Amendola signed - 5 years

But, isn't Amendola considered a "slot receiver"? which is what Welker was with the Patriots?

Labels are meaningless.
He is a different player than Welker. He will not play Welkers role, Welkers role left with Welker. Yes, there will be some overlap to things Welker didn that Amendola will do, but there would be no matter who was signed.

Lloyd has had the 3 best seasons of his career playing for McDaniels, so you are right he has done a GREAT job with him.

I keep hearing that Lloyd will be cut, but my female intuition has some doubts about that. We shall see.

So if we wanted Amendola all along, why offer Wes 2 years 10 million? What if he takes it, you're stuck with two slot WRs making 11 mil total.......

Well this certainly should save the Pats some cap space over the next couple of years. welker is 6 mil per season, and I bet Amendola is around 3 mil average for the same two years. 10 mil gaurenteed over a 5 year deal is good. Gives the Pats a good out if he does keep getting hurt.

But.......can we please stop with the Amendola is better then Welker stuff. Amendola has started 17 games in his NFL career. Thats a far cry from 768 career receptions, 5 pro bowls and 2 all pros. He is younger, and if can stay healthy has more upside. But I think we could pencil in Welker for 100 catches next year. Cant say that about Amendola.

I think anyone who decides to measure Amendola's success by how well he matches Welker's numbers might be disappointed. As Bedard just pointed out, the offense is evolving. And hey, it might be healthier for them if no one player catches 120 passes. I expect BB-Josh see some differences in Amendola's game compared to Wes, so expect some differences in usage.

I think with or without Welker, Gronk was going to become the go to guy on this offense. And if Hernandez didn't get the high ankle sprain early in the season (and that was a freak injury), I think he would have been used in a lot more ways in the offense. The passing game was moving more towards the TEs. Gronk is a guy who is uncoverable.

Why? Chances are Amendola won't have freak injuries again so he can outdo Wes with #12 EASILY.

If Amendola matches Welker's 2011 numbers, then the Pats will have failed, in all honesty.

Not really they're paying at least $3.5 less for Amendola than they did for Welker last year.

We can't sign the 29-30 year old version of Welker that was here then so you cannot compare today. We paid $9.5M for that Welker now we would not come to $6M so something obviously is different.

I'm excited about the potential with Amendola....but I also have in the back of my head that out of our top 3 targets (Gronkowski, Hernandez, Amendola) none played 16 games last year....32 out of 48 games combined so 1/3 of the season was missed by these guys combined.

They are probably all healthy but like I said its in the back of my mind and these are the facts.

Man it's melt down mania here. Am I the only one that feels good today?

No...I like the move... let Denver have last generations slot receiver...we'll take the next generation's model

Cannot wait. That's a real ham and egger that needs to be let go.

The key to all of this is that we now have a solid receiving core (Gronk, Hernandez, and Amendola) around Brady for the rest of his career at a very reasonable market value. This means we have a lot of flexibility moving forward to make sure we stay at an elite level as long as we have an elite QB.

Maybe this even gives us the ability to overspend a little if a really good deep threat option becomes available to us.

That was what Welker was, insurance, when other's went down.

This is where I think some of the problem is. Its not about individual numbers. Its about complimentary football. Run game and the pass game. The short pass game and the deep pass game. The O and the D.

Forget numbers. Sure hopefully Amendolla will perform but to worry that he wont put up Welker numbers is silly. I want the team to be balanced. I want TB spreading around the ball. I want the O to be unpredictable. I want the D to get back to the way it was when the team was winning SBs.

I cant believe how the well known mantra of "stats are for losers" isnt taken seriously here when its so well known on this forum. And its true.

But everyone saw how the Offense struggled in the Arizona game. Forget about the yards it's about the receptions that Welker made in a game and kept moving the chains. That's why he was so important. Believe me if they find a way to have Amendola well belows Welkers production and still be the same juggernaut call me happy and let's move on to the D that held this team back for several years now.

Like I said it can turn out to be a great move that only the Pats would make or it can be huge mistake. Just a gamble that I strongly hope that works out.

People here keep on forgetting that Amendola played in a different division. That's not apples to apples. I wonder how long (or durable) WW would be in the NFCW, playing twice against the Seahawks and Niners defenses. That AFCE is a joke compared to the NFCW. For all we know, WW would be in crutches for the rest of his life had he played in the NFCW.

Kool Aid Chugger Philosophy 101

Yesterday: "Meh, Amendola is as durable as a China Doll, no thanks, I'm sre that Pats will sign WW".

Today: "Great job Pats- Danny is a younger more talented version than WW. Those 20 games he missed due to injury doesn't mean he's not durable"!

With all these moves for Mcdaniels guys you have to wonder if BB wins his next superbowl in the next 2 years if he is gonna retire. If that happens i will cry as much as Deus and Dabruinz did today over welker.

Can we get rid of this guy already?

with Amendola signed, do you guys think there's still a chance of the Pats getting Cruz?

Pretty excited to see what Amendola can do here. I think he has the tools to be a threat on the field and help the team out. To be honest I just want this team to be less predictable.
Two healthy TE's, RB's running and being involved in the passing team, with a deep threat who makes the play action even more lethal, along with Amendola on short and intermediate routes is a good thing in my book.

Should have grabbed Anquan Boldin while he was still available, but I guess our front office wanted to take care of the important business first (WW).
