It has nothing to do with standing or hand down it's about gap assignments.

Deaderick played the 3 or 5 gap, Wilfork played the 0 gap and jones played the 5 gap.

Have you read the book "smart football" Because that is where I think you got that from. In the last chapter the author talks about the Patriots playing a 4-3 personell with 3-4 assignements. That is how we played a couple of years ago. But last year we had a nose in the A gap over the guard and a DT over the outside of the guard in 3 tech in the B gap.

No it isnt. We do not play a man over the C. We do not align in a 34. There really isnt a debate.

Ok Andy we will agree to disagree. But if you could show me a diagram I'd appreciate it.

Haven't read it I just base it on my view of what is happening on the field. I also recall Chandler Jones saying he wanted to get stronger in the offseason to be a better 2 gap run stopper and that is 3-4 assignment.

The Pats played a slightly modified 4-3 Under in 2011 up until about when Carter got hurt. Then they went back to Belichick's old 2-gap 3-4.

Last year, I believe they rarely put a DT over the center. They really liked putting a DT over each of the guards and doing what you could really basically call a 2-5 defense with two 3-4 NTs, 0 3-4 DEs, 2 3-4 OLBs, and 3 3-4 ILBs.

The biggest difference between the 4-3 Under in 2011 and the more "normal" 4-3 in 2012 is that they had 5 guys on the line in 2011 and only four guys in 2012.

How does a finding a diagram and claiming its our defense have anything to do with what our defense was?
We played a 4-3 probably 80-90% of the time we played base, a 34 the rest of the time we played base and nickel/dime more often than either.

Or 2 43DE, 2 43 DT, 2 43 OLB and a MLB..........

2 gap has nothing to do with 34 or 43. Its easy to confuse because historically most of the 2gap philosophy teams played 34.
The 2 gap philosophy says you have a player responsible for the gaps on either side of each front 7 offensive player (with the 7th being the 2nd TE, lead FB, pulling G or whoever shows). Whether that is done from a 34 or a 43 is irrelevant.
A 2gap player must typically engage his blocker in order to shed him when he reads which hole the RB goes to. Some LBs (Seau was one) will handle 2 gap by avoiding the blocker and flattening out to control the whole area, or read prior to engaging but its rare. This is why we have bigger LBs that most teams because they must take on OL and control the gap on either side.

This is definitely worth pointing out. In 2011 Ninkovich at SLB was always on the LOS, despite technically playing linebacker. This past year, Hightower was off the line a lot.

As for the guy who wanted a diagram earlier...

The 2011 defense started out as something like this. 43 under with some wrinkles thrown in.

Just asked you if you had one because I would like to see it for my own education.. You don't need to be so defensive Andy.

I

Thank you this was a very informative post.

I think Patricia gains a little more authority over the defense each year but it is still Belichick's and will be until they play great football for an extended period. Patricia does most of the work putting the defenses in and calling plays for them but Belichick is dictating game plans and their overall approach both in terms of personal and gameplanning.

Furthermore, Patricia is really just doing all the legwork to free up Bill - he's not instituting anything of his own.

She Leaves alot to be desired or as some would put it Patricia is no treat.:nono:
