Elephant in the Room -- Tom Brady's Mental block in big games

I'm not saying brady isn't elite because he is, but CCG/SB is where legacies are made.

And he's 8-4 in those Games, against The Very Best.

Did you...have a Point?
spock.gif

He's 1-2 in those games in the past 2 seasons, and even the 1 Win he played really poorly.

Did you have a Point??

Freddy Versus Nathan??

Did you know??

Brady is 0-4 in Final Four Games when'is team's scored less than the Opponent!!

What a BUM.

Montana burned off 3 One-And-Dones in a row at one point.

Montana lost his last 2 "Big Games" in a row.

And yet Montana is considered ~ correctly ~ one of the very greatest of them all.

The Great Ones lose sometimes, my friend.

Sorry to break it to you.

No ones denying Bradys greatness. That was signed, sealed, and delivered in 2004.

We're discussing his recent choke-jobs in big games since the 18-1 Superbowl loss.

Lose does not equal choke. There's a big difference.

But he did choke. Deny it all you want.

He put up significantly less points in big playoff games (compared to reg season) every time since 2007 SB.

Fewer points in the playoffs (again, stop trying to shade things with the "big" playoff games nonsense) does not equal choke. This is what you can't seem to comprehend.

Points scored by Montana's offense in his playoff losses:

21
3
3
24
13
13
17

Twice he could only muster 3 points. Twice he could only muster 13 points.

Montana = choking dog?

This is pretty funny stuff. :)

The troubling trend with Brady is mental mistakes in these playoff games and they're being made because of "nervous" play.

* Ravens game - 20 secs left in the 1st half, Patriots are already in FG range, it's 1st down and Brady can't find an open receiver so he runs for 3 yds rather than throwing the ball away and then compounds the 1st mistake by failing to immediately call a timeout, too much time burns off the clock by the time a TO is called and the Patriots kick a FG. Had Brady thrown the ball away initially or called a TO immediately after his run the Pats have enough time for 2 more shots in the end zone. So UN-Bradylike.

Same game - 4th qtr, 4th down and 4 deep in Raven territory, Brady forces a throw on the run to a covered receiver despite having a running lane and only needing 4yds to get a 1st down. Again just a total misread of what was available to keep the ball. FOUR YARDS, he only needed FOUR YARDS with only 1 Raven near him, NOT in front of him but near him and Brady panicks and throws the ball to a covered receiver. Possession on downs to Ravens.
Tom Brady is over 6' tall. Tom Brady simply falling forward is good for 2 yds. He could have gotten those other 2 yds and more had he made the decision quickly and run for it. Tom no longer makes good quick thinking decisions in pressure moments.

And I'm sure we could go back and find other examples - the safety on the 1st possession in last years SB, etc.

At one time Tom Brady was icy cool in hot pressure packed situations.
That is no longer the case.

This is football you twit, not Michael Jordan on the basketball court. Righteously ignorant morons like you shake my faith in humanity.

I don't think any of us posting here have the slightest idea about what it really takes to succeed in the NFL at the level at which Tom Brady has succeeded.

We can have some vague idea of the roles that skill, commitment, hard work, teammates, coaching, the competition...and yes, a little luck...play, but we really can't understand the intangible mix that has to come together to produce greatness and Championships in this very difficult sport.

Whatever that mix is, Brady clearly has found it. The numbers he put up this year (number two in ESPN's QBR, number six by the traditional Pass Rating measure) suggest that his skills are still where they need to be, as they have been for several years.

Why did he win three League Championships in his first four years as starter without winning another over the next eight (seven) years, despite there more trips to the AFCCG and two more to the SB?

I don't know for sure, and neither does anyone else posting in this thread, but it has something to do with how all the pieces did or didn't come together at the right time.

Because we are blessed with Brady and Belichick, I sometimes also think we tend to overlook the fact that "the other guys are pretty darn good too." That's why I defended Flacco out here before the AFCCG and why I have always come to Peyton's defense when the Peyton Hate gets a little too much to stomach. Flacco isn't in Brady or P. Manning's class, but he sure isn't the doofus some were painting him to be.

So, let's stop this talk about mental blocks or whatever. I can only imagine that those who know Brady the best would just laugh at that suggestion, if they even wasted their time reading it.

To me choke IMHO means losing to a clearly inferior team/competition.

If we are going to say Tom Brady choked then I guess we have to say Kurt Waner choked in Super Bowl XXXVI? Clearly they were the "greatest show on turf."

Of course we know that wasn't the case-The Rams played an underrated great team with a great game plan.

Nice post, but it's the same thing myself and others have tried to convey throughout this monstrosity. The hope is that those who say Brady "choked" or has a "mental block" will educate themselves and realize the irrationality of such ignorantly simplistic claims. Sadly, the game's sheer complexity eludes them.

the notion of 'choking' is a stretch.....I don't believe this is true.....

what I do believe is that the number of teams out there capable of disrupting the things that brady excels at is increasing........

unfortunately, I don't believe Brady will want to change things up enough to where he is not as critical to the success of the pats offense......if he really wants to win another championship, it will only happen by making this offense more run oriented, therefore providing fewer, but better opportunities for the passing game.

What an arogant statement. Some of you care more about brady and his legacy than you do the team he plays for.

You're right on the need for greater balance and less on Brady's shoulders. But the choice is not his, it's the coaching staff's, and has again as much to do with the cyclical process of roster building. I've said it before in this thread: compare how the Pats roster and schematic emphases were built in the Super Bowl WINNING years vs. the last five years. They're cycling around to becoming a similarly complete team once again. Brady has been key to the Pats being competitive in the interim.

What an arogant statement. Some of you care more about brady and his legacy than you do the team he plays for.

Simple minds often confuse things they don't understand with arrogance. ;)

Those decisions are made above Brady's paygrade. Those are philosophical decisions and the OC and ultimately the HC are responsible for them. They game plan and set rosters. Brady is one of the most adaptable QB's to ever play the game. He doesn't care about how they score as long as they do. It's not his fault that they have become a far better passing than running team. That is what Bill has chosen to focus his offense on since 2007. In part because Dillon was one and done and Maroney never panned out and Polian got the rules tweeked. He seems to want to shift to a more balanced offense of late, probably because the pass happy option he persued beginning in 2007 hasn't panned out come playoff time. And he's concerned about Welker's shelf life, and he can't seem to locate that perimeter WR to stretch defenses and his dream TE centric offense hasn't been able to stay on the field. But the simple fact is he doesn't yet trust the running game, whether with good reason not entirely apparent to the peanut gallery or not. Ridley was benched for the playoffs last season due to fumbling issues late in the season. Vereen was essentially red shirted. Sadly Ridley had a costly fumble against Baltimore. And while Vereen had a breakout game against the Texans, it was largely as a receiver. And coaches chose not to feature him in the Baltimore game plan until he had to be featured after Ridley was knocked out he didn't exactly light them up.

LOL Some of you guys just care more about pointing at a single scapegoat for your crushing disappointment than you do actually understanding how something like that ever happens.
