mesko released

Kind of a shocker. Guys got to be a top 10 If not top 5 punter in this league. Also had one of the coolest names.

Hope this new guy is worth it.

He's going to get a job somewhere else.

Seemed like a great guy in the community. Will be missed.

Color me shocked by this one.

Losing Mesko did sting a bit, he was a true gent and a great character.

Live long and prosper Zoltan.

First and foremost, I want to thank the New England Patriots for everything they have done for me. I have nothing but love in my heart as I depart this great organization. Mr. Kraft, the coaches, the strength staff, the trainers, the media personnel, the marketing department, the rest of the amazing staff members at Gillette, and especially my teammates…THANK YOU for all that you have given and have done for me. I want to say that I see the silver lining in things now more than ever, and am a true believer that things DO happen for a reason. This goes out to anyone that will ever come across a mere bump in the road; be thankful, be positive, because there’s a deeper purpose of WHY things happen that we may not yet, or may never come to understand. Just believe. I will miss New England, and more than anything, I’ll be missing the smiles on those kids whom I visited and acted like a goofball in front of. It was ALL worth it. God bless.

First thing I noticed is that he didn't mention Bill by name.

Yep; so when Ghost misses another 40-yarder, he'll have a ready-made excuse for us.

Who was holding for him during the preseason? I should have paid attention.

This is another example of the economics of this team, Mesko was going into his contract year.. they found a competent or what seems to be an equal replacement, so make the move now and spread the money elsewhere..

Don't fall in love with the veterans..

McCourty, Ninkovich and Spikes are all in their contract year...

Also interesting that as a group we spend time on a punter.. nice luxury, imagine being a jets fan right now???

But McCourty isn't in his contract year, he's signed thru 2014.

No, you can't teach it, but you can build it.
He's had 3 years to build his leg strength, and his accuracy.

I'm no member of The Zoltan's fan club, but I ass-umed that both he & Cunnyham would be kept for the last year of their rookie contracts, so that when they signed somewhere else as UFAs,
we would take a step closer to receiving a compensatory draft pick.

I have to laugh. The Pats preseason telecasts had -- what was it? -- 47 guys doing color commentary on the bubble players. I confess that I bailed on most of those games in the second half, but I don't recall a lot of Mesko speculation. So much for pundits....:rocker:

AFAIK, Mesko held on all FG & PA attempts...I think.
Also, Allen admitted that he was never the holder in college.

It really sucks that the Pats dumped Mesko. I'm not sold on Allen because he tends to outkick his coverage, which will lead to big gains for the opposing team.

Hope this doesn't lead to another merry-go-round of punters coming in and out of Gillette like we had before Mesko was drafted.

I'm sold. He won the job. Nothing against Mesko, but we've upgraded this position. Kid has a powerful, consistent foot and that's something that hurt Mesko was his lack of consistency. Allen will make you a believer. Solid move by BB.

I hope you're right, Riddler. My concern would be Allen's performance after Thanksgiving,
when the conditions will be less favorable than they were at Louisiana Tech.

I agree. I hate this move. Mesko's punts were returned an average of 6 yards last year. 3rd best in the NFL.

In the last 2 preseason games, the opponents had 8 total return yards on his 5 punts. Furthermore, in each the last 3 preseason games he managed to pin the opponent inside the 10 and averaged about 5 seconds hang time on his punts.

So yeah....I'm going to guess that you didn't actually pay attention to Allen's performance.

This. Either I haven't been paying much attention to Mesko, or Allen can actually kick coffin corners. Against the Giants he hit the sidelines at the 7 and 10, and his third was a fair catch close to the sideline around the 14.

Mesko, statistically, was mediocre to bad last season in yards per punt and net yards (28th and 24th, respectively). The thing he was great at was limiting return yards (154 on 60 total punts; 2nd in the league). Like you said (8 yards on 5 punts), Allen looks like he can match that. I think it's a good move, as long as we have a good holder... which is what I'm worried most about.

I just rewatched the Giants game and Mesko was the only holder.

Actually, this is WAY more newsworthy than ::ahem:: that other cut I won't talk about (Okay okay, I mean Ras-I Dowling... NOT)...

I guess the math is the math... 2nd best in the NFL on one stat, against a guy with potential -- in the Pats' minds -- of being first best on that stat and maybe a couple of extra ways? I guess that means the 2nd best in the NFL on that stat goes to another club. Something tells me we'll see Mesko picked up in pretty short order.

This is a definite "wow" moment, even if he is a punter.
