Wade Phillips: Welker not real athletic.

You're right Wade. Welker is not very athletic...he's also slow, can't get open, or catch if he DOES get open.

Cover someone else.

:rocker:

Poking the bear? I thought that was Rex Ryan's best move...

Re: Wes Welker: I'm more athletic than Wade Phillips.

Phillips is right that Welker is no AJ Green... he's better.

This is perhaps the dumbest thing Phillips could have said going into this match. I wonder what Arian Foster thinks?

Maybe WW should make this his Twitter avatar type thingy whatcha ma call it somethin or another?

I see what Phillips was getting at, and it's basically the same thing that all the anti-Welker crew have been posting here in thread after thread:

Short
Slow(ish)
White (usually unsaid and sometimes implied)
Not a "real" receiver like a Johnson or Fitzgerald

Amazingly, despite all those limitations, that short, slow, quasi WR has found a way to rack up 672 catches, 7459 yards and 37 TDs from 2007-2012, averaging 80.2 ypg.*

* 672 catches is 80 catches more than the next guy (Brandon Marshall)

7459 yards is the 4th highest total during that time, behind Calvin Johnson, Roddy White and Reggie Wayne

Not counting Jordan Norwood (only 36 catches in that time), 80.2 ypg is 6th in the NFL, behind Andre Johnson, Antonio Brown, Calvin Johnson, Roddy White and Brandon Marshall

37 TDs ties him for 17th in the NFL in that span. Not too bad for a guy sharing TDs with the likes of Moss (#1 on the list) and Gronk (#16 on the list).

Keep looking at the numbers from a blowout, Wade.....

I can't decide if Phillips is the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man or the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

Correction....that's

"Welk-LA"

Why is anyone concerned about anything Wade has to say. When was the last time he coached in a Super Bowl, or even a conference championship. I believe last year was the first time he was ever in the divisional round. Not the greatest resume from someone who has coached as long as he has.

Re: Wes Welker: I'm more athletic than Wade Phillips.

Nothing like bulletin board material...

I thought we were just saying that these guys shouldn't need "bulletin board" material....

Or does that just apply to the Texans?

Never mind. It shouldn't be an insult to say Wes Welker isn't very athletic, he's not. He's a bad ass athlete, no doubt. But if he were an exceptional athlete, he'd have gone in the first round. He'd have never left San Diego or Miami.

I've watched him since he played at Texas Tech & athletic was never how I would have described him. He's a smart, hustle player with tremendous drive. He's doing very well in New England, because he's just like Brady & Bellichick...... two guys who are also not very athletic.

I'm sure Wade did not mean to insult Welker any more than I am. He is what he is, a throwback to the glory years of football when a 4.4 forty wasn't on anybody's radar & they thought leather helmets protected their noggins.

The problem with your position is that Welker is, in fact, very athletic, and he's got the numbers to prove it. What he is not is tall and rocket propelled. Phillips got caught up with the word "athletic", when he could have said something like "Welker is more quick and about cuts than he is blazing fast and about killing you deep...".

With all due respect, keep crapping on Wes. :)

there's a difference between a hack writer and a team coach.

but yeah, none of it matters one bit 430 sunday

I think he probably meant "acrobatic."

Who cares about this honestly, this is the exact reason BB is cagey with the press because they spin nonsense like this into a story. Do you honestly think Phillips doesn't respect Welker or his ability?

Yes, exactly. I feel like he almost has to be twice as athletic to compete in the league with guys who are so much bigger than he is. I guess I'm just looking at athletic in a different way. ANYONE who makes it in the NFL is athletic. I mean, I hope the poster wasn't honestly suggesting that only guys who go in the first round are "athletic" because that would be the dumbest stuff I've read today.
