At a time when many football fans are wondering why the NFL keeps suspending players for using Adderall as a performance-enhancing drug, Bears receiver Brandon Marshall says there’s another common prescription medication that players use to get an edge: Marshall says he has heard stories of other players using Viagra as a performance enhancer.

Yes, he means on the football field. Get your mind out of the gutter.

According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times, Marshall told reporters today that he has heard stories of other players using Viagra to get an edge.

Depending on what a guy's packing, it could be tremendous advantage in pass blocking.

When there's a group of players trying recover a fumble, announcers and players always say "You don't want to know what happens on the bottom of that pile."

Based on this news, you really, really don't want to know.

Anyone else get the feeling that he's really not well liked and a bunch of guys are trying to eff with him?

Hahahahaha he's clearly joking. As in, "wow, if Adderall is a PED, so is Viagra."

No wonder Cromartie's been balling like crazy this year.

I can't imagine that's true, just based upon what it does. We took care of a guy who took Viagra then went to play basketball with his buds (weird decision, I know). The guy passed out on the court and required a full cardiac workup.

That said, in the words of Stephen Colbert, "If you have an erection that lasts longer than four hours, YOU'RE WELCOME."

I've heard stories of guys using gatorade as a PED. Don't know how much truth there is to it.

Actually it is very true. Wife does lots of triathlons and everyone seems to be taking low dose Cialis. Works by increasing blood flow. This has been used in the cycling circles for years.

I wonder if there have been any clinical studies on that, or if that's a placebo type of mind over matter effect.

Viagra as a PED

“Basically, it allows you to compete with a sea level, or near-sea level, aerobic capacity at altitude,” Kenneth W. Rundell, the director of the Human Performance Laboratory at Marywood, said of Viagra.

Some experts are more skeptical. Anthony Butch, the director of the Olympic drug-testing lab at U.C.L.A., said it would be “extremely difficult, if not impossible” to prove that Viagra provided a competitive edge, given that the differences in performance would be slight and that athletes would probably take it in combination with other drugs. Scientists have the same uncertainty about the performance-enhancing effects of human growth hormone, though it is banned. But some athletes do not need proof — only a belief — that a drug works before using it, Dr. Butch said.
I asked two of my exercise physiologist colleagues about the potential performance-enhancing effects of Viagra. Both felt that it is unlikely that the drug would help. The reason being that the problem isn’t getting blood flow to the muscle but the muscles using the blood flow. One was a little more believing of the theoretical improvement, but felt it would have no practical effect. The other felt there was almost no way it could work. In sum, it’s probably a placebo effect that leads athletes to use Viagra. This effect could be exacerbated by positive sexual experiences.
