Mallett Takes Lead In Brady Backup Derby

I had no idea there actually was a "Brady Backup Derby."

Or that Mallett was ever tied with Tebow. . . .

Then again, look who wrote this. :nooo:

Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

I know there is an article here about Mallett pulling into the lead....but is anyone who watched the game really confident that this guy could step right in if Brady went down and productively run this O? I am not. Was MUCH more confident in Brian Hoyer than this guy! (Which brings to mind...is Hoyer available?) Mallett has had a fair amount of time to learn the o and show that he can run it effectively/productively. But he is erratic, has the bledsoe happy feet, and misses throws all over the place. I know he threw the TD...which was great for him....but other than that did he really impress u guys? Do you feel comfortable with him coming in if god forbid TFB goes down? Thanks

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

Who would you rather have in there?

Who would you consider to be the "better backups" in the league?

Could they run this system?

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

I was very encouraged last night. The Vereen drop probably cost another TD from the 2 minute drill late in the first half, then two penalties took away the decent FG attempt.

12-20 with some drops, some good pocket awareness like on one instance being pressured and also having the called screen play blown up by the D & avoiding a sack by slinging the ball at Vereen's feet.

Mallett played fine. He's no Brady, but that's a crazy high bar. He's no Tebow, that's a crazy low bar. i am more comfortable with him than I was in the preseason 2008 with Cassel.

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

I thought he did great once he got comfortable. He seemed to understand what the heck he was doing. I liked what I saw and I was interested in seeing more from him than I was from Tebow.

I think it a little unrealistic to expect a backup to give you the type of confidence a starter would. THat's why they're backups.

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

I feel pretty comfortable with Mallett, he seems ready to be a starter somewhere actually. Its not fair to compare him with Brady, he's somewhere in a class above elite where few have ever been. I think Mallett is the 2nd best QB on the Pats and in the division to be honest. If Brady went down the offense would rally around Mallett and become run/play action heavy just like in 2000 when Bledsoe went down. We'll be fine :)

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

From what I have seen of him? Not really. He appears to have moved backward rather than forward in his development in his past two appearances. It was not all negative by any stretch of the imagination, just not particularly good as a whole.

With that said, I find it very difficult to read backup QBs in the preseason. Many here were looking for Cassel's head in the 2008 preseason, but he did just fine when called in to replace Brady. The coaches see these guys every day, so I expect they will frequently see something fans cannot see in a preseason game or games. I expect backups may push too hard in these limited appearances, trying to show everything at once, and then just end up looking bad.

Would I feel good if he came in for Brady for an extended period? No. But then again, I wouldn't feel great if Hoyer came in for Brady either. The ceiling on expectations falls drastically with a backup QB (while Brady was technically Bledsoe's backup, he had clawed his way though the depth chart and was a legitimate conteder for the starting role). If a team has visions of titles, that change pretty much kills them. Good teams will find it hard to keep two starting caliber QBs on a roster. At this point, it is hard to tell what level Mallet might play at if given the chance, but I wouldn't write him off as the coaches apparently see his potential.

He could very well be the 2nd best QB in the division - good point.

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

Im still on the fence.

Mallet has looked good in 1 pre season game vs Tampa. Tampa had the 32nd ranked pass defense in the NFL last season. Brady went through that pass defense last night like sheet through a goose.

Tebow will play himself down the road with more performances like last night.

He looks as good, if not better, than Matt Cassell did in the 2008 preseason!

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

That was by far his best game as a Patriot, and he was 12-20, 137 yards and 1 TD. Good, but nothing to write home about. He looked solid when they opened up the offense, and got him in shotgun on the spread, but I still think he's got accuracy issues.

Encouraging performance by Mallett yesterday, but if Brady went down I'm still not close to feeling "really good" about him.

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

I thought that he had a poor start in both games this preseason but after the first series or two he played well. It actually gave me some confidence that if we need him in there for a game or two that they aren't automatic L's.

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

Well no backup is going to make you confident about replacing the GOAT.

OTOH I am more confident in Mallet than Cassell or Hoyer.

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

The Hammah started out poorly showing the trademark inaccuracy* that we've seen before. However, after perhaps overcoming rust, jitters or whatever he improved. Had less solid OL protection than The GOAT. Very Bledsoe like, strong arm but can't throw the touch pass. But unlike The Statue, Mallett seems to make better reads and decisions. Probably over analysis from the brief look we had. Decent #2 QB.

* I do feel a bit harsh labeling The Hammer as inaccurate after watching the GOAT of inaccuracy, Tim Tebow attempt to play QB

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

I was, still am and will always be confident in Mallet. It's all about reps and you saw that the more he played, the better he got. His arm is legit and his reads and decision making are improving. The more he plays, the more he is going to prove his doubters wrong.

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

137 passing yards in one quarter is evidence of sucking, to some people

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

I feel great to be honest. He's heading into his third year of barely playing, he looked fine once he settled into the game speed; also if he had to start the offense would change a little more to his strengths, passing downfield. One of the better backup QBs IMO and he has a legit shot to end up as a Flacooo type starter once he gets his chance.

Re: Does anyone feel really good about Mallett right now?

With the exception of a couple guys named Grogan and Brady he is as good or better than the other back ups we've had.
