It obviously screws coaches out of a couple weeks down time. Was there a good reason?

The goal is to have to a NFL event every month. I've heard they want to bump the rookie combine to March and delay free agency until April.

Personally, I don't like it.

Why else? Because Roger "Disingenuous" Goodell has come up with another bright idea for wheedling $$$ from the American populace. As usual, it has nothing at all to do with what's good for the fans or good for the game itself.

Money.

And a lack of heart.

The NFL is trying to add football games to their season either in regular or post season, then stretch the rest of the season out...

It is all about marketing and money..

I don't understand the issue with moving it back a couple of weeks.

Jan is the playoffs, Feb is the SB, March is the combine and FA signing with their own teams, April is FA and May is the Draft after the furor from the first 3 weeks of FA has died down. it will be 3 weeks of build up to the draft.

Then rookie camps in late may and Mini camps in June and then the start of TC in July.

In addition, everyone knows that it couldn't possibly be held anyplace other than Radio City Music Hall, or some other venue in the world's largest sewer, aka New York City. How would we ever live without the obnoxiousness and arrogance of attending Jets and Giants fans?

Jets fans in particular put a damper on this event. Their childish booing of everything involving AFCE opponents should be grounds for ejection. Hell, they even booed Joe Andruzzi when he addressed the Boston Marathon bombing this year.

This was the actual reason given by Goodell, IIRC, which is so absurd it is embarrassing. But it raises another important point: why do the NY teams get to have the advantage of having the draft in their home territory every year? It is a marketing opportunity for local NFL teams. Shouldn't it be rotated from NFL city to NFL city? Why isn't this an issue?!?!?!!!

Let's get a petition, web site, and social media campaign going, simply for the pleasure of watching Goodell twitch as he defends the only thing left that keeps national attention on the Jets that isn't about buffoonery.

They really outta move it around. No reason New York should get to host it every year. Bring the draft to boston. And nobody wants to wait another month for the draft...

This is such a non-issue. Its simply a marketing tool to potentially grab more money from corporate America, and keep the NFL in the public's eye all year round, instead of the 6 months they actually play.

And to further expand the topic: While I'm totally against any expansion of the Playoffs by adding more teams, I have become more and more good with the eliminating 2 preseason games and adding 2 more regular season games.

I know all the reasons against this idea, but the fact is, with the new CBA, players are doing less contact these days than they .did in my day when they had a 12 game season. Think about it. In my day (early 70's) training camps were about longer, and we had had 2 a days's for 5 weeks, and it was a rare day when one of the practices were with shorts and t-shirts. Back in the day teams teams would routinely practice in Pads Wednesday and Thursday...at least.

Now, 2 a days in TC are a thing of the past, and half of those practices no longer are in full pads. Then once the season starts teams are severely limited in how many practices they can have in pads. I don't recall the number off hand, but its well less than once a week.

The fact is that even with the addition of 2 regular season games, to go along with the elimination of 2 pre-season games wouldn't raise the potential for injuries that much higher for players.

Also for the players it is probably going to be the only way for them to see a significant increase in the cap, plus I am sure that any increase to the regular season will come with an increase in the roster sizes. All of which are good things for the NFLPA

BTW- teams could further limit contact and injuries to their teams by arranging more joint practices with other teams

Adding two more games is the single worst idea the NFL has ever had and the players should refuse to go along with it under any conditions.

Moving the Draft sucks.

When this first came up, it was mentioned that the league would not be able to get into Radio City Music Hall at the same time next year because someone had already booked it for the 2 weeks that the NFL would have wanted. The league had a choice of either moving the draft to another city or moving it back into May.

So, lets look at the first option. Moving to another city. What city has a venue the size of Radio City Music hall that the league could have gotten into on less than 1 year's notice???? Now, knowing this, it begs the question of why the league waited so long to start exploring other options because you damn well know that Radio City probably told them months ago that someone had booked the venue for those weeks in 2014.

The easiest choice for the league and NFLPA was to move it back into May for 2014.. Whether or not that is a permanent thing remains to be seen..

Easter falls on the weekend in April the draft would have been. It had to be moved b/c the Music Hall was booked for the Easter festivities.

Book it somewhere else. Evidently, if that facility burned to the ground the NFL draft would cease to exist.

There's no reason the NFL couldn't have already had a stranglehold on radio City for that weekend for as long as they wished. Ken's contention, that it is related to a desire to expand the season and play-off's is the more likely scenario, and unfortunately so, because both an expanded season and expanded play-off's will diminish the product. I can't imagine any reason, money included, why the players would ever agree to a longer season, this one already destroys their bodies for the long term. If it is mediocrity to the extreme that the league really wants then 18 games with half the leaguer making the play-off's is definitely the best route to go.

Sports fans are busy in May with NBA and/or NHL playoffs. If I had the choice between watching my team in the playoffs or the draft, I'm picking playoffs. Don't see what was wrong with April

I don't think this is going to impact people's lives nearly as much as some are claiming.

As a fan, adding two games would suck because it would further dilute the importance of division games.

Adding more playoff teams would be an even worse idea, though.

As would adding a 33rd team and unbalancing the schedule.

I disagree. Players are much different now than back then, Ken, in terms of size, speed, strength and the pro game's overall stress on connective tissues. Most starters don't log that much time over the four preseason games. I cringe at thoughts of a Tom Brady or Vince Wilfork forced to survive 18 regular-season games plus playoffs. Two bye weeks might help somewhat, but I think roster attrition would notably increase from an 18-game season. Each game would carry less importance, players and coaches would throttle back to physically and mentally endure the longer schedule. The game would be watered down. Not a good prospect overall.
