CB's in round 3 or later

who does everyone like and what rounds should we pencil them in for? For the purpose of this excercise we assume Milliner, Rhodes, Banks, Trufant, Jamar Taylor and Amerson have already been taken...

I'm actually going back and looking at CBs right now. My favorite so far is Darius Slay from Mississippi State. Good height/weight/speed combination, plays mostly man coverage (both press and off) and seems like a really solid guy with some upside. From the guys I've looked at so far I think he would be able to contribute right away the most because of his fit in the system and his overall skill set. I also think he has the talent to get better with a nice upside. I would be very happy with him in the 3rd round.

Ht/Wt/Sp probably means Slay goes earlier than the 3rd. Same thing will be true I think for someone like Sanders Commings. We all know the NFL is a copycat league, and teams will be trying to replicate Seattle's big corners.

For the late 3rd and beyond, we're probably looking at someone like Will Shields or Terry Hawthorne. Developmental corners, solid depth, questionable future starters.

I think there is a decent chance Slay will still be around in the early/mid 3rd because this is quite a deep draft at CB. I think someone like Amerson is the guy that will be really over-drafted because of height/weight/speed. If we trade back from 29 for a mid 2nd and mid 3rd I think we could probably get him (likely somewhere in the 70's).

The other guy I really like so far is Robert Alford from Southeastern Louisiana. I just love the way he plays the game. He is tough, physical, plays with an attitude and sheds blocks to make a tackle better than anyone else in this draft. I haven't seen enough of him to judge his cover skills, but they seem good from scouting reports. If we could somehow get a combination of Slay's physical tools and Alford's attitude and toughness then I think we would have an amazing CB. Right now its hard for me to chose between the two.

With some of the other guys, I wasn't impressed with Jordan Poyer. I don't think he is a cover corner and I don't see the fit in the system. I'm not saying he won't be a good NFL CB, I just don't think its going to be in a physical man coverage system. The other guy I looked at was Jamar Taylor and the talent is evident. I think he could be a high 2nd rounder on some teams boards, I just don't think its us. Like Poyer I think he is probably suited for a different system, especially one where he can play the ball in front of him. I just don't know if he is a turn and run type guy. I'm also concerned about the level of competition with him. A lot of the time I saw him making plays was against weak QB play or receiver mistakes. That's not really a knock against him because he can only play whats in front of him, but I think the level of competition does need to be taken into consideration when looking at his film. I think he is going to be a very good NFL CB, I just think system wise there are better fits.

Some potential Day 2 CB's that stood out to me, ranking them based upon where they are projected to be drafted...

1. Robert Alford, Southern Louisiana: Pretty good ball skills, nice wingspan, and good speed.

2. Dwayne Gratz, UCONN: Stronger CB that looks to be able to excel in the press. If he gets his hands on a WR, it's going to be hard for that receiver to gain separation.

3. Tyrann Matheiu, LSU: Slower 40 time than hoped for, but he's physical and would be an animal in the "star" role.

4. Leon McFadden, San Diego State: Good cover corner that is better in the press as well. Also would make for a good nickel corner.

5. Terry Hawthorne, Illinois: Big, tall, physical, and speedy corner that saw his stock drop due to a very bad concussion. But, if he falls, he could be a steal.

Johnny Adams of Michigan State came into the season pegged as a first-rounder.

After a disappointing season, some of which can be blamed on the play of his teammate Darqueze Dennard, the other starting CB who looks lights-out (ranked as the third best CB for next year's draft on nfldraftscout.com)--so he was actually targeted--his stock has plummeted.

A little undersized but with legit NFL speed. He's a three-year starter. Definitely great value in the fifth round--if we can get a pick then.

Also, I love a player whose lack of speed will cost him dearly, but he's got Rodney Harrison-like NFL IQ and his physical, Iowa's Micah Hyde. I'd move him to safety.

Don't now if DJ Hayden will fall to 3rd round or later because teams fears about his terrible injury, but in that case, I will blindly pick him, kid can be down the road the best CB of this draft.

I like Hayden but I honestly think he is being overrated because of his story. I think 3rd round is probably right for him, but there is talk of him going late 1st/early 2nd which I don't really see. Good player, I just don't think he is that good.

I won't answer the question because I think our top pick (wherever it ends up being) will be a CB not a round 3 type. Talib is only signed for one year, we have no depth - unless Ras I can stay healthy and play like he looked before the injuries - and CB is a position where you can play, and get value, out of non starters. Not like OL where the backups are backups, a "backup" CB will still play in nickel and dime. Throw in the fact that there's a good group of late #1 to mid #2 CB and that's what I expect with the only exception being if there's a DL Bill loves still there.

Two words: Leon and Mcfadden. No better CB outside the first than him.

Logan Ryan- my personal favorite. just solid. not the fastest but i can live with that.

Will Davis- a little finesse but feisty. Doesn't fear the deep ball. Deceptively quick.

David Amerson- I think he would be a bust on many teams but not ours. He's big and the way he way he explodes to intercept short routes would work with the way we play bend but don't break. I suspect BB might even like this guy in the first.

He's been in most of my mocks recently. Feisty guy against the run and much better in press than he is in off and zone.

Was worked out personally by BB apparently.

I've liked what I have seen out of Leon McFadden of San Diego State. Good size, solid enough speed, and productive with good bloodlines (father played in the MLB).

His strength is the ability to make plays on the ball in the air, which is something the Patriots need.

A little inconsistent but most CB prospects aren't known for their consistency in the mid rounds or later.

Two UDFAs could be the following:

Mitchell White out of Michigan St. and Marcus Cooper out of Rutgers.

Both have height (5'11 1/8 and 6'2 1/8"). Both have straight line speed. White has good 3-cone and excellent short shuttle numbers. Cooper has excellent short shuttle numbers. BB knows coaches who have coached/played against both players so he should be able to get a good read.

Really like Amerson as a replacement for the oft injured and disappointing Dowling. I wouldn't take him in the first but if he's there in the second I'd grab him.
