While this is a major screw up, it's not that bad. If the Broncos had simply cut him yesterday, it's the same net result, and nobody would have thought it a significant issue. I wonder if maybe the Broncos had second thoughts and "accidentally" missed the deadline. What's up with NFL and fax machines, anyway? Nobody uses fax any more.
I don't know if I'm taking too much glee in all this. The Broncos just became a player in the DE market with lots of money freed up.
In any event, here are the numbers as I understand them:
Dead money cap hit: $4.869m.
Cap hit if they hadn't restructured and he played under his contract: $13.623m.
Cap hit if the reported restructure had gone through: $9.123m.
So, the Broncos just opened up $8.754 million in cap space by releasing him. They also have $4.254 million more in cap room than they would have had if he had restructured.
I doubt 4.254 million is going to be enough to resign Dumervil, but it's certainly a lot of money. And, the bottom line is that by releasing him, the Broncos have just opened up nearly $9 million in cap space to become a free agent player. Not exactly worth celebrating over.
