I think the very fact that DT is such a rotational position and not an every down one that I don't think it's a high draft need unless there's a blue chipper available like Jesse Williams.

Completely disagree.

Pats have been getting by with a bunch of marginal late rnd / udfa talent next to Wilfork for years. Deadrick and Love SHOULD be the rotational guys that spell Wilfork and another big-time DT.

Getting another talented DT would change the entire defense. It has been a serious need for many years now. They know it too, having tried to get FAs, but never working out. Haynesworth, Fanene, & Red Bryant for example.

I would feel very comfortable moving forward with a DE group of Jones, Ninko, Scott, Francis, and Bequette.

Another talented DT forces the Off to use 4 OL to block your 2 DTs, leaving a TE or RB to block one DE, and a 1on1 on Jones.

Back when they had a front of warren-wilfork-seymour, it was not uncommon to see they opposing team use 6 players to block the front 3. That left a lot of room for the lbs to make plays...and they did.

Glad to see Stankiewitch on your lost Tipp. PSU's ol has been criminally under-coached the last few years. Didn't even use free weights until O'Brien took over. Many of their linemen lacked functional strength. Stefan Wisniewski worked out with his uncle Steve. That's how he made it. I know Bill Kenney has Mass. ties. But, he was a lousy OL coach. PSU brought the fossil that is **** Anderson in to help him. Had 2 ol coaches and there was no development. Stank was excellent on the shotgun snap. Started 25 straight games following Wisniewski. A year on our practice squad and in our weight-training system. Might have a decent C. Good UDFA candidate.

And how many have they drafted? I'm not saying it's not a need, I'm saying it's not a desperate need that has to be filled in the firrst round of the draft no matter what. I've said that I'm happy with Jesse Williams or Jonathan Hankins. But some people talk about it as something we need desperately which is rubbish. What type od DT would you draft in the first? A space eater? A Penetrator? Neither would play all three downs. And a prospect who does both at a top level probably isn't falling all the way down to #30-32.

It's all well and good saying we need another "big-time DT", but if they're not there, that's fairly redundant. And the two that are potentially there (Hankins and Jesse Williams) I've said I'm happy to draft. So I struggle to see what you don't agree with.

A big bonus is now the Bill O'Brien ties with Penn State, so any UDFA candidate from Penn State with NFL potential would be welcome. Stankiewitch also has experience playing offensive guard, so positional flexibility is a plus.

Training camp rosters have now expanded from 80 players to 90 players, so I would prefer a greater emphasis on UDFAs than NFL geriatrics.

There's been some big changes in the NFL Draft Scout rankings since I last tried a mock so I thought it was time again, So here goes:

Round 1

Tavon Austin, WR, W. Virginia

IMG-2945-Tavon-Austin.jpg

I'm assuming that Cooper, Ansah and probably Jesse Williams are off the board by the time we pick. Firstly, Tavon Austin, with his short area quickness, his versatility and his every down ability make him an ideal Patriots fit. In particular, his return ability means he's a player that doesn't have to be thrown in at the deep end to start providing value immediately. And with Welker, Woodhead and Edelman all FA's, Austin could slot in to the roster spot of whomever isn't re-signed.

I started off being a bit cool on an Austin pick. I'm warming up to it more and more.

Round 2

Traded back to mid-third picking up additional 6th rounder

Round 3A

Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia

Alec-Ogletree-23001-L.jpg

Would solve the inability of our LB's to drop back in coverage. Would be ideal alongside Mayo in the sub-package. He's very fast, a strong tackler with really good length for the position. Although he's underused as a blitzer by Georgia, I think he's got a lot of upside there too. He's not the BB desired size but he's a versatile playmaker which should appeal. If he really is there in the mid-third, I'm banging the table very hard for Ogletree. And if we pass on him, I'll be banging the table with my head.

Round 3B

Cornelius Carradine, DE, Florida State

Clemson-Florida-St-Foot-2-.jpg

As long as he checks out medically, I'd still take "Tank" in the first. He's a Chandler Jones clone. By adding Carradine and Ogletree, our defensive front 7 would have had a near first round upgrade in my view.

