble and we score from the 1, we put 37 points up. Were werent stopped, we made mistakes.

He's on our team here. He was resigned last week.

Enjoy the game, and thanks for the reasonable commentary. Maybe ALL NYJ fans aren't all that bad?

Nah. I hate you just the same ;)

:D

Yep - and Ellis isn't the starter. Damon Harrison is, and he looked like a monster against Tampa. A terrific find as a UDFA last year (he dominated small-school competition and is showing that he is legitimate against the big boys). Our interior pass rush matches up very well against your OL (your strength is at OT), and if we shut down Doug Martin, I expect more of the same against Ridley, especially without Gronk and Hernandez to worry about.

I doubt the Jets win this game - not enough horses on offense - but it will be competitive.

Deus, I'd expect to see the Jets CBs playing sides of the field, rather than following WRs around, since the Pats don't have a dominant WR that Cro matches up well with (so there's no real reason to move him around). Bracket coverage on Amendola. Vereen being out is huge for the Jets.

Edelman's more waterbug than downfield receiver. If they put Cromartie on him, I'll be quite content.

People need to move past the supposed aura of the Jets Defense. They're no longer the terrors of the past. They're a good unit and nothing more. They may very well return to being an elite D in the future, but right now, Brady has their measure.

If the Patriots don't continue this run of full ****** turnover form, I don't see it being close. If the Patriots continue to shoot themselves in the foot with silly turnovers and afford Smith the vaunted Sanchez check down, then the game will be closer than we give it credit for.

I only said that their D "can be tough," so I don't think you're disagreeing with me.

As for the rest, yeah. That's why I said it won't necessarily be a "walk in the park."

I think we should see alot of improvement from thompkins, hopefully some Dobson also. Edleman and amendola were beasts yesterday with vereen. As much as we look bad on O, I think we will see much improvement because the rookies finally were in a meaningful game. They will now know what is expected.

.

WTF???

Brady had a miserable game against Buffalo?
Unless I'm missing the satire, TFB took a vicious beating the 1st half and then with the game on the line and only a couple reliable weapons, threaded the needle time and again for the 4th QTR comeback win.

Man i hope the Pats think this game is a gimme and sit a lot of players that could play if they had to. Division/Thursday games are never easy and I can easily see the Jets winning this game if Amendola, Gronk, Vereen, Dobson, Sudfeld are all out.

potent jets O will kill us....why even show up

) The Pats skill players were quite lackluster on Sunday, and the timing was off. Thompkins, Sudfeld, and Ridley weren't cutting it. They dropped 20+ on the Bills but the Jets D is just a tad better.

2) Amendola (their only real viable option) re-injured his groin and stated after the game, he wasn't sure he'd be able to return.

3) The Pats are going to rely heavily on the run to set up the pass. The Pats are not going to run on the Jets like they ran on the Bills.

All of this and they only have 3 DAYS to fix it. If they had a full week I'd say we'll see. But Brady's weapons are a mess right now, and this is a serious plus matchup (yeah I said it) for the Jets given the short turnaround.

Jets 2 - 0 come Friday morning.

We can run on the PATS. Keep Brady off the field and you won't have to worry about him. Run the ball down their throats and then let Geno light it up with an occasional pass here and there. He has also shown BB that they need to keep someone home to watch for Geno running the ball himself. If they don't , he'll get the 1st downs himself.

I expect Ivory and Powell to have a good day. Winslow and Hill are now Geno's go-to guys. DEF line has to get pressure on Brady and make him flustered. LBs need to flatten Brady early and often. We've seen it work.

who are the jets going to run on us with? Powell? ivory? ok....

I was shocked that the "players of the game" did not include Brady, whose gutsy performance and superb patience allowed him to continue to go out there and do his thing.

We kept hearing about Vereen, Amendola, Edelman and Arrington--and I'd obviously agree with those choices, but I would definitely have included Tom Brady in there as well.

The man is a legend.

I want to see Dobson play some. I think he could be very good even though raw.

has missed a lot of time with brady which isn't good in your first year...still limited today

I know but I think these rookies learned alot Sunday. As much as pre season helps, it never translates to pats regular season tempo. I think thompkins will greatly improve and Dobson could help.
