There are several players that the team might consider extending: Wilfork, McCourty, Wendell and Ninkovich sort of stand out in this regard.

We just re-signed Ninko to a 1 yr deal. Don't get why 30 days later we'd extend him.

I think adding Spikes to that list would be smart

Musta missed this, when's Ninko becoming a free agent then? I assume this was added to his current deal?

How much do people here think that Spikes should get? About 5-6m per year?

Would not extend Spikes. Like his play but slow ILBs abound in the draft at far lesser cap hits. ILB position cap $ goes to Mayo. Use any extension cap $ for Wilfie first, then McCourtney. It's gone by then.

McCourty is the best bet to get extended. If Mayo is the son that BB always wanted, McCourty is at least the nephew.

As for Spikes, I'm not sure he'll be around past his rookie contract. He's great against the run, and has the kind of physical presence you love to have on your defense, but he's not a 3 down LB, and IIRC he isn't much of a force on special teams. How much effort are the Pats going to make to resign a one dimensional LB even if he's very good AT that one dimension.

I'm sure they'll make him an offer, but they aren't going to offer to make him a rich (relatively)man. A couple of Million/yr would be the MAXIMUM I think he'll be offered....and I don't think that's enough to keep him. But IMHO at decent run stuffing ILB is one of the more common NFL commodities. So while I'd love to keep him, I'm not worrying about replacing him either.

This is probably a discussion for another day, but I would be surprised if Spikes gets an extension. He's a heck of a physical player, but he's a 3-4 SILB playing on a 4-3 team. I can't see the Patriots valuing him as much as he values himself and other teams which run a 3-4 and could use a run-stopping ILB might value him.

Regarding Spikes. If we could keep him for 3m a year so sure. But he is terrible against the pass. I think that it would be much better to draft a Linebacker early in the draft who can cover when Spikes rookie contract is done. The NFL is a passing league now and paying much for a player who can't cover the pass is just not worth it.

I would love for McCourty to get a contract extension if he stays at safety. I think that he has a lot of problem playing cb. But when he can sit in his zone always face the quarterback he does a very good job and gets picks as a result of it.

Extend Solder while the tackle market is so low. Lots of good young tackles have come out in the last few years, and some will see big deals long before solder. Extend him the way they extend Gronk--with 2 years left. The market for tackles, given Long and Vollmer's deals, is soft.

Under the CBA, we need to wait until this season ends.

Can't anymore. The Gronk/Hernandez draft class is the last class that could have their contracts redone after two years. Solder's class and everybody after that have to wait until after three years.

1) Please give us a link to any Ninko extension or new contract signed "30 days ago"

2) If Ninkovich is a free agent in 2014, it makes sense to consider an extension this year. At very least, he is a fine situational player who can start at LB or DE as needed.

FA next year

Ah, I see. Thanks guys.

Wonder why they put that into the CBA. Why would they restrict teams and players from looking after their own interests?

You are confusing Rob Ninkovich with Niko Koutouvides.

Koutouvides just re-signed

Last time Ninkovich signed a deal was Sept 2011. 2 year extension thru 2013

No, I misread or mis-remembered the Contract for Ninko thread

This is part of reducing the costs of rookies. This way, the savings are locked in for the first 2 years of rookie contracts.

Watching Spikes walk at/as he's entering his prime would be a tough pill to swallow.

Suck it up. :)

Seriously, I expect us to be starting Ninkovich, Mayo and Hightower next year at LB.
