Diamond in the rough?

Lets hope so

30+ year old vets are rarely considered diamonds in the rough.

lol this, more like very underrated pickup. If we can get something out of Armstead and can keep Kelly and Wilfork fresh throught games and the season....:D

It was actually amusing seeing him and Wilfork lined up next to each other. He has never played with a 1tech like Wilfork who can eat up 2 lineman every down.

Seymour actually forced him to 1tech so he never has the opportunity to work 1on1 regularly.

when you get to that age (32) at DL...anything can happen especially at that weight...i still consider it a diamond in the rough they got in FA if he stays healthy

Hmm, I remember you making fun of me for saying Kelly will be an impact player when he was signed :singing:

really....thought he was a good signing...can't remember

With him and Wilfork...Good luck running against that.

Though I'm impressed with Kelly, I'll wait to reserve judgment until the regular season starts rolling. I was impressed with the Wilfork-Haynesworth tandem too in 2011's preseason and that flamed out quickly once the season started.

Hopefully Kelly isn't the sloth that Fat Al was, but at this point I'm cautiously optimistic.

If he performs a similar role and plays to or above the level of a guy like Gerard Warren, it would be a great pickup. I'm hoping that some of the younger guys fulfill that role.

There's zero percent chance that Kelly/Wilfork won't be playing side by side unless there's an injury. No one is going to beat Kelly for a spot next to Vince.

The depth behind them is an enormous concern however.

Exactly. DT is the biggest ?? on the team. If/when Armstead comes back it should make a big difference.

I'm still holding out hope there is going to be a surprise cut on cut-down day that the Pats can scoop up.

I really liked the Kelly signing, he should make a big difference. (no pun intended)

If he's only as good as Gerard Warren, the Patriots are in a heap of trouble.

Just in case you want to be a writer someday...a diamond in the rough would be talent that needs polish. Someone that's green, raw etc. Kelly would be more along the line of a good find or a "grizzled veteran."

Just having fun with you, but the previous posters are right, your phrase wouldn't apply to a former pro bowler.:)

I'll have to agree with that and I liked Warren. He underperformed his draft spot but was a solid rotational player for us for a while. Kelly, on the other hand, wasn't brought here to be a role player.

Last year, teams started to scheme to take Vince out of the play and give some free shots to the likes of love and Deaderick. They couldn't take advantage. Kelly should kill teams if they do that. Now with Armstead a mystery at this point, it seems they need one guy who can hold his own and that swiss cheese line near the end of the game wasn't encouraging.
