Given that the Patriots are currently scoring 11.5 ppg more than the Packers, and that the Packers are currently 10th in the NFL in scoring, I'd love to see the poster's underlying reasoning for that claim.

Obviously he fails at basic math, for him to come up with problem solving is out of the question :D

The Cards beat 'em, the Hawks beat 'em. Is it really necessary to remind ourselves that our gang has a stronger defense AND more dynamic offense then either of those?

Why the panic?

Because they whipped the Texans? Let me tell you, the Texans have been skating on thin ice for over a month now and it just broke on them last night. No shock.
Cause they managed to win a shootout with the mighty Bills? Oooo.
Cause they squeaked out an OT win over the Jets? wow...
Cause they beat the Fins by a TD. Now I'm really scared.

We on the other hand have been trying new things, bringing top draft picks up to speed, and preparing for the home stretch.

Final score: Niners 31, Patsies 13

***SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS VS NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS PREGAME THREAD*** - Page 40 - 49erswebzone.com Forum

That reasoning is strange to me. The Pats are no good because they didn't beat the Bills or Dolphins by enough, but it's no problem that San Fran tied and then lost to the Rams (a team that we absolutely massacred) in the same timeframe?

Isn't it obvious to every football fan on the planet, at this point, that division games often end up being a tougher fight than they should be for the favorite? Fact of the matter is, the Pats are 5-0 in the division, and that's why they wrapped theirs up last week, while the Niners still haven't done the same. I'm also not ready to concede that the Seahawks, in Seattle, are worse than the 49ers. In any case, the Pats' defense is so far removed from where it was in October that it's barely even relevant. The Talib trade created exactly the sort of domino effect that we hoped for, and Dennard has basically given us what we hoped Dowling would be able to (a press corner who can play credibly in man coverage).

The 49ers are a very good team, and I think that this may be the Pats' toughest test of the season (this game worried me most, from a purely competitive standpoint, even before the Texans game, although the Texans game meant more from a playoff seeding perspective). But the Pats don't match up nearly as badly with the 49ers as a lot of people seem to think.

We all know that the Pats can stop a between-the-tackles running game without overcommitting to it (thanks to Wilfork and Spikes primarily, but plenty of other guys too). If the ends maintain gap discipline and don't give Kaepernick easy running lanes, then I like the secondary's chances matching up against the 49ers receivers. Vernon Davis will be a tough cover in theory, but he's been quiet for a month so, so I dunno what's up with him. Is he hurt? If not, then this might be the game where he snaps out of it, because defending TEs is still a weakness for the Pats' defense. On a side note, it sure seems like that's a weakness for most defenses around the league. There are few enough truly dynamic TEs out there that defenses probably just don't see them enough to be prepared.

In any case, Kaepernick throwing to his WRs doesn't really scare me. I wouldn't be surprised to see multiple picks; Belichick finally has enough talent in the secondary to get back to playing mind-games with young and/or dumb QBs like he used to. This all assumes that Talib and Dennard are good to go, of course. If not, who knows what the gameplan is. Worst case scenario is something like McCourty back to corner starting opposite Arrington, with Wilson or Chung starting alongside Gregory at safety. That would be really, really bad. And I even think that McCourty is pretty good at CB, albeit an entirely different type of corner than Talib and Dennard. It's losing him at safety that would really hurt.

Based on our team's early season play, I saw these two games on the schedule (Houston & SF), and pegged us for two losses. Based on recent play, I thought we'd have a better chance of beating SF than Houston. I think Belichick has this team prepared to face anyone right now, and win or lose, the Pats are going to play a very solid, methodical game. Give the Pat's O-Line credit for shutting down JJ Watt (sack wise), and I expect the same attention to Aldon Smith, which should allow Brady some time to work his magic. My prediction is Pats 21-49ers-17, though this game can go either way.

The 49ers are a solid football team but we can win this game.:cool:I hope our secondary isnt as banged up.

