Jabar Gaffney, Austin Collie in for tryouts

Watched this vid yesterday and was wondering, if Collie is 100% what are his chances of making the team and how do people see him fitting in if he makes the team?

I don't know much about him other than, he was a reliable target for a few years before getting injured.

Well, for one, the Pats usually came out in 3WR sets throughout the game in 2007. For another, Gaffney was lining up at split end at the end of the season, effectively making him WR2 for the Pats during that season.

He was the #3 WR behind Welker and Moss and only had 36 catches for 449 yards and 5 TDs for the season. Those are solid #3 numbers, but nothing like what Moss or Welker were doing. Also, Stallworth had more receptions and yards, Watson had as many receptions and more TDs, and Faulk had more receptions.

Besides, we are talking 5 years ago. I don't really know what it has to do with today or even last year. Especially now that it has been reported that the Pats' interest in Gaffney was erroneous.

As well he shouldn't have been. He was done. Toast. Anybody that watched him at the end of the 2011 season would have seen that. There were a lot of receivers in the league that would have been better options than Branch last season. Gaffney, free of injury, would have been one of them.

Again, I never said I thought having Branch on the team was a good thing. But Gaffney never showed that he was the better option over him. Whether they knew he had an injury that would hamper him all year or they thought he was done, Gaffney was far less effective last season than Branch and Branch sucked.

Gaffney was not Moss and Welker. Further, he only assumed the split end role in the second half of the season.

We're talking about 5 years ago because you tried to make the point that Gaffney was nothing special up until his days in Denver. I pointed out that he was the split-end on the greatest offense in NFL history.

I don't see how Gaffney, when healthy in this offense, couldn't have been a better option than Branch. He was just coming off of a solid season, had more athleticism, more left in the tank, and more ability to separate plus experience in the offense. The biggest difference is that Gaffney came in injured, then got buried behind two guys with a plethora of experience on the team he went to on the depth chart while Branch saw a lot of action on a team that, outside of Welker, wasn't exactly a powerhouse in the WR department either and still couldn't do much.

Its really easy to make an argument when you just redefine terms as you see fit.

When the Patriots went to 2 WR sets, Gaffney came off the field, and Welker moved to SE. That means Welker is the WR2.

If he was healthy, he'd be the second best receiver on the team after Amendola. But his health problems aren't unrelated physical injuries like Amendola's, they're repeated head trauma.

Try reading my post again, buddy.

I reread what you wrote. OK, you are saying that "Gaffney has always been more successful with our system than any other one"

His best year here was 38/468/2 or lets say 2007 when he went 36/449/5

Here are his stats for other years on other teams:

41/483/1 HOU
41/632/2 HOU
55/492/2 HOU
54/732/2 DEN
65/875/2 DEN
68/947/5 WASH

So I dont see how he has been more successful with our system when his Houston numbers were on par or slightly better. His Washington numbers blew away his NE numbers. His Denver numbers are also clearly superior to his NE numbers but obviously that is part of the system we are talking about. Still it does not explain the other seasons.

I like Gaff and always thought he was a baller. However I dont think statistically he was better in any system over another. The guy was consistent. But he was hurt last year and would not have been an upgrade over Branch. Also, he was not the #2 on the 2007 Pats squad ever, no way and now how. He was the number 4 and was moving into the number 3.

Not sure Gaffney was as injured as you make him out to be. He was originally put on the injury report in Week 11 and was off the next week. But, he was competing with two guys in Hartline and Bess that had more experience with the Dolphins in their system than he did. Not to mention he didn't exactly get a head start. Again, Gaffney has always been more successful in our system throughout his career than any other one.

.

This is completely wrong, in fact backwards.

In Houston 64 games 171/2009 2.7/31.4 per game
In Denver 32 119/1607 3.7/50.2 per game
In Wash 16 68/947 4.3/59.2 per game
In NE 43 85/1059 2.0/24.6 per game

In fact Gaffney has always been LESS successful in our system throughout his career than any other one.

Top Seasons by Receptions:
1) Wash
2) Den
3) Houston
4) Den
5) Houston
6) Houston
7) NE

His top yardage season in NE was also his 7th best.

Outside of last year he has had 1 season ever anywhere else with fewer receptions and yards than his best year here.

3 of his 4 least productive seasons were the 3 he spent here.

He was the #3 option. But he was the split end which makes him WR2. Besides that, a #3 otpion in the greatest offense of all time, behind Moss and Welker, is a pretty good thing.

Except he wasn't.
Stallworth had 46/697 Gaffney 36/449
Kevin Faulk also caught more passes with 47.
Ben Watson tied Gaffney for 5th option with 36 catches.

Gaffney was not Moss and Welker. Further, he only assumed the split end role in the second half of the season.

Randy Moss was the SE.

BB disagrees.

I may be off base BUT...I think Bravo was making a sly reference to Timmy....and Lassie...the collie...

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

Yes, just because I chose to add another line about the situation re: Austin Collie doesn't mean that the attempt at humor went over my head.

...Joe Kerr walks over to well and leans over...peers down...."Hey!!...Timmy!!...what are you doin' with that bucket on your head???....everybody knows...tricks are for hookers...Trix are for kids...now get up on out of there before Zeb sells Lassie to the U.S. Forest Service and runs off with June Lockhart to Vegas...

Get Donte Stallworth on speed dial. :rocker:

I assume that you're probably just kidding, but if you're not or you simply haven't heard yet, he signed with the Redskins.

What a bummer...

I'm assuming that any talk of Gaffney was simply a mistake due to false reports on Tuesday when it turned out to be Chaz Schilens?

Otherwise, I haven't heard one word about Jabar Gaffney myself. Then again, I'm not living in the area so you all may have heard something that I haven't.

I know I'm way off base to feel this way but I just can't get inspired by any NFL football player named Chaz...

Go Chaz!!!!...YAY!!!

sounds like some prep school badminton tourney chant...

So you want to tell a football player he isn't allowed to play football even when Doctors have cleared him?
Perhaps bars should install breathalizers and not serve anyone who is at the legal driving limit since they can't be trusted to act in their own best interest.
Maybe we should go for sterilization of people with low incomes, IQs, or medical and psychological issues.
Not really busting your b@lls just pointing out that you can extend taking someones rights away from them because you consider it better for them a long way.

Finally! Someone who understands my political views!!
.
.
.
Just kidding of course.

Gaffney was suspended for two games a couple days after his release by the Dolphins, a suspension he would have to serve if any team decided to sign him. That's why it was sort of surprising when it was reported that he was in for a workout with the Patriots, and not at all surprising when it turned out that it was erroneous.

Why would that be surprising? It's not as if the Patriots and player suspensions have been a mutually exclusive thing.

Because you'd sign a guy only to lose him for the first two games, and for a 34 year old who looked old and slow when he stepped onto the field last year that probably isn't worth the pain. I'd imagine it's the reason the Dolphins released him and no one bothered to kick his tires last season.
