Which Pats player will be the 'shocker' cut/release/trade this offseason?

True, but both Brock Williams and Tyrone McKenzie were injured throughout their first year and then again in the offseason and into their second year with some serious injuries. Even then they were both signed to the practice squad the very next day.

Kevin O'Connell is the only "real" player who has been cut when healthy, and that may have been due to the fact that he was playing the position of QB. It may have simply been that Belichick and the staff felt that KOC just simply wasn't coming close to picking up the system.

Obviously, anyone can get cut, but I think the only way Bequette gets the axe is if he in either injured or just has shown absolutely nothing. Even then they'd likely bring him back to the practice squad the same way they did to Brock Williams and Tyrone McKenzie.

So besides serious injury, KOC is the only player who's gotten the axe due to just not being able to pick things up.

One thing I definitely agree with you on is that Belichick is probably not too afraid to get rid of a player if he just doesn't have what it takes, despite his draft round selection, so he's likely on the bubble.

Whatever their back stories were all three were 3rd round draft picks who were cut before the next year, a move another poster said would be unprecedented.

Hard to say, for sure. But I would call Edelman on this one. He's operating on a one year deal with no guaranteed money, he's at a position that the team just spent considerable draft resources at, and he's been injury plagued throughout his career. He's an excellent return man, when healthy. But the team also brought in Washington and also has Boyce to man that job with McCourty as a fallback option. If Boyce and Dobson are clicking in camp and the preseason, Jones doesn't completely suck, and the team makes another move at WR (Lloyd?), Edelman could become a casualty.

Unless Bequette is remarkably transformed from someone who looked as lost as a player can possibly look into someone who has an idea how football is played, I don't see how he possibly makes this roster. I don't care where he was drafted. In the five years I've been here, in my opinion no player has been given more of a free pass on this board than this guy.

He was the 91st pick in the 2012 draft who received minimal snaps in his rookie year. A player taken in that spot normally is considered more developmental than impactful.

Bequette did receive recognition for practice several times in 2012 which leads me to believe he has an interest in doing what it takes, he also seems to have the size and athletic ability so maybe it just took him longer to put it together.

Deaderick was a player who looked to have surpassed Love on the depth chart but now he is gone and Love is still here so how BB plays the players isn't always a indication of his long term plans for them. Francis could of been seen as a better fit for a 3-5 string role than Bequette in 2012 and could be easily cut this year.

Julian Edelman. You have to be able to stay on the field and Edelman can't. Much as i would like to see him fulfill the predictions of so many in this forum he has never been able to live up to them. Hopefully i am wrong and he has a career year but he is definitely on the bubble.

Come on. A third round pick who by all accounts was not injured has to do more than "receive recognition for practice." You're making excuses for him, plain and simple.

How on earth can you say that any player "looked lost" when they played less than 2 plays a game?

It is certainly fair to say that he had no impact on last year's team and was unable to get on the field but evaulating his play when he really didn't play is ridiculous.

As far as "free passes" go that award goes to Julian Edelman, who despite contributing very little is routinely touted as a really good player.

Whether bequette wins a spot on this team will come down to whatever progress or lack thereof he has made this offseason, he is definitely on the bubble and it is hard to see him sticking if he hasn't developed himself enough to win real playing time this season, e.g...20% of their defensive snaps or more. If Belichick doesn't see that happening then i think Bequette is gone in favor of someone who can get on the field that much.

I'm not making excuses brother I agree with the expecting more from him aspect I just think its early to give up on someone without at least seeing what we have in him.

???

Cutting Mankins could save $8M over the next 2 cap years (2013 and 2014). Yes we would lose $2M this year, but that it isn't a real concern. It makes little sense to spend $6M of new money if we don't think that Mankins is worth the money. Also, he could be designated a June 1 cut and we could have savings this year and next.

I certainly do NOT think that we would cut Mankins but $2M of 2013 dead money won't be the reason he's not cut. He won't be cut because the team thinks he's worth the $6M of new money we are paying him to play in 2013. In 2014, we will keep him if we think that he is worth the $7M of new money.

Make no mistake, if the patriots thought they could get close to the same production from Cannon/Green/McDonald, Mankins would be gone, probably for a draft choice.

You'd only cut a guy like Mankins to save money which because of how his contract is setup this year wouldn't happen so other than Brady Mankins is probably the second most unlikely to be cut.

Ummm what? Love was #2 DT behind wilfork all season...not sure what evidence you're using for that statement, but I'm quite confident it's wrong

He may be "making excuses" but you are actually making things up by claiming that he "looked lost" when he wasn't even playing. Not sure what you have against him but you certainly have an axe to grind. I'm guessing you hated the pick and wanted someone else because other than that I can't see what reason their is to hate on him. Plenty of 3rd round picks don't get much playing time early on and the question is whether or not they can develop into a player over their first few seasons. If they don't they are gone. Hopefully that isn't the case. Bequette is not a great athlete but he was a really good player in the best conference in college football, so I'm guessing the transition to the pro's wasn't that easy, if he can turn himself into a good pro he will have been worth the pick, if not, adios and people can ***** about the pick as they always do.

I have no clue what your talking? Mankins makes absolutely no sense to cut prior to the 2013 season. I was not speaking toward 2014 or future years.

Can you explain how cutting him now benefits us? Am I missing something? Please explain?

That's not true Mike Reiss article quotes,

"Deaderick has been playing more snaps than Love over the last six games as the top option next to Wilfork. … This looks like an area the team will address in the offseason to add more depth."

Gotta luv Patsfans' theorizing.

2012 "Welker being phased out for Edelman"

2013 "Edelman being phased out by sundry rookies"

Agree.

While Mankins isn't the elite guard he used to be, hes still a very good one, and hes a whole lot better than you could get for the $3M/yr that you're going to save cutting him. and you're not even saving $3M, because you have to sign someone to take his slot.

Seriously, the most likely result to cutting Mankins is drastically decreasing performance at the position for a $2M savings, or slightly decreasing performance at an increase cost of $1-2M.

There's almost no scenario where cutting Mankins helps the team in any way. Too much of his money right now is already sunk cost.

Benjamin Brady got the ban hammer? Mav, NEM, or one of the lesser knowns?

Strange. Last two visitors to his profile are myself and Ian.

I don't see anything in his posting history that looks bad.

That being said, one of the mods deleted a bunch of my posts and threatened to ban me because I didn't like his article. So who knows.

I don't know if it would be a shocker but I say Shane Vereen gets cut

I think that would definitely be a shocker. He's the 3rd down back right now, hes been fantastic in all of his playing opportunity, and the guys behind him on the depth chart are either UDFAs, or retreads (washington).

That, and they let the guy who was ahead of him on the depth chart walk for relatively cheap.