If Gronk returns we will massacre SF if not it will be a fight.

Oh boy...the Packers score 12 points per game less than we do. Do these people even watch the NFL? That'd be like me saying "I think Miami's defense is better than the 49ers'".

Well, Green Bay has a deeper WR group... but that's where their advantages begin and end.

Personally...I hope they are able to hold Gronk out until possibly the last game of the season..or even better..the playoffs.
My perspective of this game is one of..."It's a playoff Game!" This team has something to prove and that is.... that they are still the elite of the AFC and openin' up a can of whoop ass on this team would solidify their place in the pecking order..so to speak.

Yeah, they eat up TEs. Name me one elite TE the 49ers have faced this season. San Francisco has played against two above-average offenses: Green Bay, on the first game of the season, when they were still sputtering, and the Giants, who absolutely crushed them.

We don't need Gronk to beat their defense. They have a great defense but our offense can, and will, score on anyone's defense. I respect the team but they are far from "scary" to me.

Here's the thing. Comparing what teams have done in the first half of the season is ridiculous. Most teams undergo drastic changes over the course of the season. Some teams like the Pats constantly improve, others like the Cardinals, fall apart. So it really doesn't matter what the Pats did against the Cardinals, Seahawks, and Rams. They were a different team then. If we want to get a better feel for where these 2 teams are right now, we should look at the last 4 or 5 games and THEN make our comparisons.

BTW- when did the Niners play the Packers?

Talk about a far cry from the texans fans we heard from last week

Congrats on your win vs the Texans! I did not expect a blowout like that.

I'm a 49ers fan and I'm excited about this game because this is a huge opportunity to make a statement!

A big concern for this game is Brady & Welker. 49ers defense struggles vs small shifty WRs like Victor Cruz, and Danny Amendola, usually they will put Rogers on these guys which I think is a mis-match, and always gets exposed. I expect the Pats to take full advantage of this.

Besides that, I think it'll be one hell of a game because our defense looooves to play on prime time, expect them to come out and hit your players like no other team. Your receivers better put on extra pads for this one! :D

You all are gonna fly clear across the country to have your hats handed to you like so many other teams this season. I've seen the 9'er's schedule...This is going to be the true test..not only for the 9er's but more so for the Patriots. Compound the fact that Brady grew up a niners fan...lol...well....enough said...

I wouldn't say they get eaten up by TE's but they definitely don't eat up TE's either.

SF's defense has allowed 16 TD's this season 3 rushing and 13 receiving. They have allowed 6 TD's to TE's.

To TE's this season:
50 Receptions
421 Yards
6 TD's
against 76 targets.

SF's Defense allows 66% Completion rate and 8.42 YPC to TE's.

This reminded me that the last time the Pats played the Niners, it was in 2008 and Brady was out for the season. Crazy to think that the last time Brady his childhood team was week 17 in 2004.

Hopefully the offensive line's return to health wasn't a one-week thing. I also know that some people want Gronk held out until the playoffs, but I'm not one of them. As soon as he can get back out on the field, I hope he does. Let him put in the work now to get back up to playing speed, and if we win out thanks in part to his contributions, then he can get whatever rest he needs during the bye week. This will be a much, much easier matchup for the Pats if Vollmer, Mankins, and Gronk are all in there. If they don't bring their A-game in pass blocking, then it's tough to see them coming out of this game with a W.

Well you guys definitely have the advantage for this game. I would actually be real surprised if the 49ers come out with a win. I'm predict there's going to be a lot of short passing from Brady and crew which is going to provide plenty of opportunities for our defense to do what they do best, and that's hit people.

Many opposing WR's we've faced like TB's Mike Williams, AZ's Doucet, and NO's Colston have felt the after effects of getting lit up by our safeties, to the point they started short arming their opportunities the following week! Ain't that crazy!

But one thing I know for sure, is that your players will feel this one. It's going to be the most physical game they'll play all year.
