DL Brandon Deaderick released

Is that the end of the New England Brandons? We lost Brandon Meriweather Brandon McGowan and now Brandon Deaderick. We still have Brandon Spikes, Brandon Boldin and rookie Brandon Ford. Brandon Jones looks doubtful to make the roster. Will this be enough Brandons to sustain us?

While it is a bit surprising that that cut him this early, seems to me that the coaching staff simply felt that the young DT/DE 3-4 type players on the roster were either simply better or had more upside...Cherrington, Love, Grissom, Forston and Armstead.

Fortson is an interesting player for me. High upside with a full season on PS. I wouldn't be shocked to see him make the squad and contribute.

I'm with Reiss on this -- Deaderick must have done something wrong we don't know about, whether it's looking terrible in workouts or something more specific.

Wasn't he suspended once for some unspecified rules violation?

yes, for being late to a few meetings after his rookie season.

I viewed Deaderick as a very solid 3-4 DE. As Fencer said, there is some part of the story that we don't know. Otherwise, he'd have been in camp through most of the preseason as insurance against injury

The alternative is that Belichick is giving Deaderick a better chance to make another team. Belichick has done this several times in the past.

So let me get this straight. The end result of 7 pages (so far) of Brandon Deadrick talks is that either BB hates him so much that he couldn't wait 'til TC to cut him, OR he likes him and wants to do him a favor. He has either been a productive role player who played more than a third of the defensive snaps adequately, OR a bottom of the roster marginal player forced to play more than he should have because of injuries. He was either a 7th round hit, or a 7th round miss

WOW, that cleared things up. I guess this is just another example of how little we actually know about what goes on inside those walls at Gillette. It would seem our job is speculate about the "why's", and pretend that what we are essentially guessing at is the absolute truth if anyone happens to disagree with our stated opinion.

BTW- add me to the many that were surprised by his release. My impression was that he had been a solid role player in the DL rotation, and a better than average run stopper, with limited rush capabilities.

I'd like to believe that his release is an indication that BB thinks he can easily upgrade his spot on the roster with others, though the timing seems strange. IMHO, if he isn't picked up on waivers by some team, then there probably is "something else" involved, because I think his, production, playing ability, size and age merits a spot on someone's 90 man roster, at least.

Wild speculation is a way of life on messageboards, Ken, and probably not even worth fighting. The reality that we have realized, especially from following the Pats, is that truth is often far more boring than the speculation.

In this case, of the two polarizing opinions you've noted here, one of them has shades of truth. To me, it's simple, and not so wild - at the end of the day, they'd rather have a young, hungry guy with higher upside and maybe a better work ethic getting run in practice rather than Deaderick. And if Deaderick wasn't willing to work harder to get more reps, then whatever time he did get would be wasted reps. That's why you cut a guy before camp.

We lost quite possibly the best slot receiver in NFL history, I'm sure I'll get over losing Deaderick.

If they like Forston, then he's behind Wilfork, Kelly, Armstead, Love, Forston making him the 6th DT on a team that carried 4 last year

Now only if we can find a player from Rutgers with Brandon as his first name

He would be a lock to sign here

Surprised, then realized I shouldn't have been. Players that make the cut here at best have a couple years to establish themselves and show continued development or else those on the bottom fifth or quartile gets turned over, replaced by newer candidates with more perceived upside potential. Even players like Edelperson who is versatile yet not accomplished and has established himself as a top PR get threatened because they have not demonstrated enough accomplishments. Only lack of any viable alternative at the position keeps the bottom rung guys on the roster after several seasons.

PS Thanks Brandon & good luck

He was claimed by the Jags today.

Hope he has a good year with the jags.

Interesting to see how fast Brace was picked up by Wash and now him by Jacks..

Around the league, players that come out of this system are viewed as if nothing else...

1) Well-coached
2) For the most part, professional and mature
3) Accustomed to winning

With that said, unless you are Greg Spires, Koppen or Jeremy Mincey, once you leave here after being cut, you won't really do much somewhere else.

Guys however much we're rooting for a JAG, you're always trying to improve over the marginal roster guys, and let's not kid ourselves... Deaderick was definitely that. I get it... you follow a late pick, root for him as he shows flashes of adequacy, root for him as he shows consistent adequacy with flashes of "pretty good..." you start to care. But it looks like BB et al. see a quicker path to greatness, what can you say....

I too hope he catches on elsewhere. He worked to make it as far as he did & ya gotta respect that.

You said this before he signed with the JAGS - what a great subconscious prediction!

Uh no, Spires won a SB ring after leaving and started for years. Koppen is with a contending playoff team. Mincey is different in that he was never a 53 member of the Pats never mind a starter.

I do agree with your point that ex-Pats are correctly perceived as experienced products of an excellent pro system.
