...week # 6 against the New Orleans Saints?
Brady is above records of the type a Peyton Manning fan would extoll his guy for (although it's nice to compared playoff W-L records and indoor/outdoor QB Rating/Rate+ stats).
Brady is in the hunt for another SB ring, that's the record we should all really care about.
Wow! I have to tip my cap to the NFL; that's some good scheduling, right there...
Also, in regards to the thread's title; the word you are looking for is "could." "Just noticed, Brady *could* break Brees record..." Yeah, let's not jinx it. Losing Welker is bad enough; don't need bad luck on top of it.
I long for the "blue collar, lunchpail" Patriots of the early 2000s. In those days Pats fans excoriated Colts fans for their incessant obsession with Peyton's stats vs Brady's Championship wins. But starting with that nightmare 2007 stats focused season, a large segment of the Patriots fan base became obsessed with individual statistics, like MLB fans, totally missing the point.
Stats are for losers. I want to a healthy team and to win in Feb and that's all I care about...................But it would be cool for TFB to get it!
Brady is also the most competitive guy in all of football. Of course, the end game is going to be raising the Lombardi trophy for every player in the NFL. But, being the competitive guy that we all know he is, you don't think that Brady would be excited about breaking that record?
I agree with you (and Belichick, who did say it) that, in general, "Stats are for losers."
Johnny U's record, though, was a big deal to break. Any record that stands for over half a century in any sport, let alone a QB record in a QB-obsessed league, is meaningful.
Brees deserved all the praise he got for breaking it. If Brady is fortunate enough to throw a TD in each of the next seven games, he will deserve all the praise he gets as well. But, seven games is an eternity in the NFL...which is why this record is such a big deal.
Unitas's record stands well over Brees or any other QB of this era that "breaks" it in the sense of the context they played in.
In Unitas's time (say 1965, the first year I saw a game), the 3rd best TD total by a QB was 23, and the 3rd best yards gained/yr was 2300. Compare that to 41 and 5000 yards in 2011. Or of the top 37 QB Rating QB's all time, only two retired before 1994 - or 9 of the top 12 are still active.
Let's not do this.
Let's not turn TB's pursuit of the "consecutive games started with a TD pass" record into a circus like the Saints and Drew Brees did last year. We can't criticize the Saints and Brees for doing that and then turn around and do it ourselves.
Plus. It's way bad Karma to say things like "...will break..." the record. Is that "just superstition?" You betcha!
Sure... just not publicly...
