Patriots release Brandon Lloyd

Brandon Lloyd was not designated a June 1 release which means that his dead money hit of $2 million hits the 2013 Patriots cap.

So the team has an option in designating the release. This would indicate to me a reluctance to push cap hits forward. This could imply they're less likely to restructure the Mankins', etc. unless one of the rumored fantasy trades (color me deeply skeptical) occurs with a need for 2013 cap expansion.

Any rumors floating around about who Lloyd is talking to?

This only freed up 2.5 mill? May as well have kept him. I think this move will come back to bite them. Hopefully I'm wrong. A lot of new guys coming in would have been nice to have a proven wide out.

I'm really hoping Lloyd has no suitors and he winds up here for a vet minimum. At least he provides depth...since everybody seems to get injured on this team at one point or another.:bricks:

With Amendola, Gronk, Hernandez being the primary receiving options in the short passing game and hopefully Vereen (and Ridley...whose development in this area would make the offense deadly) seeing more balls thrown his way, any "downgrade" from Lloyd to Sanders, Jones or whoever else they sign is offset by any ability of those guys to force a safety to stay deep and open up things underneath...and catch the occasional homerun ball.

Unlike 2009 where Moss' one-dimensional go-route was a hindrance since the *only* other viable receiving option was Wekler, the current offense has so many weapons that a true burner would really complement the whole offensive package. If that means losing Lloyd, then on the balance it's a net positive.

Regards,
Chris

That's the point. We're not trying to be the Moss offense again. Our TE centric, run capable offense just needs someone who can force enemy safeties to play deep or pay the penalty now and again. Not looking for huge #s from the guy but looking for a threat that DCs can ignore only with dire consequences. That's one reason that I'd be OK with even BB trying to take such a guy in the 2nd round assuming we don't get Sanders for a 3rd. A fast rook will not need to learn the entire offense.

Lloyd better have been borderline uncontrollable if you can't keep 900+ yards of production around for $2.5M more. Especially with the entire position a big question mark right now. But then the fact that they tried working out a restructured deal and couldn't is concerning since you wouldn't normally do that if attitude was the problem vs. paying up. This is like when they didn't pay Gaffney roughly $2M per in 2009 and look at the ****storm our recieving situation was after Moss/Welker that season. $2.5M is nothing.

Lloyd numbers are so hyped condsidering he had almost 200 of those yards in one game. There were games when he was none-existant considering he was healthy all year with his flag football style of playing...tag you're it Lloyd. I am certain that a decent Rookie could have posted Lloyd's numbers that is if McDaniels is buying the groceries there. I think McDaniels might have an eye for young WR's he seems to have a good track record.

Lloyd had the almost 200 yds against a SB team and top defense, SF.

fair is fair.

And Amendola would have had 180 yards against them had it not been for one of the rams tackle having an illegal formation called against him.

I rest my case regarding my hate for Lloyd lol.:D

Omg you actually went there; you're kidding right? McDaniels' groceries last year included your man Lloyd, Greg Salas, and possibly Hooman, Fells, and Ebert. The man is a stellar evaluator I tell you. Moving up in the first round to draft the arena league-caliber Tebow was also a stroke of genius.

If McDaniels is buying the groceries, then God help this team.

Oh C'mon JMarr I agree that the Tebow pick was a gaff. But in our case McDaniels just came back and last year was like a Rookie year one for him...give peace chance.

Last time I checked, when Tebow was a starter, he won a few football games.

McDaniels' drafts in Denver were, on balance, pretty good, with two proven NFL WR talents in Decker and Thomas.

I know it wasn't you that suggested it, but I just don't think it is fair to criticize player by turning a near 200-yd performance into some sort of negative. FWIW, Lloyd's four best performances this year (in terms of yardage) were: SF, Baltimore, Houston and Seattle. If those performances were all against the weak sisters of the league, I'm sure that would have been brought up. One could have argued that he came up biggest in big games. Half empty vs. half full.

I'm not suggesting he was some sort of stud, just think he should be given his due. The guy wasn't terrible.

I was also kind of making a point that Amendola isn't has bad as some Pats fan tend to think.

Another angle that could be examined is how much those good defensive teams took away our better options, thus being okay with taking their chances one on one with Llyod?

It could be argued that if we had a better candidate in his spot this year, they may not be able to just double someone else and put their best CB/S on one of our TE's, because they won't be able to get away with going one on one with Llyod's replacement.

In other words, I agree with you that it's not Llyod's production that necessarily was the problem, it was his production combined with the 5 million dollar cap hit that they didn't like. He'd still be here if he had agreed to a lesser pay. Upgrading the position (if we can successfully do that) will open up more possibilities to stretch the field AND take advantage of more underneath/middle routes for Amendola, Hernandez, and Gronkowski.

All in all, I would honestly still prefer if he were part of the roster, and I'd really like to see him return on a lesser salary. I don't think that is going to be the case however, even if the market dictates a lack of interest from other teams I think that Llyod will still move on.

What do you know...0 market for lloyd..he will be back
