Jason Wolfe out at WEEI

I'm sure there are more than a few know it alls that call into sports radio but I hear far more fans calling in with passionate viewpoints, there is a difference. I've questioned BB's calls before or something [fill in name of Patriot Player here] did but that doesn't mean I think I'm smarter than them by default.

Of course there will be talk focused on particular botched plays or calls but remember that they have to fill show content for 4 hours 5 days a week. Are they supposed to be like Chris Farley in that famous SNL skit with Paul McCartney?

"Hey callers, remember...remember...remember when Brady threw that TD pass to Gronk and he did that cool spike? Yeah, ummm, that was, that was awesome".

Interesting thread. Thanks for again reminding me why I stopped listening to both outlets.

Wow....... sad. A simple "homer" is now an attack to you. Perhaps you could have read Icypatriots' post and the slant he put on those who are more inclined to question the BB moves.

Nobody does it more than Felger and Mazzhole ... but Mazz is at least consistent in that he attacks coaches and management across the board ... Mazz is the ultimate choade. One thing I do like Felger for is that he has great hockey knowledge and does an extremely good job talking hockey ... also basketball. He has a hard time hiding his distaste of the Patriots and Red Sox ... but ... whatever ... I only listen to him if I am at my desk in the afternoon sometimes as I watch it on TV.

I will defend Wolfe on one thing. If he didn't move Michael Holley to afternoon drive and pay him accordingly. The 2-6 shift on 98.5 would be right now Holley and Felger or Holley, Felger, and Mazz. Michael Holley was the only popular host WEEI had under the age of 45.

Much as i hate Felger's contrarian act I would listen to him iof he were paired with Holley as Holley is smart enough to rebut him, but felger with Curran would be a blast to listen to because there is no way Curran would put up with Felger's schtick and would make him look foolish most of the time by simply reminding him of every other argument he has made in the past that would rebut whatever point of attack he would be taking at that moment. Masserotti is just a waste of air space.

Funny how so many only claim to listen to 98.5 by accident or in passing. Those high ratings evidently are an accident.

It's ok to listen...it's not like keeping a porn surfing secret from the wife*.

*Wife Disclaimer: Hi my little pirahna fish, if you read the aforementioned please be assured that I don't peruse "those" sites, in fact I have never heard of xhamster.

I think you may have the wrong quote for your post, here.... my post was just about noting that the audiences (specifically the Patsfans posters) don't seem to break down in the manner you claim.

Much as I really dislike talk radio in any form I love football and the Patriots so much that I will listen anytime i think there will be a good deal of football talk. I love hockey and the Bruins as well but I really don't think any of these guys do a good job talking it, however since i don't listen to Felger it may be that he's actually good at it but i am just unaware of it.

I would really like to listen to Jenny Dell in the morning. ;):p:p

always and ever, there are sluts a lurkin' out there....take an ice bath, Farmer In The Dell wannabe.....

One of the reasons I liked the Dale and Holley show so much was the interviews ... both hosts are great at interviews. In this ere a Twitter and all the rest to me it's about the only reason to listen ... the more interviews they can get the better I like it. The hosts may have access to some out of the media info but their sports knowledge is on par with some in forums like this ... they don't understand the sport more and often they understand it less.

When they are ranting along with the callers I switch to 1030 WBZ with Traffic on the 3's. I loathe complainers ... like really ... to complain about 1 play means you would have called all the others exactly as Belichick called them ... which is nowhere near possible. He's not perfect but he's closer to it than most who have ever tried.

I've been a Caucasian my whole life (I think)...always thought Dale Arnold made me look like pumpernickle bread compared to the whiteness of his Wonder bread (I know, obscure metaphor, right?). Then , THIS box of Morton's salt, Mike Salk makes Dale look like Apollo Creed. Using another bread analogy, Salk is a slice of Bunny bread WITHOUT the crust. I don't think I could seriously withstand the urge to throttle him if I sat across a table from him.

I basically agree, i have no use for the angry or miserable caller routine and for the most part don't listen to the callers very much when i do listen. i would much rather have them talk to Mayo, Sean Thornton etc.......but ultimately they have to fill all that time and do so by allowing idiots like Steve From Fall River etc... to call up and do their schtick.

I tuned in when Salk made his debut. I figured he had to be good if they canned the former EEI superstar for him. I figured wrong.

The man is a whiney bore.

