A 3 TE offense will not be effective.

If you were talking about 1980's type TEs, I'd agree with you. However, this isn't the 80's and the TEs and significantly more athletic. Heck, as many people point out, Hernandez is basically a WR with his ability.

Please show me a defense that can cover a healthy Gronkowski, Hernandez, and Ballard being on the field at the same time.

Let me tell you what I see in that situation. I see the opposing team having nightmares because there are very few people who can cover Gronkowski, whether they are a CB, LB or S. Hernandez can't be covered by a LB. Ballard is another one that can't be covered by a LB.

A CB may be able to stay with Hernandez, but I can't think of any that can out-muscle him for the ball.

You put a RB like Vereen on the field who can come out of the backfield to catch a pass and a WR on the field like Lloyd or Amendola and that's a match-up nightmare for opposing teams.

Nope. I, among others, trusted Rapoport's math in the excitement (or intense lack thereof for some) following the Amendola signing. After that adrenaline wore off, we all realized how wrong he was.

I don't know which is worse, Rapoport screwing up his math on a tweet with a #Math hashtag, or me, two months from receiving a math degree, not immediately noticing his error

That's probably WHY you didn't notice it. . . . learning abstract math destroys your ability to do simple arithmetic.

It will be interesting to see Josh try to make a Ballard, Gronk and Hernandez version of a three TE set work with Brady throwing the rock and a couple of pass catching backs out there with them. I don't think we've ever seen a team with this much pass catching skill at TE in the NFL.

What would an opponent do if the Pats went with a goal line formation at the 50 on 2nd and 7, with the three tight ends lined up tight and Woodhead and Vereen in the backfield with Brady?

I'm kind of in favor of having wide receivers at times. We don't even know what Ballard is going to look like coming off a full year with an ACL and playing in a new system. For the love of all that is Belichick, please draft a guy who can make some plays on the outside and stretch the defense even a tiny bit. I know, I'm asking too much.

You have got to be kidding me. $31 MILLION? Is this guy even worth that kind of money?

NFL contracts arent guaranteed. The only real number is the signing bonus.

I bet the first 2 years of salary are peanuts so if the Pats decide to cut Almendola after a couple of years theyre only on the hook for approximately 11 million.

It will not be effective. The defense that could stop it is every one in the NFL.

You're missing the point though. It wouldn't just be a 3 TE offense, it would be a 3 TE offense run by New England, the place where backup QBs are worth a 1st and 2nd round draft choice.

Here's the deal....Amendola has just about as much talent as Wes Welker. He can really exploit the seams/slot and is faster than Wes. Here's the uh-oh: He has missed 20 games out of his last 32. The guy is no where near as TOUGH as Welker. He is constantly getting injured. This tells me there must be an escape clause in that 5 year contract as I will be amazed if he can last 1 year never mind 5. Make no mistake though....IF the guy can stay healthy he will make a big impact here.....Best of luck to him...am pulling for the guy!

There is only one way that the Patriots are a better team this year without Wes and thats if Welker's "disdain" for the Patriots or his attitude (warranted or unwarranted) had gotten to the point that it outweighed the positives.

Thats one really big "if" in my humble opinion.

I know several people disagree with those of us that feel this had to be personal somehow. I assume the "its not personal" crowd feel it was simply good (or cutthroat) business sense -but at 6 million a year how was it not good business to keep Welker on the payroll?

Unless Welker was insisting on a firm No Trade clause, the "smart/cutthroat" thing to do would have been to sign him and trade him later in the season for actual compensation (though my definition of "smart" can admittedly be very subjective).

I am sorry this is a really bad post. Who gives a crap about his attitude. If Welker was hurt on the first play of preseason, and out for the season, the Pats are better off without him. If Welker is hurt in the second game of the regular season, and out for the season, the Pats are better off without him. If Welker doesn't perform up to the level of a $6 million dollar a year player, the Pats are better off without him. If DA outperforms WW for maybe $2mill a year less the Pats are better off without him. Should I go on, I hate hyperbola, and this crap saying there is no way the Pats are better off without him is incredibly stupid. I hate to see WW go, and I am not sure if they made the correct decision but this stuff has to stop.

Hello josh McDaniel probably had a bigger hand in this then known!

In all due respect he has missed 20 games out of his last 32.....I don't care whether they are freak injuries or "regular" injuries....that is alot of missed games!! I agree with you on his talent though....IF he can stay healthy...he can be very explosive and productive here...I'm going to be like Bob Kraft and keep my fingers crossed...Except mine will be crossed in hoping he will succeed here.;)

UOTE=English Patriot;3396869]Please, please, please remember Amendola is not 'injury prone'. I detest that phrase with a passion. He did not have non stop hamstring injuries, he had freak clavicle and heel injuries. They heal fully and you're back 100%.

Honestly if you don't watch Rams games, this guy is better than Wes and can actually go DEEP outside of the slot if he's playing at top level.

Well done Pats, great deal.[/QUOTE]

Just a note on Amandola's $10MM "guaranteed" money. I'll be skeptical until all the details come out, because often in the NFL "guaranteed money" isn't always guaranteed.

For example money might be guaranteed for skill but not for injury, and visa versa. The fact that the Pats only guarateed a third of the contract shows that the Pats are not looking to take a big risk with this kid. The fact that even the $10MM guaranteed money might not be FULLY guaranteed (ie a signing bonus) would tell even more. Can't wait to find out.

Amendola has never missed a game as a New England Patriot.

Yes, because the one catch for 5 yards Amendola got the season he played for McDaniels really turned his head. It was one amazing 5 yard catch.

You do realize Amendola missed nearly the entire season McDaniels was the OC of the Rams.

McDaniels has now brought in 5 ex Rams / Broncos
Amendola isn't the only Ram who barely played who he still brought over

Yea so bb did not ask if JM if da was a suitable replacement they only been chasing him for a couple of years?

+1

Very few people have the God given talent to play in the NFL. Even fewer people within the NFL have the God given durability to do so relatively injury free in a such a notoriously brusing position.

Unreal that some are dismissing Welker's durabilty as a non factor in comparison to China Doll Amendola.

I'm sure you would post tons of articles which I would only ignore. Granted those articles would prove YOU wrong.

Why won't you man up and after spending all day yesterday saying McDaniels picked Chad Jackson, admit you are wrong when several posters provided proof that you were 100% wrong?

Why won't you acknowledge DaBruinz who pointed out Daniel Fells never played for McDaniels prior to him coming to the Pats? He was in St. Louis before McDaniels got there and Denver after McDaniels left.

Salas and Hoomanwhatever were low risk players and not big deals either way. Salas might have turned out to be a good acquisition if the Pats didn't lose him trying to move him to the practice squad.

If you are just going to push your agenda against McDaniels, at least get your facts straight.

32 year old wr who has touched the ball over 100 times for each of the last 5 years. Sounds like Welker is on the fast track to being all done.

Damn right. Welker would get absolutely destroyed on some plays but get up and keep playing. That guy missed only 1.5 games after tearing his ACL. He is a stud. If Amendola plays 10 games this year, I will be surprised.

I am sure McDaniels gave some input, but I think the Pats would have chased Amendola no matter if McDaniels was here or not. He is a slot receiver who would come at a value price (and when see the real details of his contract, I am sure his deal is much less than it looks) and has the talent to be Welker 2.0. In fact, if Amendola can stay healthy (a big if), he has the potential to be better than Welker because he brings thing that Welker can't do like playing outside and much more speed.
