Will the Patriots trade Ryan Mallet ?

I'm a little confused about the premise here. Why would watching starting QBs drop like flies make us value our backup less? Rather than reminding us that backup QBs actually matter?

Imagine this scenario: Joe Flacco goes down for the Ravens, and the only other QB on the Baltimore roster is...Tim Tebow. Wouldn't we all be laughing our asses off?

It's too late for a team to trade for him and then teach him their offense and get him comfortable with his new receivers. Mallet watch is on hold until next March.

More importantly, those who believe there is a market for Mallett probably need to grasp the reality that a 3rd round pick would not be a third round pick unless all other teams felt he had issues and didn't want him as a QB.

To play Devil's advocate for a second, why was Marques Colston a 7th-round pick? He didn't have a nagging history of injuries, he didn't go to a school with no history of producing WR talent (Wayne Chrebet went to Hofstra), etc.

Also, remember that such a statement requires that there be 32 "rational actors" participating in the draft. We all know that there's at least one "franchise" that isn't rational, and a half-dozen more that are wildly dysfunctional.

One presumption would almost have to be that Josh and Bill would feel comfortable having Tebow run whatever offense they tailor for him.

IF that is the case, if other starters get hurt, it distorts the market with regards to the value of backup QBs. Basically, Mallett right now isn't worth a 1st round pick. However, IF there's a QB shortage due to injuries, Mallett's value could increase, perhaps even dramatically. In such a situation, the Pats should sell high.

That said, IF Bill and Josh aren't comfortable with Tebow (even presuming that he makes the roster), and if they don't see anyone out there who could take Mallett's place, then it's very possible that they would turn down a #1 pick just to keep Mallett as insurance.

At this point I don't think Mallett has shown enough to bring in anything on the trade market and I don't think he will. My prediction is he walks in FA for a team where he can compete for a starting job.

Or is he an RFA or something this year? I can't be bothered to google.

Mallett is under contract through the 2014 season.

I think what we should really be discussing is how many games can matt lienhart go this season before break a collarbone.

I putting the over under at 6 quarters of gametime.

Why would the Patriots trade Mallett? He's the only non-Tebow quarterback on the roster. And similarly, why would a team trade for Mallett? He's looked, at best, sub-par this preseason and that's been against backups. If there was a market for QBs at all, it would probably be for players like Nick Foles or Matt Flynn.

Cool, so hopefully we get one more shot with this guy. Maybe they'll play him for all 4 on Thursday.

Leinart would have gotten rid of that ball before he saw a 300 pounder bearing down on him like a bat out of hell. You need two arms to be able to operate a hot tub full of hot sorority girls.

Re: Will Ryan Mallet get traded ?

Exactly. That's my thought on the matter. If a desperate team offers a first round pick for mallet do you say no. I wouldn't.

I'm sorry, but that isn't thinking. That is fantasizing. No team is going to trade a 1st rounder for Mallett for a variety of reasons. First and foremost is that they would be in a better position to take a highly touted QB coming out. Secondly, the quarterbacks coming out in the last few years have been highly successful outside of Tebow. Luck, Wilson, RGIII, Newton. Third, none of the teams who are having QB issues are remotely close to play-off contenders. So even adding a Mallett won't get them into the hunt. So, they'd be trading a HIGH 1st round pick..

I think so. I just have that feeling. Some teams qb's are going down like flies and acquiring a player like mallet will help solve their problem. Teams like the bills even with EJ Manuel in the fold and the jets.

QB questionable teams:

Bills – Manual
Jets – G. Smith
Browns – Weeden
Jaguars – Gabbert
Vikings – Ponder
Titans - Locker
Raiders – Pryor/Flynn

Of the teams in need of a quarterback I really don’t see us being interested in trading Mallett to them (Jets, Bills in division) or the other team being that interested in Mallett. You’d also have to ask even if all of those teams were potential trade partners is Mallett better than the relatively young QB’s they currently have on their rosters.

I do not see a trade imminent for Mallett, his preseason performance has been average at best and certainly not anything eye opening. I currently only view Cousins in Washington as a backup that teams would overpay for in a trade.

I'd rather we acquired another quarterback. SF is sure to release 2 or 3 of its 5. We should take a look. I am not all that confident in Mallet, but we can't let him go until we have someone better.

I highly doubt that anyone is going to give you a pick higher than the third round pick that the Pats used on Mallet. Especially when you consider that the regualr season starts in less than two weeks! The Pats are better off keeping Mallet. The only way he ups his vaule is unfortunatley, what no Pats fan wants to see, him getting significant playing time becuase Brady is out.

I just don't see it happening. He is too vaulable to the Pats were he is.

BTW, cut Tebow.

I could see the Pats picking up Ricky Stanzi for the practice squad over the weekend.

Re: Will Ryan Mallet get traded ?

I don't think he will, because Tebow has done nothing to show he's a competent backup, but the question does bring up an interesting thought experiment:

Let's say Mallett tears it up in the 4th preseason game. If one of these teams with QB injury problems offered up a 1st rounder for him (again, this is hypothetical, I don't expect this), do the Patriots take it and take their chances on a street FA for the year? Would you, as a fan, be ok with this move?

Things more likely to happen than us receiving a 1st for Mallett:

• Tebow parts the Red Sea
• Tebow reveals he is in fact God.
• Tebow retires from football to tour with Eminem.
• Aaron Hernandez escapes from jail.
• Aaron Hernandez kills a corrections officer.
• Aaron Hernandez is found not guilty.
• Tom Brady leaves Giselle for Tebow.
• Tom Brady becomes the next Tiger Woods (sexual addict).
• Belichick has Hernandez green lit.
• Belichick has Welker green lit.
• Belichick retires from football to go into public speaking.
• Belichick publically tells Tebow to go get laid.
• Kraft dumps his 25 year old GF for a woman his own age.
• Kraft testifies as a character witness on Hernandez behalf during his trial.
• Kraft sells the team and buys out Hugh Hefner.

Endless possibilities, but if a team offered I think they would carry Mallett to them to ensure safe delivery.

Ivan and Belichick90210 acknowledge that Tebow should be on the roster.

I think you are looking at the issue from the wrong perspective.

Basically, a "perfect storm" would need to happen. It would have to be a good team seriously in the playoff hunt, and they would need to have a very good defense. Addtionally, they'd have to get turned down when going after other perspective backups like Orton.

In short, the team would need to be in extremely desperate need and also have a fanatical desire to make the playoffs (perhaps to try save the job of the coach or GM.)

Re: Will Ryan Mallet get traded ?

For a first rounder I'd pack his bags and drive him to the airport myself. ****, I'd fly with him as his personal peanut procurer.

And then what would you do? Spend two first rounders to move up to pick from the barren 2104 QB class? That is not very bright.

For this season what would you do as well? Spend a 3 on a backup QB with no hope of excelling?

Sometimes you have to think of the consequences.
