How many picks did Steve Belichick make?

...and then you can tell us all how you're engaged to marry Kate Upton.

That's impossible because I'm engaged to marry Kate Upton.

She told me on the internet. ;)

As far as the 2013 draft class goes, I think it was generally regarded as piss poor, with the exception of having some depth at certain positions (as always the case), and value in the middle rounds as opposed to the first round which was all over the place.

The front office traded down as we all knew they would, and ended up with 5 picks in the top 102. Those picks were used to address areas of need, which were already few and far between in my opinion--other than the glaring weakness of WR.

We got our mid round secondary pick(s) which were expected, we got our trade down to accumulate additional pick(s) which was expected, and we addressed the obvious area WR and coverage LB/front seven, which was expected. We also traded away a player, which was expected. I think the draft went according to many of our plans, without attempting to predict the specific player---which is a complete waste of time in my opinion due to not knowing what is going to happen ahead of time.

The zero Pro Bowl and NFL First Team players Bill Belichick drafted to the Patriots is an indictment on his ability to draft.

Joker, your signature rules. Fact.

Bill Belichick > internet nobodies.

The commentary about Schiano is laughable, as Schiano picked before BB did so there was a different landscape..

If BB picked where Schiano picked the results would probably have been different..

Sometimes it is better to check out the facts before listening to the source..

People criticizing and whining about this draft are interesting, and these conversations are probably better held next January..

What is the big deal with Belichick having his son as a scout?

Steve Belichick was probably one of the cones in the Three Cone Drill when he was three months old.

Steve Belichick has met and watched more professional football players up close than most people alive. He ought to have a pretty good eye for talent. Besides, it'll be much more fun on the road if his roomies from Rutgers are on the team bus.

I saw this and credit another poster. I agree with his assessment that Harmon would have survived easily into round five without losing the highly touted Scarlet Knight and he even knew it was too high.

Refresh my memory, how many picks did they have in the fifth round?
The standard Patriots B.S. line when they draft without sense is value pick

No, the value pick was the pick after where they had their choice of a ton of receivers everyone wanted to pick in round two, in round four.

You may be on to something, but I wouldn't go as far to say that BB Jr. had a direct influence, or otherwise, led the Rutgers selections. If TFB can't influence the front office to keep Welker, I highly doubt that BB Jr. is running our draft.

I like the idea of helping a school improve its recruitment drive, if a player thinks there is a possibility that Rutgers has some kind of affiliation or inside track with a NFL franchise on its athletes then they are going to start getting better athletes choose Rutgers over other schools.

OK, I'll play. Let's just say that your conspiracy theory holds some water. Look at it this way, what if BB's son actually is a "chip off the ol' block" and actually has a talent for sniffing out talent. Seriously, he has been raised in the culture much the same way BB was by his father and it could be suggested that his son has the talent as well and just has the luxury of actually being in the war room and having his opinion matter at such a young age. Now consider the fact that he went to school with these guys and has the inside scoop on their personality, character, and work ethic. Is that such a bad thing? I can sort of see where you're coming from in a fruitcake kinda way, but even if I did believe what you are suggesting(which I don't) I can't say that I am that against it when you consider who the kid is and the fact that his father has still done a "pretty" good job managing/coaching this team regardless of some of the draft busts BB has had. I still think his track record is "pretty" good at this point in time that I don't have a problem with the way the draft has gone.

Maybe, just maybe BB needs a young protege that happens to be his son to bounce ideas off of and isn't afraid to tell his father things that he needs to hear unlike a lot of young assistants that don't want to pi$$ off their boss.

Just my .02.

Why not let Steve have some input ? He can be as good a guesser as any of us I think.

No, the value pick was the pick after where they had their choice of a ton of receivers everyone wanted to pick in round two, in round four.

This has been largely ignored in the draft reviews. The receivers the Pats grabbed were generally placed much higher in the draft than where the team grabbed them.

Just my opinion, but there isn't a forum lowly enough for this thread.

Schiano just paid big dollars to Dashon Goldson and Darrelle Revis for his secondary (well the Bucs did), drafted Jonathan Banks at the top of the second round (and neither Ryan nor Harmon were expected to go that high), and had tons of other areas of need to fill. It wasn't like two picks before the Pats took Ryan, the Bucs took another CB instead. In the middle rounds, the Bucs drafted d-linemen which they needed more than another DB.

Saying Schiano passed on the Rutgers players because he didn't want them is a very superficial argument. He didn't have an opportunity to draft them when they would have been drafted and weren't a need at that point either.

He might not have taken them if there was a need and opportunity at the right draft position to draft them, but the Bucs were just not looking for secondary help after they invested a first (used to trade for Revis) and second rounder and huge contracts on three secondary players.

They (the Bucs) also drafted a safety in the first round last year too. A pretty high draft pick at that.

It's not how Belichick compares to internet nobodies; it's how he compares to other NFL GM's.

I actually like the Collins and Dobson picks. Boyce isn't a bad pick, and the Blount trade is a nice touch.

Really, drafting someone who has played football is a plus in the later rounds.

What pisses me off about this method of drafting is, why use this pick to draft what is basically a UFA? Why not use the pick to trade up or trade away for next year instead using it on taking a player you could have gotten anyway.
Why bother trading down for picks if your basically going to waste the pick on something you could have gotten in the dollar bin?

Yeah probably on the front bumper of her Mercedes....:)

well, i've been avoiding this discourse for a while. i've followed the pats drafts since we drafted hannah, sam bam and stingley in the first rd of '73. loved the first two picks but didn't know stingley that well at the time. i've never been a big fan of belicheck's drafts. i remember eric turner at 2, tommy vardell at 9 and craig powell at 30 ,or so, while in cleveland. nothing great. he's definitely improved upon those days. what i think people might be missing now is that because he's the coach/major domo/pseudo gm is that the picks may not be up to mel kiper's snuff but these are the guys bb wants to coach.i think it just boils down to that.
