Diabetes can be very difficult to manage, particularly if you are a professional athlete.

Most newly diagnosed Diabetics (even type 2) have Bloodsugar numbers which are out of control (200-300+) and this must be addressed immediately with insulin, otherwise they can damage your internal organs in a short period of time.

The problem with administering insulin is that it is difficult to tell how your body will react to each dosage, it takes time to determine what is the perfect amount which must be administered throughout the day and before meals, also, when you have administered insulin and you become physically active, the insulin gets absorbed into the fat tissue at a faster rate, meaning that even if you administer the normal dose, your blood-sugar may drop precipitously if you are also conducting varying levels of activity.

High bloodsugar can cause lethargy, impaired vision, peripheral numbness, constant urination and constant thirst.

While more dangerous low Bloodsugar can cause confusion, severe lethargy (to the point of passing out), sudden fatigue, and potentially death (with an insulin overdose).

Though it is 'just Type 2 Diabetes' the patriots must have concluded that he wasn't worth the extra hassle. its too bad. Kyle Love should concentrate on getting healthy so he can get rid of his diabetes, health is the most important thing in life and diabetes at such a young age can cause huge problems down the road if it is not properly managed.

Everyone is different, but diabetes can be managed fairly easily for most people *IF* they are willing to put the effort in. Type 2 is often handled by pills, exercise and diet. And often involves weight loss to better control the condition. This could have been an issue- his doctor told him to lose 60 lbs at least and that obviously doesn't bode well for his current career.

OR... they were cutting him anyway and it happened to coincide with the diagnosis.

Diabetes related damage to organs does not usually happen in a short period of time. Technically damage begins, but it takes a while to accumulate and is years later that you find out about it, and in some cases too late.

Determining insulin dosages is largely a question of insulin sensitivity and insulin to carb ratio, both of which can be determined in a few weeks, then fine tuned, assuming a doctor, nurse, and/or diabetic educator are assisting. I'm sure the Patriots have a few good Doctor's numbers on file! Since he had type two, it's not a relevant point. Not trying to argue. Most of your post was very good and largely accurate, but some of the views were a bit extreme IMO.

Well, that sucks. Love and Deadrick all in one week. They must think Kelly will rebound from a bad season last year and/or Armstead will emerge as a solid starter. Even if Love is being released due to medical reasons, they couldn't have found out about this today.

They both represented the Patriots well and I wish them well.

And so they released Deaderick why exactly?

Bil is as tired as I am about reading the 'My 53' posts ...

when will you 53 people ever learn ... 53 is just a league mandated number.

guess Collins IS going to be an OLB, huh?

who'd a thunk it?... I mean he was categorically slammed and lambasted for being "too light in the seat" and "unable to rush the passer and I saw every play against Kansas State!!" to play the D line.

oh well, looks like all the "experts" will have to re-re-re-re-re-re-revise their mock 90, and mock 53 rosters now to get ready for the all important June dead silent period...

Feel bad for Love getting his career her cut short, maintaining weight to play NT/DT and living with Diabetes would be tough, all the money in the world doesn't help if you are dead, how he can get his health taken care of.

Time to kick tires on reclamation project, Sedrick Ellis?

The FA pickings are slim...

Pouha? If we could get him for vet min and let him compete for a backup role.

Seymour might be a nice pickup if he's interested

Not comfortable with the DL cuts at this time. Just like with the safety cuts in 2011, why the rush? People get hurt in camp. Things happen. Why not cut the guys when you have to get down to a # and your assessment is that definitively you have 2 new better and healthy replacements? How can the last two goys out of 90 be more important than keeping 2 guys who have played NFL games?

Love was not cut based on performance. Rather, he was released because he was a diabetic, and for him to maintain 300+ pounds as a DT could cause some serious health issues. While Love says he has regained most of his weight that he lost, the Patriots can't be so certain that his weight will remain stable.

It's unfortunate, yet understandable. I really do wish him all the best and hope that he goes to a contender, but at the same time, I'm not losing sleep.

Seymour has stated that he is willing to play for 31 teams. Team #32 is the Patriots. The Pats waited until his kids were established in school before trading him. He had to delay joining the Raiders until he resettled his
family.

Things like this need to stop.

1.) He said that awhile ago, he has more recently been cited as a source nudging his friends to join the Patriot's because they're a great organization with a winning attitude.

2.) New England didn't "wait for his kids to be established in school before trading him." It was an unfortunate by-product. Everybody makes it sound so malacious, like it was our intention to **** with his family. Just because.