Round 6

Tyrann Mathieu, DB, LSU

sw23-mathieutyrann-25-4_3_r560.jpg

Going for upside with this pick. At the very least (if one ignores the real risk of suspension), Mathieu would be an elite Special Teamer. He could also be that 4th/5th CB who blitzes as Derrick Martin did so effectively the other day.

Round 7

Terron Armstead, OT/OG, Arkansas Pine-Bluff

dt.common.streams.StreamServer.cls

Outstanding athleticism for a man his size. I sdaid in the thread I started on him that his athleticism came close to Jon Cooper. Re-watching him, I stand by that. My only concern is that he looks thinner in his lower half than his top half which might mitigate against an OG conversion. But there is too much upside not to draft him and either keep him as a developmental OT or switch him to OG.

Round 7

Caraun Reed, DT, Princeton

YOGADCKCOSHNRRW.20111212201734.JPG

This is for the DT lobby. Ideally I'd have liked to get one earlier but the upside of my other picks prevented it. I think Reed is a bit of a sleeper. He's got excellent athleticism and I can see him playing both DT and LDE.

Ideal UDFA's

MarQueis Gray, QB, TE, Minnesota

A Hernandez backup?

Kyle Juscyk, FB,TE Harvard

Probably redundant if Hooman stays but has great hands.

Malcolm Bronson, S, McNeese State

A powerful safety with surprising speed.

John Boyett, S, Oregon

Excellent value if he's not drafted. McCourty, Wilson and Gregory are probably set. Boyett and Bronson could battle out for the Chung position.

Luke Marquardt, OT, Asuza Pacific

Because he's a 6'8" OT!

Omar Hunter, DT, Florida

Nick Kasa, TE, Colorado

I really wanted Leon McFadden to be that backup to Dennard and Talib but the value of Ogletree and Carradine was too great.

And that's my first mock of 2013!

There's been some big changes in the NFL Draft Scout rankings since I last tried a mock so I thought it was time again, So here goes:

Round 3A

Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia

Alec-Ogletree-23001-L.jpg

Ogletree in the 3rd?

I like it. I'm not a big fan of Austin, but I like the next three picks and some of the FAs.

Makes some sense. He's had drug issues and Lavonte David didn't go until the mid-late 2nd.

Which I still don't understand.

1 trade for 2nd 3rd and 6th
2 Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State
2 Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State
3 Cornellius Carradine, DE, Florida State
3 Jelani Jenkins, OLB, Florida
6 Tyrann Mathieu, DB, formerly of LSU
7 Kapron Lewis-Moore, DT, Notre Dame
7 Zach Boren, FB/LB, Ohio State

Defense: 28
Corners: Talib, Dennard, Dowling, Poyer, Cole, Mathieu
Safeties: McCourty, Wilson, Gregory, Ebner
Linebackers: Mayo, Spikes, Hightower, Fletcher, Jenkins, White
DT: Wilfork, Love, Deaderick, Lewis-Moore, Forston
DE: Jones, Ninkovich, Cunningham, Carradine, Francis, Bequette, Scott

Offense: 27
QB: Brady, Mallet
WR: Welker, Lloyd, Edelman, Wheaton, Slater
RB: Ridley, Vereen, Bolden, Woodhead, Demps
FB: Boren
TE: Gronkowski, Hernandez, Ballard, Fells, Hoomanawanui
OL: Mankins, Vollmer, Solder, Cannon, Connolly, Wendell, Thomas, McDonald, Zusevics

ST: 3
Mesko, Gostkowski, Aiken

That's 58 right now, hard cutting the last 5, injuries may help shake things out in camp.

There is no way Arrington doesn't make next year, for all his faults outside he's a good slot corner and knows the system

Arrington's a free agent. Have to sign him first.

