After the Talib trade - who do you want playing in the secondary?

Promote Sterling Moore from the practice squad.

Moore and Arrington at the Corners
Chung and Ebner at safety.

Bring in McCourty for Nickel situations and Talib in the dime. Cut Dennard.

And hire Earthwind Moreland as the secondary coach.

LCB McCourty
RCB Talib
S Wilson/Chung/Gregory 3 man rotation
Nickel Dennard
Dime Cole or Arrington

CB: Talib
CB: Dennard
FS: McCourty
SS: Chung

"Money": Wilson
Nickel: Cole

Arrington? Back to being a gunner.

i agree with this.

Anything that pulls the team passing defense out of the bottom half of the league.

CB: Talib
CB: Dennard (This guy had a 1st rd. ranking till off-field problems)
S: McCourty
S: Chung/Gregory/Wilson (Whoever works)

I think Mccourty will play both CB and FS.

Base
LCB - Talib
RCB - Dennard
FS - McCourty
SS - Chung

Sub
LCB - Talib
RCB - McCourty
SCB - Dennard
FS - Gregory
SS - Wilson

Just a thought could be wrong

Call me crazy but before moving McCourty to safety I would like to see Chung, Gregory, McCourty, and Talib to work together. It's our best four at their natural positions. Provided Chung and Gregory are healthy enough coming out of the bye to try this for a few weeks if it still looks bad move McCourty to safety. Keep in mind these four are just the base and shuffling will occur in sub as Dennard and Wilson should be your 5th and 6th Dbs but dennard is probably better suited to play outside.

When constructing a secondary, it's not so much about having your best 2 Cornerbacks and best 2 Safteys on the field, but rather your best 4 Defensive Backs playing together in a complimentary manner.

Our top 4 Defensive Backs are McCourty, Talib, Dennard, and then one of Chung/Gregory/Wilson.

Once Aqib Talib is eligible for games, he immediately becomes out best Cornerback. His strengths lie in his size, range, and ability to jam receivers and play man coverage. When choosing a player to start across Talib, you would like a player who offers a similar style of play. Alfonzo Dennard offers that, and he has been on the rise these past few weeks and I believe his play has warranted a starting position.

McCourty was our best Cornerback - before this trade - yet still may be our best overall Defensive Back. He struggles in man coverage yet excels in zone coverage, and has all the traits of a prototypical Free Safety. We have to remember, the coaches WANTED to move McCourty to Safety permanently this year, but they didn't trust in the other Cornerbacks enough to take away his presence. Now, Talib is in Foxborough. Dennard has established himself. And with the continuous struggles at Safety and the continuous death by 50 yard passes, McCourty can finally "go home."

There is a lot of praise for Wilson, but mind you, his rookie mistakes have cost us a game and has made us susceptible to the deep ball. I like Wilson as the "Money" player, it's a good role for him at this point in his career. That would leave Gregory and Chung as options to play alongside McCourty. What I think the coaches will do is rotate these players depending on situation. Expecting the pass? McCourty-Gregory. Need to make a stand against the run? McCourty-Chung.

The Patriots haven't really been playing the traditional Free Safety/Strong Safety positions as much as Left Safety/Right Safety. McCourty is well rounded in both pass defense and run defense, and rotating a player who specializes in either or next to him could pay off.

Therefore, the Patriots new-look secondary would be:

LCB: Alfonzo Dennard (In my observations, Dennard has played better when aligned as the LCB).
RCB: Aqib Talib (He can play any CB position, LCB, RCB, SCB).
LS: Devin McCourty (Has been groomed on the left side his whole career).
RS: Gregory/Chung (Pass: Gregory, Run: Chung)

SCB: Kyle Arrington
Dime: Tavon Wilson.

IMHO, with everyone healthy, this is by far our strongest secondary. That being said, I could see Belichick choosing to keep McCourty at safety as long as Gregory is not 100%. McCourty might even be our future all-pro free safety. However, for now, we need to use our current resources best.

LCB McCourty
RCB Talib
S Wilson/Chung/Gregory 3 man rotation
Nickel Dennard
Dime Cole or Arrington

According to Mike Lombardi, the Patriots will permanently move McCourty to Safety.

Regardless, I'd like to see Talib and Dennard at corner with McCourty and Chung at safety.

As has been mentioned, this is Lombardis guess, not information from the organization.

Thanks. Never said it was, hence the 'according to', but I wouldn't be surprised that Lombardi has inside information from Bill which has also 'been mentioned'.

Chung could be brought in on obvious running downs though, if the other team has any clue what they're doing, they should audible out of the run and throw directly at Chung.

Curran chimes in on McCourty's "imminent" move to FS:

McCourty move to safety seems imminent

And yes, I understand that this is all either speculation or hearsasy, mostly based on Mike Lombardi's thoughts and Curran's own opinions about DMac as a CB.

Personally I think it makes sense, but I have no comment on the likelihood of the rumor.

McCourty was drafted as a CB and that was where BB played him until injuries and performance issues manifested. Lots of speculation now about McCourty's position. Looks to me like he made the switch a couple of weeks ago, but another clue will come Sun. before Talib gets on the field. If they have switched him, he will again be at safety with Dennard, Arrington and Cole the CBs.

When will Aqib Talib join the Pats? Is he already in Foxboro? I know he is still under suspension and play against the Bills this weekend. Can he still practice with the team?

After his suspension. I would hope so. No.

I think this would be the best scenario

:rocker:

Does any one think if any of these moves will help us be aggressive (blitzing and taking more chances in pressuring QB) with front 7 instead of 3 or 4 man rush we are usually accustomed to in Patriots Defensive schemes?

It depends on how Talib looks and who they line up across from him. If they go more press man to man coverage (which it looks like they are doing) and the safety play improves, the front seven will get much more aggressive. If it backfires, the Patriots will choose to play it safe, as they have throughout the first eight weeks of the season thus far.
