Miserable Night For Tim Tebow Against Buccaneers

heh heh...your tweets are fantastic...crack me up

It's tough playing with 3rd string guys in the pre-season, but even so, Tebow should be able to read what is going on around him and make sound decisions. This is a QB who started for a playoff-caliber football team. His execution aside, it is disconcerting to see so much confusion when plays unfold and an inability to get plays off twice because he was too slow to get under center and get the ball snapped.

The kneel-downs at the end seemed like BB and Josh said, "we've seen enough."

Let's hope the Tebow experiment is over soon...like tomorrow. He's a waste of a roster spot.

Yeah...I don't normally go there - but last night just pushed me over the edge :)

I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but if he's doing that against third string guys there's not much else you can say. Plus I thought the whole reason they brought him here in the first place was to use him as an H-Back or something like that and not as a QB. But if he's still going to be a QB, I'd rather they go with two at this point and save the roster spot to make sure we've got depth at other spots, especially knowing what the injury history has been the last couple of years.

Tebow must be cut after preseason

Tebow is much worse than I ever though, and I am a Tebow fan. He does decent when he plays as an option QB. But that's his best. As a pocket passer, just horrible. In addition, Mallet really looked like a solid #2 QB last night.

I know all the intangibles and I like them: Leader, hard worker, good charachter guy (especially after the AH issue)...but, I want to keep many guys who may be on the bubble. I would be very upset if Tebow stayed and one of these bubble guys gets cut.

He doesn't have the talent to be on this team.

There were probably a hundred comments similar to this in the post game threads but I didn't read those. Just wanted to chime in that I was an optimist, I thought his running would offset his poor throwing, and his throwing would gradually improve but I had no idea he was THIS bad of a passer. I like the guy and don't think he should be be booed and disrespected etc...oh we'll he had a magical run with the broncos now its off to the CFL.

Agreed, enough is enough, time to move on.

My question is why did they bring him in at all if they intend to cut him? By playing to his tendencies, he is burning reps that could have been given to other players and better work other offensive components. Tebow may have hit on 65%+ of his college passes, but he is 50%- on pro passes. The Pats have been a team heavily reliant on short to intermediate routes that require laser precision. Inaccurate passing in those areas typically leads to interceptions. Unless Tebow fundamentally changed his play, which would seem highly unlikely if not impossible, he does not fit the Pats offense as a QB, so preseason simply proves what game film already shows - he can run, but he cannot throw an accurate pass. The Pats did not need to add him to the roster to prove that proposition.

Tebow is very athletic, and could probably be a viable player in a number of other positions. While his preseason work is sufficiently bad to merit something worse than simply being cut from the team, I believe he may stay with the Pats for some other purpose, whether fullback, tight end, or otherwise. No way do I see him joining the Pats as a charity project or to see if he can one day become a legitimate QB rather than a gimmick.

Re: Tebow must be cut after preseason

I've seen worse. That's about all I got.

As I said, I was O.K. with it as long as he was going to be something other than a QB. As I mentioned, that performance last night was against third string players and it's not like he had a bunch of scrubs lining up with him. I know about the run that was nullified by the penalty, etc. but he attempted seven passes and the only completion was a negative one to a guy more or less right near him. It's just not meant to be.

Move him to where you can use his athletic ability or let him go, because his arm (and his head) can't match what his legs can do.

Of course, if we brought up the comments from the 2008 pre-season games regarding Matt Cassel, they'd pretty much be the same as everyone is saying about Tim Tebow.

Cassel helped salvage that season. I'm still willing to give New England the benefit of the doubt that they know what they're looking for, and probably know what they're doing. :D

When Brady left the game, there was only a small drop in the level of Patriot offensive play. When Mallett left the game, there was like no more offense the rest of the way. Lot of defensive practice, tho. It was like two games--all offense in the first half, and all defense in the second.

I kept thinking that maybe Tebo was brought in to save Mallett from injuries in the same way that Mallett saves Brady.

This said, I like Tebo as a valuable athlete..love to see him take off with the ball--he's kind of like a replacement for Danny Woodhead. He picks up one or two yards on one play and 12 on the next. But as a Passer, he just seems to fire passes in the vicinity of a receiver--and leave it up to him to make some valiant effort to actually catch the ball or prevent an interception. He looked even worse than he did in his big losses to us in years past.

But even Cassel wasn't that bad, and he got better throwing the football as the preseason went on:

2008 PreSeason
Game 1 vs Ravens: 1-of-4 (25%) for 11yds 1 sack, 1 INT
Game 2 at Bucs: 6-of-10 (60%) for 57 yds
Game 3 vs Eagles: 8-of-14 (57%) for 60yds 3 sacks
Game 4 at Giants: 4-of-6 (67%) for 37yds

He wasn't great, but he wasn't terrible. After last night Tebow is just getting worse:

Game 1: 4-of-12 (40%) for 55yds 3 sacks
Game 2: 1-of-7 (14%) for -1 yds 1 INT

You'll obviously get your chance to see if he can turn it around, but there's no denying what happened last night. That was ugly.

Mallet is not looking like the future of the franchise right now -- not that I ever thought he would be given the timeline of his free agency and Brady's retirement being years away. But his performance has likely killed his trade value.

I was a fan of the Tebow signing and I'm hoping he improves, but I'm dismayed with what I've seen. He has unfortunately regressed in my opinion. The last year with the Jets was a bad situation for his development.

I also have no idea why he's running the option in preseason -- everyone knows he can do that. He should be practicing his pocket passing skills.

Here is the problem with using Tebow at another position, he fumbles the ball once for every ten times he runs with it, which is off the charts bad and completely unacceptable

Remind him of sin of pride, ask him if he is willing to play half/fullback/TE in certain packages. If not, if he insists he is a QB, cut him. Yesterday.

Cassell 2008 >> Tebow 2013
Wasn't a Tebow to the Patriots fan although I really enjoyed his 2011 season at Denver. Just reacted here against the many who were against his very existence per se. He's regressed.

I fear that BB will waste a roster spot on him. Time to leave the Patriots. I'm fine with no #3. If Brady misses a game, prep Edes to handoff as 3rd QB.
