Amendola signed - 5 years

Amendola....Lloyd....should we expect a Danario Alexander announcement tonight?

I guess that remains to be scene if he is in fact inferior.

Prior to Brady
Welker - 32 games, 96 receptions, 1121 yards, 11.67 yards per catch, 1 touchdown
Amendola - 42 games, 196 receptions, 1726 yards, 8.8 yards per catch, 7 touchdowns

I'll be the first to eat crow when Amendola posts a 122 reception 1,569 yards 9 TD season.

Amendola has a tough task of matching Welker's production. But...

I do not understand why people on this board are torching this deal before he puts on a Patriot uniform.

until he is 2) putting up comparable numbers I say this was a HUGE gamble that I hope will pay off.

This is where I think some of the problem is. Its not about individual numbers. Its about complimentary football. Run game and the pass game. The short pass game and the deep pass game. The O and the D.

Forget numbers. Sure hopefully Amendolla will perform but to worry that he wont put up Welker numbers is silly. I want the team to be balanced. I want TB spreading around the ball. I want the O to be unpredictable. I want the D to get back to the way it was when the team was winning SBs.

I cant believe how the well known mantra of "stats are for losers" isnt taken seriously here when its so well known on this forum. And its true.

I like the signing. Wes was nearing the end, Danny is 5 years his junior. Reminds me of the exiting of Seymour from the team. Big moaning and groaning but Pats continued to win.

As has been mentioned....Let's see them FIX the Defense to contain the other teams offenses. Brady has some nice weapons in the running game and TE's that can block/catch. Just need another WR to stretch the field. We'll see what transpires with Lloyd later on this month.

BB knows what has to be done to fix things. He's not just sitting back and letting his players walk unless he has a backup plan or he doesn't care if they leave. Pats still have 20mil or so in cap space. I'd like to see Vollmer and Woodhead back as well as Talib if the price is right. Trade Mallett for a pick and maybe sign Cassel for short $$ as a backup. There will be another couple of FA's signed for sure. Sit back and enjoy the next week or two.:rocker:

Reports are that Amendola broke 3 fingers and wrist signing the contract! :p

Sorry, couldnt resist.

If he can stay healthy, I think he can have an impact. He understands the system and he will have TFB throwing to him instead of Bradford who hangs his receivers out to dry to get drilled!

If Amendola matches Welker's 2011 numbers, then the Pats will have failed, in all honesty.

If he could average what he did with the Chargers in 8 games over a season I wouldn't be against it

4.7 rec/g
82 yds/g

75 rec, 1300 yards over a 16 game season.

And Josh as done such a great job with the other receiver he brought to the Patriots (Lloyd)

Lloyd has had the 3 best seasons of his career playing for McDaniels, so you are right he has done a GREAT job with him.

I think anyone who decides to measure Amendola's success by how well he matches Welker's numbers might be disappointed. As Bedard just pointed out, the offense is evolving. And hey, it might be healthier for them if no one player catches 120 passes. I expect BB-Josh see some differences in Amendola's game compared to Wes, so expect some differences in usage.

Personell decisions cannot be emotional, so all the 'he was underpaid' stuff is irrelevant.
Amednola will probably carry a first year cap hit of about 3-3.5mill, while Welker will be at least 2 mill more than that.
If 16 mill of the 31 is in the 4th and 5th year, its not really paying more.

Also, Welker was not replaced by Amendola. Amendola is a new receiver who will fill his own role, not Welkers.

But, isn't Amendola considered a "slot receiver"? which is what Welker was with the Patriots?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Denver switch to the spread as their base. This is a formation that Manning LOVES. Welker, Decker, Thomas. Not looking forward to trying to defend against that.

That's a good point, but I was simply arguing the question of, simply put, what percentage of plays he'll be on the field: he was on the field for 1,074 offensive plays (87%) in 2012. It'll be interesting to see if he reaches either of those numbers in Denver. Ditto for Amendola.

Re: Re: Amendola signed - 5 years

I agree, this is an offensive philosophy change

Pats are strategic in getting Amendola.. He will be here for 5 years corresponding to the extension that Brady signed. So after the initial learning curve, you can look forward to a great partnership.

Now we need Edelman as backup. And of course, a WR who can stretch the field.

That makes absolutely no sense.
If Amendola has a top 15 ever WR season it was a failure?

Feels like a lateral move but I don't hate it IF Danny stays healthy (and I think he will). Only $10M guaranteed (which is what they would have paid Welker) and he's younger with, in theory, similar skills.

Still need a deep threat, but really, the needed-upgrade on our team to break through the top again are on Defense, not at the slot receiver position.

This is on McDaniels. These moves better work or he might be done.
So they were really phasing Welker out last year. Those who denied it look silly now.

If WW got 6M then DA is worth a fraction of that.

Also let's call it like it is. Bob Kraft was full of it saying he wanted Welker to retire a Patriot.

Bob Kraft does not make the personnel decisions for the New England Patriots team.

C'mon, it's been over a decade since his son Drew lost his QB job.

Thank god our Tight ends were wrapped up to long term deals they're the only ones that make today bearable...although maybe Danny catching balls from
Brady might make him as good as Wes