ATippett56 NFL Week 18 Mock Draft Special :D

1st Round - Jesse Williams, DT - Alabama
2nd Round - Kenny Vaccaro, FS - Texas
3rd Round - Brian Winters, OT - Kent State
7th Round - Josh Johnson, CB - Purdue
7th Round - Nigel Malone, CB - Kansas State

I do not like drafting three DBs, even if two of them are 7s. It feels like a wasted opportunity.

That and getting rid of the nearly useless Fells.

FA:

- Pats re-sign FAs Wes Welker, Aqib Talib, Sebastian Vollmer, Danny Woodhead, Julian Edelman, Kyle Arrington, Myron Pryor, Jake Ballard (RFA), Michael Hoomanawanui (RFA), Donald Thomas, Dane Fletcher, and one of Marquice Cole/Derrick Martin; they will need to do some restructuring to accomplish this
- Let go: Deion Branch, Pat Chung, Trevor Scott (would like to resign, but $$ may not be there), Tracey White (would like to resign, but $$ may not be there), Niko Koutovides, Josh Barrett, Will Allen, Jamey Richard
- Cut/traded: Daniel Fells, Spencer Larsen, Brian Waters (retired), probably one of Marquice Cole/Derrick Martin (money issue, unless Kyle Arrington walks)
- Pats sign QB Matt Cassel

Trades:

- Pats trade 32 (590 points) to Dallas for 50 and 82 (580 points).
- Pats trade Ryan Mallett to Arizona for 102, 135 and a conditional 2013 pick;
- Pats trade their 2 7th round picks to Philly for #165 in the 6th round.

Draft:

All picks based on CBS Sports/NFL DraftScout's current (1/1) rankings (indicated in parentheses) and taken within 5 picks of their current order:

50. Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia (81). 6'3" 234#.

11090503.jpg

Freak!
Physical freak with tremendous range and upside, will solve the LB coverage problems. Dont'a Hightower moves up on the line at times. If Trent Murphy declares, he is an option. Otherwise, the Pats flip this pick for a 2013 1st.

62. Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon St. (57) 6' 182#.

Markus+Wheaton+Oregon+State+v+Arizona+h3z11JsoStCl.jpg

Greyhound!
Silky smooth WR with a bit of Reggie Wayne/Greg Jennings in his game. If the Pats re-sign Welker and Edelman, a WR group of Welker, Lloyd, Wheaton and Edelman would be very nice.

82. David Amerson, DB, North Carolina St. (83) 6'2" 194#.

YPo6l.Em.156.jpeg

Stud Horse!
Big DB who was an interception machine in 2011 but struggled this year. Move him to safety along with McCourty, and he will match up beautifully on TEs and big WRs as well.

94. Cornelius "Tank" Carradine, DE, Florida St. (103) 6'5" 265#.

rn_u_tankcarradine_ms_600.jpg

Wounded Beast!
1st round talent who slips because of ACL injury. Goes on PUP and probably gets a red shirt year, but could be another Chandler Jones. William Gholston (114) is intriguing, but his inconsistency is scary.

102. Brian Winters, OG, Kent St. (116) 6'5" 310#.

Brian-Winters-Kent-St..jpg

Stud Horse!
Physical, tough, small school lineman reminiscent of Logan Mankins, should step in immediately and eventually take over at LG.

135. Brandon Williams, DT, Missouri Southern (143). 6'3" 328#

Brandon_original_original.jpg

Sleeper!
Small school prospect with hints of Vince Wilfork kind of athleticism, had 8.5 sacks and 16.5 TFL playing NT this year. Can penetrate as well as be a space eater.

160. Reid Fragel, OT, Ohio St. (161) 6'7" 305#.

fragel620.jpg

Sleeper!
Former TE with one year of experience at RT. Very athletic, could develop as a swing tackle or even eventual starter.

