Broncos fumble: Forced to release Dumervil

Donks Elway trying to cheat again like they did with the salary cap to win their SBs.

Wasn't Broncos fault was Dummervils agent who didn't fax over signed deal by 4pm et.

Haha, so even if they get him back for the agreed $8M, whatever they were gonna save this year from the paycut is all but wiped out. Nice!

Karma.

Isn't that what everyone says when something goes against the Pats?

I dunno if I'd call $3.5M a 'huge' hit though.

It's kind of huge because it is basically the amount he agreed to cut. And if it wasn't a big of a hit they would have just released him and re-signed him to a new deal.

"Yyyyyeah.... we're gonna need you to take another 4 million off. If you could just come down another 4 million, that would be terrifficccc"

Here's a chance for the Patriots to wound their number 1 AFC competition.

Ray, Best Post of the New Year

Good times! Good Times!

Thanks, that situation immediately made me think of something. Fortunately, still available on the intraweb. Good old Upton lived in my hometown, I saw him at the convenience store. That was a particularly sad era for the Pats, pre Fairbanks and after the great Clive Rush.

Unreal. RT @greggrosenthal Dumervil release creates $4.87 million in dead money according to @MaseDenver. Yikes.

Broncos should have kept hitting redial.

Anyone know how this will affect their cap?

Not sure, but even if they resign him, his dead money will be accelarated to this year unless they decide to make him a June 1st cut where it will be spread over this year and next, but his 2013 cap number will stand until June 1st which means they cannot afford to re-sign him or sign a guy like Freeney. Could be a huge mess for them.

Ouchie... Sounds like something the Jets would do.

That's who we were BK (before Kraft), it is why many of us are old timers are homers who don't whine about the great situation we have now, we remember what used to be. ;)

Probably a dumb question but this "dead money" goes somewhere, I am assuming to Dumervil? Can't he just sign for a 2013 at $5MM and its the same difference as restructuring at $8MM?

My guess is the Broncos will do everything to re-sign Dumervil, but Dumervil has just gotten some leverage.

Hahaha, that's actually hilarious, if true. If they re-sign him tomorrow for the same money, they'll pay more than if they'd just let him have his original salary.

They took Welker, so it would only make sense for us to bend John right back over.

I'd love this, but we don't even need to sign him. They're already taking a nearly 5m cap hit because of this debacle without the guy even playing for them. That's going to hurt them more than enough.

...anyways, sign this beast!

While this is a major screw up, it's not that bad. If the Broncos had simply cut him yesterday, it's the same net result, and nobody would have thought it a significant issue. I wonder if maybe the Broncos had second thoughts and "accidentally" missed the deadline. What's up with NFL and fax machines, anyway? Nobody uses fax any more.

I don't know if I'm taking too much glee in all this. The Broncos just became a player in the DE market with lots of money freed up.

In any event, here are the numbers as I understand them:

Dead money cap hit: $4.869m.

Cap hit if they hadn't restructured and he played under his contract: $13.623m.

Cap hit if the reported restructure had gone through: $9.123m.

So, the Broncos just opened up $8.754 million in cap space by releasing him. They also have $4.254 million more in cap room than they would have had if he had restructured.

I doubt 4.254 million is going to be enough to resign Dumervil, but it's certainly a lot of money. And, the bottom line is that by releasing him, the Broncos have just opened up nearly $9 million in cap space to become a free agent player. Not exactly worth celebrating over.
