Keeping Patriots QB Tim Tebow - Pros and Cons
By: Ian Logue

Having Tim Tebow in Foxboro has been quite an experience, but as roster cutdowns begin to creep up it's hard to say what his future holds in New England....

issues with this article

1.)trouble in the open field. In order to get into the open field you need him to be a.) on the field(who do you sit?) b.)the target of the ball(over dobson, thompkins, gronk, amendola) c.)have him actually catch the ball. Thats a whole lot of factors involved to just get him a potential target. I'd hardly call this a PRO. more like an honorable mention

2.)Tebows big arm beat the steelers in the playoffs.

3.)hes got good instincts? Not as a QB. If Tebow is a fullback type runner, hes not shifty, at least no more so then blount.

Cons: Can't carry an extra DT, CB or S on the roster and essentially the Pats would be down to a 51 man roster for the first few weeks if they put Gronk on the 53 and keep Tebow.

That's all I need to know to want him gone.

If this guy's name were Joe Smith and he'd been acquired as a free agent, would he make the 53? Not a chance in Hell.

Maybe this can be the new Tebow thread. The other one completely fell apart, and of course a religious discussion taking place pretty much had everything to do with it. As I said in the other thread, if he's here to give the defense looks vs. the read option in practice, I can see a roster spot for him as the team cuts ties with the Nate Ebners of the world (not saying it's him vs. Ebner, just using Ebner as an example). If they're seriously looking at him as a back-up for Brady, I think he's done... and he would deserve to be cut. Mallett hasn't set the world on fire this preseason by any stretch of the imagination, but he's certainly out-played Tebow.

Tebow doesn't make the team...he's an awful QB. Also i don't think well have any hassle picking him up as FA during the season if we are stuck so no reason to keep him on the opening day roster. The only reason to have him on the roster is because of his leadership skills.

I believe the decision to keep Tim on the 53 was made before he was signed by the Patriots.

The rationale for keepinh Tebow is simple, this is Mallett's last season as a backup, if he is traded Tebow can become the (career?) backup.

The issue is does the coaching staff believe they can develop him into a viable backup, correcting some of his flaws as a thrower and leveraging his 'leadership' skills and 'clutch playmaking' (and not turning the ball over for much of the season) skills he showed in Denver when he led them to the playoff win over the Steelers.

Idon't know the answer to this question of course.

I believe he makes the team. During the Training Camp, Tebow was seen doing some specific plays and I believe he'll be here to run those, based upon Coach's planning for specific scenarios.

You need to remember what Belichick said when Tebow came in... (paraphrase) that Tebow was a strong athletic football player, that the hardest part for game planning against him was how to tackle him. He's so strong that one man normally can't do it and you need two and sometimes three to get him on the ground.

Maybe his mechanics aren't what folks like, but I believe that the team believe that they can fix that. Unlike the Michael Bishop era, Tebow has some good NFL experience and does seem coachable.

I expect to see him on the team. Certainly, if for no other reason, than it makes opposing defensive coaches have to plan for the possibility of Tebow being on the field.

A player needs to be active to run plays.

In any case, Belichick either wants a 3rd QB or not. The idea has nothing to do with this year, and everything to do with next or even 2015. Few expect Mallett to be here in 2015. Tebow would not have been my choice.

You're kidding right...like reason has something to do with what you and others think about Tim? Hell, many of you guys don't think there is a good reason for Tim to be here in the first place.

Using reason in a discussion with some of you guys reminds me of the song that is linked by this sentence.

Perhaps you could be so kind to bring up some of my posts for me, especially ones where I'm stating that I don't think there's a good reason for Tim to be here in the first place?

You're correct. As a matter of fact, many of your post are fair critics.

It is true that I probably should have been more generic when I said, "you and others think about Tim", by saying 'what some people think about Tim', but I was excited to have such a good segue (reason) into being able to say that reasoning with some of the folks here is like pissing in the wind.

Sorry if I did you an injustice.

Absolutely, the biggest mistake Chad Johnson ever made was changing his name to Ochocinco, had he changed it to Tim Tebow he would still be a Patriot, playing like the worst receiver in football wouldn't have made any difference.

That was an error - I've corrected it and appreciate the mention. As Christopher Price of WEEI would say, I'm off to run a penalty lap