Ordway and the Big Show was the best. A great show that was destroyed by greed & Wolfe--they will never have a show as good on WEEI. They panic'd and destroyed their best show by far. Good riddance you jerks. Ordway should sue for age discrimination.

I agree with most of what you said except basketball. He does not hide his hate for the NBA.

I used to be in the sports radio biz (on-air) many years ago. Well, it was a sports show on a regular station...they didn't have all-sports radio at the time. Anyway, the question is this: What do sports fans want? In my mind, it's this:

(1) Quality and accurate information about sports, but particularly their favorite teams. We want to know what's going on at Pats' camp and with the Red Sox, etc. Keep us informed in a timely and accurate manner.

(2) A forum to discuss sports (and, again, our favorite teams in particular) without being made to feel like idiots by the hosts. We love talking about sports - debating the merits of various players, rehashing the games, discussing possible trades, etc. - in a friendly and engaging way.

(3) Entertainment. We want to *enjoy* listening. It can't be boring. It needs to be fun. Making funny spoofs, providing quality interviews, laughing a lot, having a good time...all that makes for good entertainment.

So all a station needs to do is meet those three needs and have a powerhouse signal and it should do just fine. Of course, the format matters and the on-air talent matters as well - getting the right people to deliver these goods is, apparently, a huge challenge.

I can't believe how bad sports radio has become. I don't know why there was so much hatred for Ordway. He was intelligent, self-effacing, a good interviewer and I think he was a good facilitator of conversation. Who cares if he talked over callers. About 80 percent of the callers have nothing intelligent to say and just want to hear themselves over the radio. I think all of the sports radio shows should do a much better job screening out callers and only take the intelligent callers that have something to add to the conversation.

I don't care at all for the weekday shows on the Sports Hub. I'd rather listen to D&C than T&R. Gresch always has and always will suck, and Felger and Mazz together are awful. Mazz is pathetic. He's Felger's little lap dog and doesn't know shyte about football or hockey.

I don't mind merloni, but I can't stand mut. I just hate his delivery. He annoys the crap out of me. The Dale and Holley show was fantastic mid day. Mut and Lou are terrible by comparison.

I thought Holley and Ordway was lame compared to the old Big Show format, where they had rotating guest hosts. Why did they change that formula? Cost too much?

Now that it is Holley and Salk, the instant that I hear Salk's voice I need to change the channel. I thought Mut was the most annoying host I had heard until I heard Salk. I absolutely can't stand him.

So as a person who spends a lot of time driving during the day and who used to listen to all 3 WEEI week day shows on a regular basis for years, I've gone to listening to almost no talk radio. I just endlessly flip around the dial. I might listen to Holley for a few seconds until Salk speaks and then I'm out.

Except for Ordway's bombastic routine the Big Show was fun everyday. Initially they stopped having all the guests for it because they did not want to pay them ... how did that work out for you Entercom. What did they expect when they slashed the budget ... they got what they deserved.

IMO what has happened is that entertainment has trumped everything, for example; Gresch and Zo.. I think the latter has a lot to offer, but he is usually trumped by the loud mouth bombast who talks over everyone.

Salk and his know it all whine trumps Holley, Mutt and Mernansky are wanna be's particularly when they try to talk football, Felger and Mazz cannot tolerate, D&C are just more bombasts with a political flavor.. I like Toucher and Rich as they know they are entertaining, with some sports mixed in.

Gresch is not the smartest guy in the room, but for some reason a lot of folks think he is..

I want to listen, but often I cannot as there is just too much "noise".. for some reason they believe that the person who talks the loudest is the most credible..

What I want are efforts at making intelligent conversation, that is about the game not about the announcers and their personal lives/conquests...

WFAN in the early morning since the Jets training camp began is great. The hosts over there try to steer the talk to the Yankees or the Mets or the NY Giants or whatever, and all they get are guys going off on Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez. Twice yesterday, the host told the callers not to call in and tell the screener they were calling about the Yankees and then go off on the Jets. It's like they're writing my "Jets Suck" thread post every morning.

Jason Wolfe at 'EEI taking it in the neck seems like the wrong guy got axed. This guy Brown seems like a disconnected owner's stooge. Calling listeners "uniques" is just downright insulting.

Meanwhile they are saying that a guy named Kevin Graham from Salt Lake City is going to replace Jason Wolfe. WEEI ? Boston Sports Media Watch

Great move. Salt Lake doesn't have an NFL, NHL nor an MLB team. What is he going to bring to the table?

Gerry Callahan will eat this new guy for lunch.