Lot of speed and athleticism with that draft, plus some physical toughness. A fair amount of overlap with Manx's draft - not surprising, given that we like a lot of the same guys, and he's had a big influence on my thoughts. It's ironic though that Manx currently has the Pats taking Tavon Austin in the 1st round - my binky at WR for the Pats for months, but I just wouldn't take a WR in the 1st - while I have them taking his binky Wheaton in the 2nd. :)

Initial 2013 Roster:

QB(2): Brady, Cassel
RB(5): Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead, Brandon Bolden, Jeff Demps
WR(5): Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Markus Wheaton, Julian Edelman, Matt Slater
TE(4): Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Jake Ballard, Michael Hoomanawanui
OT(5): Nate Solder, Sebastian Vollmer, Marcus Cannon, Reid Fragel, Markus Zukevics
OG/C(6): Logan Mankins, Dan Connolly, Brian Winters, Donald Thomas, Ryan Wendell, Nick McDonald

DT(5): Vince Wilfork, Kyle Love, Brandon Deaderick, Brandon Williams, Myron Pryor/Marcus Forston
DE(5): Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Jermaine Cunningham, Justin Francis, Jake Bequette; Dont'a Hightower also plays DE; PUP/IR: Tank Carradine
LB(5): Jerod Mayo, Dont'a Hightower (also plays DE), Brandon Spikes, Alec Ogletree, Dane Fletcher
S(5): Devin McCourty, David Amerson, Steve Gregory, Tavon Wilson, Nate Ebner
CB(5): Aqib Talib, Alfonzo Dennard, Ras-I Dowling, Kyle Arrington, Marquice Cole/Derrick Martin

ST(3): Stephen Gostkowski, Zoltan Mesko, Danny Aiken

That's 55 players. There would like be only four OTs, cutting the number to 54. The last cut would work itself out.

Note that if Alec Ogletree goes earlier than #50 the Pats try to flip #50 for a 2014 1st round pick, and then they probably try to re-sign Tracy White or Niko Koutovides later on, or promote Jeff Tarpinian from the PS. Either way, the Pats get a 1st round talent at #50 in Ogletree, or hopefully a 2014 1st.

Not sure about Carradine but its impossible not to love everything else.

Magnificent job. Though it’s missing some binkies it is actually realistic as opposed to my wish list.

Magnificent job. Though it’s missing some binkies it is actually realistic as opposed to my wish list.

I'm assuming we're drafting 30-32, and why not assume 32 for now? There are about 7 guys who I would definitely take our strongly consider taking at that point:

Johnathan Hankins, DT
Ziggy Ansah, DE
Jonathan Cooper, OG
Jesse Williams, DT
---------------------------------------------------------
Sheldon Richardson, DT/DE (tons of issues, but also tons of talent)
Dion Jordan, DE/LB (unclear where he fits, but tons of talent and versatility)
Sam Montgomery, DE (some questions, but definitely worth consideration)
---------------------------------------------------------
Alec Ogletree, OLB

I list Ogeltree last and separately not because he's a lesser talent than the others, but because I think taking another LB with our 1st pick is a bigger stretch than going OL or DL. But if we trade back, and consider it part of moving Hightower around, then it's a different matter.

If the first 7 guys are gone when we pick, then I wouldn't be unhappy taking Ogletree at 32. But I'd be thrilled trading back, especially if we think he might slip. If he's there, take him. If not, trade into 2014 and target Kyle Van Noy or Anthony Barr, if we can't land bigger fish like Stephon Tuitt, Louis Nix or Austin Seferian Jenkins.

^What do you think about Sharrif Floyd and Kawann Short?

Im not very high on Montgomery by any means. What role would you utilize him in for the Pats? I dont think he has the athletic ability or the versatility to move him all around the front 7. Maybe he could beef up and play the LDE/DT role but playing at 280-290 rather than his current 265, I would doubt his already marginal quickness.

I don't think Short is quick enough to do what I think we need. I'd like a 3 -tech who can get up the field and rush the passer. Not sure Short has the burst to do that. Might become a pretty good 5-tech. Just not a dominant one. And, there are bigger guys available who might be like; Jenkins and Jesse Williams. I'm curious to see Floyd tonight. Hasn't really done that at florida. Played a lot of de in a 3-4.
