2013 Patriots Draft Contact List

Further to this point and thinking from the perspective of our first and second round picks from previous years:

The point is this: in the last three years, the Patriots have had contacts with most of the immediate rivals for players we've subsequently drafted with the exception of Hightower. So far, the only DT's we've been linked to are UDFA types. So, unless there's someone specific, the recent track record suggests not getting up your hopes for a DT.

Looks like this is the reason

Source: #Patriots and former #Raiders DT Tommy Kelly agree to a two-year deal, I'm told. Great fit.

Well - with the Kelly signing, that should end the debate about defensive tackles considering the depth chart: Wilfork, Love, Armstead, Kelly, Forston, Deadrick et al.

Things are shaping up nicely....

The track record of Boise State players in the NFL isn't that great. The most hopeful of all BSU players so far is Billy Winn (DT, Cleveland Browns) and he was a 6th round pick. The rest have all been kind of meh.

With Jordan being a fairly unique NFL prospect and the Bills, Jets and Dolphins all picking in the top 12, I suspect it's probably nothing more than a little (future) opposition research.

We might have to trade up a lot for dion Jordan. Much speculation on twitter right now originating from a source supposedly that the Chiefs are going to pick Dion Jordan with the #1 pick.

If true, can I be the first to congratulate Merrill Hoge's Tie Knot and Mayoclinic (both sadly absent) who were very high on Jordan from the start.

I kind of like what Doug Martin, Quintin Mikell, and Ryan Clady have done so far....

Good call on Clady, I forgot about him. Martin, we'll see. He had some amazing games last year but he also had some doozies.

Yeah, as borisman said, Patriots are tough and don't joke around/play around. Prospects in the past have commented about how strenuous the workouts are with New England how long/how enduring the interviews can be as well.

It's clear that New England knows what they are after well before they even bring a prospect in and refuse to stop digging at the cursory top level that other teams may stop at.

Some reporter tweeted that the visit went fine. What does it mean ? Who the hell knows - it's The Honey Badger.

From Louisana Tech's rivals site (can't link). Not too surprising considering he could go late first or early second round.

"[Quinton] Patton has had several workouts with the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers already and visited with the Tennessee Titans, St. Louis Rams, Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers. He will travel soon to meet with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots."

Also RB Ray Holley - "Today (4/10), Holley has a workout with the New England Patriots at his Junior College, Orange Coast Community College."

From Rob Lang blog in CBSsports.com web (can`t link), in Azusa-Pacific Pro Day attended a defensive back that go from JUCO to Cincinatti to Nevada (dismissed for DUI):

"Former Nevada cornerback Malik James also turned heads at the workout. The transfer from Cincinnati was unofficially clocked at 4.35-seconds at 5-11 (5/8), 189-pounds, according to multiple sources. The New England Patriots, who had at least two representatives on hand and ran James' workout, seemed especially interested."

Has had off-field troubles and finally landed in a small school (Langston University). A probable interesting UDFA guy

Source: Patriots OC Josh McDaniels was at Rutgers today meeting with WR Mark Harrison.

There's a lot of 2+2=4 there. Mid round WR (check), tall WR (check), Josh McDaniels (check), Rutgers (check), fits the Patriots well in terms of combine performance (check).`

And the first three catches on the below video (check!!!!!)

Mark Harrison vs Louisville,Arkansas, Cincinnati 2012 - YouTube

Edit: Apparently they were working out a second unnamed Rutgers prospect as well. Logic says Logan Ryan, but considering the number of RB's they've looked at, Jawan Jamison wouldn't surprise me. Nor would Khaseem Greene.

Edit: Bearing in mind the above, the state of the roster and having re-watched some of Harrison's video, I'm finding it hard to come up with a reason for him not to be the pick. One of the things that impresses me the most is his willingness to turn himself into DB on bad throws. I'm not sure we'll be taking a WR high this year now with Amendola and presumably Sanders on the roster so Harrison looks to be a great fit as a mid rounder. Will probably be in my final mock.

Potential UDFA Woodhead replacement?

Sam McGuffie (RB/WR, Rice) had a monster regional combine:

4.28 40
41.5" Vert
11.2 Broad
3.8 Shuttle

It's not like he's a midget either at 5-10, 198.

Mentioned him a while ago. Apparently we've had him in for a workout. With those numbers, an ideal UDFA fit I'd say (also had a 6.73 3-cone at his pro-day):

Sam McGuffie has had a personal workout with the Patriots. Now THAT would be an interesting fit.

Also:

Patriots have privately worked out Penn St. OT Mike Farrell. 6 foot 6, 303, RT developmental guy.

I actually really like Harrison as a Aaron Hernandez like receiving TE. I don't think he has the athleticism to consistently get separation against quality CBs on the outside, but lined up at TE I think he could be really productive. He is too big and powerful for smaller nickel CBs, but too fast and too athletic for LBers to cover him. At 6'3' 235lbs I think he is ideal as a joker TE.
