Why Americans hate soccer

Poor sports?? Football is a poor sport??? Thats why teams pay £50million+ for a player, and then pay him £150,000+ a week to play!

You are clearly blind!

he's also been banned ...

I couldn't see any of that game here (and you can't download clips off the BBC website) so, thanks. I'd read about Bale's performance but hadn't seen any of it. :rocker:

Liverpool should have got Bale when they had the chance, even more of a poor decision when you see Liverpools current left hand side. Walcott and Lennon were also decided against despite Walcott only costing 500k at the time and Lennon only 1 million from Leeds.

count me in as a American who has zero interest in soccer. idc what the rest of the world likes. baseball basketball hockey and football thank you very much. oh and the ufc.

It's pretty strange that a lof of Americans don't care about soccer, it is the most popular sport in almost every country in the world.

StadiumZone - Home

shows how gigantic soccer is in the world. I like both soccer and football, but don't understand why MLS is still not one of the big guys in the US. I think the main reason soccer is not as fast as other sports, but that's not a disadvantage if you ask me. You need much more stamina for soccer than for baseball or basketball for example.

I just cant get over the diving. But I will always watch the Euro/World cups!

Well I was born and raised in Boston and I love soccer. Massive Celtic fan.

MLS is growing here in America slowly. The attendence along with rowdy crowds in some parts of the country especially the northwest (ie: Seattle, Portland) attests to this. TV ratings are slowly improving as well. Not to mention there's a good reason why NBC is investing into MLS. Its because they see a long term future in the league so they want to get a part of the broadcasting rights. Can't blame NBC for jumping in not to mention taking away the rights from FOX who pretty much did little to help grow the league. I will admit that MLS won't overtake say NFL or MLB but it will have its place to be successful on its own terms.

(Now only if our beloved Robert Kraft would quit treating the Revs as a complete non priority and put some money into the team)

Take the worst elements of hockey and basketball and play it on grass.

Flopping and low scoring.

Eh.... I've watched a number of games both on TV and in person that never had flopping and both teams tried very hard to score. I actually love tight close games when it comes to soccer when both teams are getting creative in trying to score. Very fun to watch and even more fun when eventually one team finally manages to control the lead.

(Unless if its the Revs or the MN Stars in which I'd rather simply see them blow out the other team or at least dominate them to win)

Oh, I totally believe it can be exciting and fun to watch. I followed the World Cup and the USA Woman's team last year, but the general consensus is that soccer is boring and is filled with floppers, (at least according to the people I talk to). That and the fact that it isn't easily adapted for commercial breaks hinders its popularity growth.

I understand why many Americans hate it. What I don't understand, however, is this compulsion to both express said hatred and justify that hatred every time the subject of soccer comes up. It's not like the French, English, Italian, Dutch, Brazilians, Ghanaians, Chinese, Bhutanese and so forth rant on and on about how much baseball sucks every Oct. You don't like it. Fine. Get over it and move on. No one really cares!!!

And I cannot wait until the next Barca v Real Madrid match. :rocker:

I should add the above was not intended at any one the replies here or anyone who commented. For the most part, this thread has been tame and mostly respectful.

I love the World Cup but cant seem to get into any of the other matches overseas or here in the U.S.

Oh yes they do. There's a video games forum I visit where the flood gates open if one starts a Football thread that isn't prefixed with 'American'

They call it Hand Egg
They say our players are sissies for wearing padding
They say maybe if everyone wasn't so fat the game wouldn't require a 30 second break for every 5 seconds of play.

^Fine, then feel free to continue the fierce "soccer sucks" jihad in retribution every chance you get.

Messi scored FIVE goals in a game! Unbelievable.:woohoo:

Oh no. While I don't really follow the game I'm quite aware of its popularity. Its like Calculus to me. I don't really get it, but I acknowledge its importance. Besides, my favorite sport is Baseball. So you won't catch me throwing stones.

Even though I am a massive "football" fan. Soccer is a bigger sport worldwide :bricks:

I don't care much for the sport, but I will watch the world cup that's always somewhat a little fun especially when a lot of places hold little parties just a great enviroment.
