Ryan Mallett: Is he as good as thought/hoped? Is he the future starting QB?

I think Ryan Mallett is way over rated by the fans and the media kinda plays into that. the reality is no one is kicking down the patriots door to offer the pats even the 3rd round pick that they give for him, that dose not mean he cant be a starting QB one day but he has not shown anything that says he's the next Brady he has a good arm but Michael Bishop had a big arm to

I think the Patriots will be waiting a very very long time for a guy who is "the next Brady".

How could any of us posting here possibly know the answer to that question, unless we are not only part of the Patriots organization but also have access to the thinking of Belichick et al, which, as far as I know, 99.9% of us do not have?

I see Brady playing and being productive until he is 40-42 years old; he is in remarkable shape, takes great care of himself, he looks like he is in his mid 20's. If Brett Farve who was never in great shape, had a history of alcohol and substance abuse can play till he is 40 it will not be an issue for Brady.

This is why I think anyone that thinks Mallett or Tebow (Steve Young Jr.) are going to be the QB of the future aren't looking at the big picture. Both these guys will be 30+ years old taking over, that is not an ideal situation. Steve Young had a great career, however the turn around time at which the 49ers needed to have another franchise QB on hand was so short and that contributed to a much larger rebuild than say the Colts had to go through.

I do think Mallett can be a part of the replacement process for Brady and I've outlined that potential process below.

Trade A
Trade Mallet for 2014 3rd RD pick.
Trade 2014 3rd RD pick for 2015 2nd RD pick.
Trade 2015 2nd RD pick for 2016 1st RD pick

Trade B
Trade Mallett for 2015 2nd RD pick.
Trade 2015 2nd RD pick for 2016 1st RD pick.

I really think it would be ideal to have a 1st RD draft pick to be used on a QB in 2016, this would allow you to have the QB spend 2016 (rookie season) and 2017 (2nd season) before taking over the team as the starter in 2018. 2016 also looks to be a promising QB class.

I was in Baltimore and DC at the end of Unitas and Jurgenson's careers. There were the stupid fans that couldn't accept the reality that their hero was done. Sounds like a lot of you denying reality, and saying TB can play until he is 42. Favre thought so too, and he was an embarassment in his dotage. I'm sick of the clowns that salivate at a thought of a #2 or #3 draft pick as being worth anything. Without a QB, the team will stink and lose. Plus they never calculate what it would cost to get a replacement, and successor candidate.

Your proposal is an idea, but you have the costs ALL wrong. If the Pats are still good, it will cost us at minimum TWO first round draft picks to get into the range to draft a highly sought franchise guy. More likely it will cost even more, like Three +. Look at the RG III costs.

Now if you want to commit to a half dozen years of losing seasons then you can draft a QB yourself, but then the present rebuilding job, just about finished, will have grown over-aged and fading. So you will be starting over there too. That makes it even more difficult on a young QB.

Plus there is no guarantee you will have anything with your QB pick. The terrible Pats used an overall #1 pick to get Plunkett, and he got beat up and never amounted to anything with the Pats. It wasn't until he went to a loaded team like the Raiders were then, that he won.

Have you forgotten Mr. Hannah's description of the "skirted one"? He was a #1 QB pick too. Bledsoe was an overall #1 pick and was better. But the batting average was about 1 in 3, for #1 picks. Still none are HOF QBs either.

You guys better damn well hope Mallett can be at least a Cassel type guy if not better, or welcome back to the Clive Rush and **** McPherson 2-14 years.

I remember those and don't want to go back.

Embarassment?

Ummm... Favre had his best season in 2009 with the Vikings... well after some people thought he was too old to play.

Brett Favre was an MVP candidate in his penultimate season, at the age of 40, and he took the eventual SB champs into overtime of the NFCCG that season.

Pretty much every fan base would kill to have a QB being that kind of "embarassment" in his dotage.

Has Mallett shown potential for even being a legit NFL QB much less a franchise QB? He’s about to start his 3rd season and it seems that he still has the same issues he had in college, he’s not refining himself into starting QB material. So, if he doesn’t have what it takes why not get what you can for him? It’s possible we can use that 2nd or 3rd round pick to get someone who might have potential, I’d even be fine with a reasonable trade to get Brad Sorensen or Alex Tanney, at least they haven’t shown that they can’t improve.

I suspect Belichick's son is also likely brilliant when it comes to football knowledge. That is not what Jonathan needs to be part of top management of the team. Management is a skill; Jonathan will get the best.

As I said, if Brady's name is really needed to continue the value of the brand, something will be worked out.