We got an offer we liked and took it at the time we did. BB didn't go out of his way to ensure that Seymour's kids started school so he'd have to pluck them up, and while I'm sure Seymour wasn't happy, he isn't stupid. If he didn't understand it then, he understands now that football is a buisiness, and if you run your team with emotions you won't go anywhere. You do whatever it takes to better your team, even if it means trading a star before his prime is over because you know you can't afford him the next season and he'll walk for a mere 3rd or 4th round draft pick.

Well that sucks. I really liked Love. I kind of wish we hadn't released Deaderick now.

No longer having players who werent very good isn't really a cause for concern.

Agreed.
I liked Love as he was a guy who played above expectations. I hope he does well managing his illness as well as landing a spot on another team. But BB owes it to the Patriots to put the best team on the field (what he believes is best). If Love's illness was one of the factors in BB deciding to cut him, I am ok with that. I prefer the BB way, the cold business approach instead of losing more often but everyone thinks your a 'swell guy'. ((though I hope the CBA mandates Love receive a better payout)).

With all that said, Love is not a loss of any real significance unless the 2013 season sees the Patriots run D regress. And if it does regress and the loss of Love caused that regression? Marginally decent yet one dimensional run stoppers are definitely underpaid and unappreciated.

I assume these moves are aimed at trying to improve the pass rush (and to better contain mobile QBs?). Yet it is May 15th not September 5th. Our depth at DT when the season starts remains an unknown. Love's replacement may be a similar one dimensional run stopping DT. Stay tuned....

Well said. RS was stung by the trade and understandably so. He had the proverbial rug pulled out from him from the only team he had known. However, it was business and nothing more. The idea that BB was operating from a 'I'll show RS! I'll trade him late in camp and his family will now be in turmoil!!' is pretty funny. We weren't going to be re-signing him due to cost, we got an offer for a first round draft choice, we took it. Business!

I would think RS has been in the league long enough to have gained perspective. He wants money and he wants to win. Patriots need DL and Patriots can give a very tangible shot at winning. If the Patriots offered $$$ that RS feels is enough to play in 2013, he is going to choose the Jets or the Chiefs because of hurt feelings from years ago? What a clear sign he hasn't gained savvy from his many years in the league.

I think RS playing with the NEP in 2013 is very unlikely. But the suggested reason he won't, hurt feelings, just seems odd given he is a 33 year old veteran. Why he won't be playing here is because some other team will offer him the kind of money the Patriots will not, IMHO.

This seems very thin to me.

DE: Jones, Ninkovich, Francis, Bequette, Buchanan
DT: Wilfork, Armstead, Kelly, Cunningham, Forsten

I know that there are more UDFA's, but Francis, Buchanan and Forsten are enough for me.

Why are you placing Cunningham as a DT? He can pass rush from there. But he is in no way a DT. He only plays there on very obvious passing downs.

this is one of dose cuts the pats make every year that makes you scratch your head and think why did they cut him he was a good starter until the season starts and that player cant get on the field with a other team then you start to understand that's why the pats defense was so bad lol

His illness may/may not have played into his release (based on the article below I think it did) but one thing is clear about this 2013 NEP, if you play on the line and do not have the ability to generate a pass rush or collapse the pocket you will not play. While Love was a decent player, he didn't exactly do either one of those things well. Good motor and played the run well..

I remember in 2001 Tony George who was a safety and also a diabetic and the region thought that BB was callous for cutting him. Turns out he never played in the NFL again. Interesting article from George's PoV.

Defeat Diabetes: Two Titans Battle Diabetes Daily

As a second-year pro with the Patriots in 2000, George was in the same boat as every other player trying to make a good impression on his new coach, Bill Belichick.

''He had just given his no quit, no excuse philosophy,'' George said. ''I was thinking, 'How am I going to tell him my sugar is low, and I can't keep going?' ''

But one day during a conditioning test, George had to stop running. An average blood sugar level is 80-120, and his had dropped to a dangerously low 46. He needed a boost of sugar.

George failed the test and had to sit out practice as a penalty. He made the roster and played in 15 games that season but then was released and didn't play in the NFL last year.

Did Belichick know George had diabetes? George isn't sure.

''I was a quitter to him,'' he said. ''And I never quit anything in my life. From then on it was a tug-of-war between us.''

At the time, Belichick refused to say whether George's problems with the conditioning test were related to his diabetes.

Crap like this is why it's quite easy to detest this coach.
I literally laughed out loud when Bill's toady Tom E Curran tried to explain it away by dismissing the diabetes talk and saying the Pats were going 4 -3 and didn't need Love.

You detest the coach for parting ways with a player who is overrated by the fanbase that fell in love with him because he was undrafted, like they do with every undrafted player?

He's replaceable. This isn't the end of the world.

What I find ironic here is that Vince Wilfork's parents -- I think both -- died young to diabetes, making Vince into a diabetes charity activist.
