Practice Squad Taking Shape

I don't think that Sims being on the Practice Squad is relevant to us bringing in one of the best kick returners in the NCAA.
If you believe in the spread the depth concept, I don't understand why the New England Patriots need two offensive tackles and two linebackers on the practice squad. With regard to the linebackers, the New England Patriots already have seven linebackers on the 53 man roster and two on speed dial (Koutouvides, Rivera).

I'd prefer a better distribution on the practice squad:

RB
WR
OC/OG
OT
DE
DT
LB
DB (CB or SS)

I actually have to admit to you that I looked at the combine and college stats for 4 out of 5 of the players they worked out, and the 1 player I didn’t look into was Dunn, my thought process was – we won’t sign another wide receiver after Sims. With my admission out of the way, I want say I am really glad you pointed him out, his pro day numbers are ridiculous, I always like to compare a player to another prospect, probably a moronic thing to like to do but check this kid out compared to Tavon Austin.

Austin
Height: 5084
Weight: 174
40 Yrd Dash: 4.28
20 Yrd Dash: 2.49
10 Yrd Dash: 1.50
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 14
Vertical Jump: 32
Broad Jump: 10'00"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.01
3-Cone Drill: N/A

Dunn
Height: 5093
Weight: 178
40 Yrd Dash: 4.22
20 Yrd Dash: 2.49
10 Yrd Dash: 1.52
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 17
Vertical Jump: 36
Broad Jump: 10'01"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.34
3-Cone Drill: 6.82

Pretty impressive that Dunn is bigger, faster and has better leaping ability than the Austin who was selected 8th overall in the draft. I also would give Dunn the toughness edge since he hails from the Compton, CA. I say sign him up!!

Good call Scott99 :youtheman:
Brady6, thanks for the shout out, as well as bringing more numbers to the table. I really hope they sign Dunn, but I think it would have happened already, so I think it was just a look see.

There is another philosophy that says there probably only a limited number of guys floating around out there that have potential to be NFL players. Teams will seek them out irrespective of position. Think I read Parcells mention something about coaches looking for 'players', not filling in depth charts. (I don't think this is completely true as it ignores the development angle)

Not saying this is the better way to look at it, just another perspective.

Re: Re: Practice Squad Taking Shape

I didn't call you out. I simply stated an opinion. Some may agree; some may disagree/

I apologize for any offense.

Besides, I rarely comment in a way that is "calling someone out". I have no reason to be personal. I agree or disagree with positions taken. Occasionally, I will suggest that a position is inconsistent with a position I understood the poster to have, but that is always out of respect, not out of any attempt to make a personal attack.

No big deal my friend as I said I have nothing but the highest regard for you, I may of been being overly sensitive.

I do appreciate you taking the time to clarify things, it sincerely means a lot:)

Well deserve buddy, after doing some research I'd really like to see him onboard as well, you cannot teach his kind of athleticism.

Re: Re: Practice Squad Taking Shape

Kline to PS.

We have a lot of OL on board right now. If I had to guess the herd will be trimmed over the next few days.

I am happy to see that Sims has made the practice Squad. The rest of the practice squad is also looking good.

4.22 on the 40 is ridiculous for Dunn. That's the current record for an NFL combine.

A few posters, myself included, are disappointed that running back George Winn is not on the practice squad.

Couldn't agree more. Simms was particularly good in that last pre season game. I am hopeful about his future on this team.

Not exactly:

2013 NFL Combine: 40 record safe as McCalebb's time bumped down - CBSSports.com

INDIANAPOLIS -- Trindon Holliday can breathe a sigh of relief. His 4.21-second 40-yard dash in 2010 remains the fastest time at the scouting combine since 2000 -- but the mark had to survive an assault from a deep class of speed burners inside Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday.

I have no problem with this theory. IMHO, we do tend to keep a total of 11 OL's, so if we keep 9 on the 53, then we would keep 2 on the PS as you suggested, if we keep 8, then I prefer three. The OL backups are more than backups; they are linemen in training.

I also think that roster depth on the 53 affects the need for Practice Squad players. Almost everyone wanted Sims, even though we are carrying one more WR on the 53 than last year (2 more than most of the year).

I think that we all agree that LB Davis is excess.

Sure, I'd love to see a DE. It seems that we need another on the 53 first. We already have 2 on the 53 that many thought would be on the Practice Squad as of a month ago.

I'd prefer a better distribution on the practice squad:

RB
WR
OC/OG
OT
DE

LB

Not thaI it means much in the great scheme of things, but I find the make up of this PS more than a bit odd given the following:

1. Why is there no CB, given we are a little thin there

2. Why are there 3 OLmen on the PS, given we have 9 on the Roster and stashed 2 more on the IR. The team is rife with developmental OLmen

3. Where is the developmental QB? A team needs to have at least 3 QBs to practice with. Who is going to run the scout team....Josh?

4. Where is the extra RB. Why isn't Winn or Devlin on the PS? This might not be a big deal for games, but think about the wear and tear when there are only 4 RBs to work in practice.

No folks, I don't think this PS is set in stone by any means, nor is the roster in general. Lots going to happen after Sunday in my humble opinion

Looks like OL Josh Kline was signed to the Practice Squad. No corresponding drop yet!

I am all for signing this kid Dunn! Sign him to the 53 and move Beauharnais.

Nah. We need the depth/STs play at LB more than we need a WR prospect on the 53.

Dunn would rarely see the field as a WR, his main function would be as a return man. I wish we signed the guy, Edelman is great at punt returns, but we have no explosiveness on the kick return side, that's why Leon Washington was signed. Boyce looks like he can help in that department, but he didn't have that much experience in college doing it. Dunn is one of the greatest kick returners in the history of college football, but obviously they saw something they didn't like, otherwise he'd be signed already.

I think it's more likely Washington is re-signed after week 1.