I don't think it's about marketing, I think it's about Tom Brady being an intelligent man. He makes excellent decisions off the field in real estate along with other business ventures, and he is obviously brilliant when it pertains to football knowledge.

The Patriots also don't need marketing right now because they have Tom Brady as their QB, when he isn't it is unknown what will be needed.

He won squat! Plus he sabotaged Aaron Rodgers for a couple of years. Watching his hijinks, was like watching a soap opera.

Also, Lord Favrequad made his debut in 1991. Brady made his debut in 2001.

I'm not saying that's enough to extend Brady's career by 20 years or anything, but the state of sports medicine has improved a lot over the years. Is it a given that he can play at 42? No. Would I bet against it? No.

First off, teams win and lose, blaming/crediting it exclusively to the QB is silly. Next, Farve proved it can be done, and he doesn’t have a fraction of Brady’s dedication. As long as TFB has the receivers and protection he might be highly effective beyond 42.

Well, they had enough faith in Mallett that they didn't even sign an UDFA QB to come into camp after the draft.

Are we still talking about his ability to play football at 40 years old, or something different? You're changing the subject all over the place.

Ryan Mallett is the best hope the Patriots have to extend their winning ways past the Brady years. There I said it. Protest and Blubber all you want.

If you want to strip down the team and like the Clots did, so they could "Suck for Luck", you have to expect a 1-15 record and do it in a year when there is a great QB in the draft. The Pats did it one year, and only Ken Sims was there, no QBs.

I don't give damn about a second or third draft pick. This is not the time when Tom Brady was 28, and the only motive was scoring a draft pick. All the false bravado and proclamations that he can play until 42, or 50 is just wishful blubbering. It doesn't obscure the fact that the end of the road is coming, soon.

I see the improvement in Mallett, and so does Bill Belichick. I saw it too in Cassell's FOURTH preseason, when most did not. You have to be blind not to see it. I think he is doing extremely well for entering just his SECOND preseason.

That is what it is, in reality. His rookie training was wiped out by the lockout and NFLPA CBA negotiations. So he is a third year guy, but this is only the beginning of his second preseason. The only time when and where he can get real instruction and coaching, on a Superbowl contender. He can also display his abilities.

If I recall there were rumors, but no proof, that he was immature, as there was no way possible to criticize his athletic gifts. Some said he was just a country hick and hayseed. Well the passage of three years have given him some time to grow up and mature, even if he couldn't do much for his on field improvement.

The coaching he has received show his footwork is improved and more consistent. This has greatly reduced if not eliminated the passes that sailed on him. Belichick has confirmed this improvement. I see he has developed some touch on shorter throws too.

Critics also say he is inaccurate compared to Tom Brady, but now they are talking about a foot or two, not 10 yards over the receiver. But no one else is as accurate as Tom Brady on medium and short throws, either.

There is no decision that has to be made until the end of 2014 two seasons away, and that decision then, is merely whether to pay him to remain a Patriot. We have this preseason, and then next year's preseason to see if he is not just an NFL capable QB, we already know that, but a player capable of being a franchise QB.

I'm awaiting the gnashing of teeth. Spittle, and the rending of garments.

Blubberers line up on the left. Protesters on the right. Tebownitwits in the middle. Have at it guys.

How much do you think the Pats are willing to pay a player who is going to be sitting on the bench? Do you think Mallett will accept the role of being a backup when he can sign elsewhere and compete for a job? Do we really want a player who is content with being a backup?

Other QBs aren't available, and won't be soon? How do you know who they will or won't be able to get with any picks gotten from trading Mallett?

You do know that BB basically put Mallett on the trading block before the last draft and got no takers? How much faith does BB have in him if he's so willing to let him go?

How much do you think the Pats are willing to pay a player who is going to be sitting on the bench? Do you think Mallett will accept the role of being a backup when he can sign elsewhere and compete for a job? Do we really want a player who is content with being a backup?

who says he's going to be sitting on the bench? lots can happen to a 36 year old QB over the next 2 years......

regardless, the bigger point is that there are 2 more seasons where this is not even an issue except to the talking heads

So, what year do you expect Mallet to take over?

Assuming Brady is not injured, I expect he wil lbe sharing the QB duties in 2015 as the transition begins. It will probably be a condition on whether he resigns. Otherwise they will likely have to franchise/transition him to keep him.

Then it will be sink or swim...

But Bishop was illiterate and couldn't read or write a game plan. Amazing what he did with this disadvantage but an impossible handicap as a Pro QB.
