Bill Parcells’ office was right next to the players’ entrance at the old Foxboro Stadium, and the coach’s strict, fear-striking style caused everyone to do their best to sneak by him every morning. Players said when they weren’t called into the office, there were days when they felt it was a victory.

But when Pete Carroll took over in 1997, Foxboro Stadium might as well have been located on the moon. It was a vastly different environment....

First let me state unequivocally that Pete Carroll is no BB. But that being said, I have always thought that Pete Carroll got a really bad rap in his stay in NE. He was put into a terrible position post-Parcells. He had no control over personnel and the football operation. He was the victim of 3 HORRIBLE Bobby Grier drafts. It was like Bobby Grier made the right decision on Terry Glenn, and used up all his good moves ever after. He had some bad luck with injuries. Yet he left here with 2 playoff appearances, a winning record, and 2 Adam Vinetieri clanks from going 10-6 his last year.

The mediots like to paint Carroll as some kind of inappropriate buffoon, but his long term success both as a HC belies that description. No his is isn't Bill Bellichick. He pales in comparison, but then so does just about everyone else. Carroll is a damned good coach who has a lot of respect around the league. Is he different than Bill? Polar opposites in personality, but brothers when it come to their love and respect for the game. He is building a nice program up in Seattle, and is a QB short of it becoming a powerhouse. If Wilson develops into the next Drew Brees, watch out

This is a team that has a defense that has already shut down Dallas and the Packers offense, playing them at home. While this won't be the toughest test for the defense, it could very well be the toughest test the offense has all year. They will be playing some great talent in the most hostile environment in the league.

Totally agree. I thought Felger and the Mouse went way overboard yesterday practically demonizing Carroll as some inept fool. He had one hand tied behind his back while in New England yet he managed a winning record here.

I thought that was why they signed Matt Flynn? You know, the guy that lit us up in 2010 and threw six touchdowns against the Lions at the end of last season?

Essentially, Carroll is basing his decision to start Wilson on only one half of football that resembled the type of competition and talent that Wilson will face every week in the NFL.

Wilson feasted on defenses consisting largely of backups and inexperienced young players, while Flynn faced the first-team defenses of the Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos.

Agreed about Pete. There were times when he was here when I sort of rolled my eyes at things he said, he was placed in a very difficult position. With that said, I thought he acted like a total asshat on the field after the stolen win from GB a couple of weeks ago.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll faces the New England Patriots, the team that fired him in 2000, Sunday. He says he became a different coach before his epic success at USC and his return to the NFL in Seattle.

Compare that to Carroll, who was asked the same question about the similar success he found at USC after a firing. Did he reinvent himself as a coach?

"There's no question," Carroll said.

This wasn't about the X's and O's, but how he related to Jimmy and Joe.

That process started the year he took off from coaching. He read John Wooden's book, "Pyramid of Success," and realized the man went from a good basketball coach at UCLA to a great one. Carroll was struck by the thought that once you figured out how to win, you never had to stop. And if there's a little hubris with Carroll's reference to Wooden, there's also something to be said for Carroll's willingness to point to his improvement as the reason for subsequent success.

"Getting spanked, and getting knocked out of there was a great chance for me to regroup," Carroll said. "And I really found the approach and the language, the specifics, because of the necessity and the competitive opportunity.

"I needed to get my act together or I was never going to get another chance."

Good post except Seattle, IMO, isn't the most hostile environment in the league. I would give that to Oakland and the Black Hole.

You mean he was a bust because he was handed the likes of Chris Canty?

I'll bet Pete's a much better coach than Rex at this point. Pete's been through the crucible. I think he's going to do just fine this time around. It really looks like he has the whole enchilada in Seattle if things go well with Wilson.

Totally agree about Carroll getting a raw deal. The end of his first season he had a totally dominating defense. They lost 7-6, in Pittsburgh, because of injuries to Martin, Glenn, and Coates on offense; the TD happened because Todd Collins did not want to risk hitting Kordell out of bounds and taking a 15 yarder. He also had unfair expectations because Bledsoe was good, but not as great as people thought.

People say he inherited a SB team, but we were at best #2 that year in the AFC -- Jacksonville did the tough job of beating Denver in Denver (which then won by cheating on the salary cap -- i.e., real cheating). Look back at the losing SB teams over the last 15 years and only a minority have amounted to much the next few years -- consider Rams after 01, Panthers after 03, Cardinals, Seahawks after they lost (Pats are an exception -- they ust keep rolling on).

He's not great, but he does not deserve the scorn.

I think Pete's ultimate undoing was that while his SoCal style worked great to attract recruits, he ultimately had little respect among Pro Players - at least when he was here

I remember a Monday Night Football game in November of 98 against Miami

I don't know if there's any video around of it, but Bledsoe was playing with a broken finger, down 23-19, little time left and 4th and 10 with the game on the line.

For all the flack he takes in Brady's shadow, Bledsoe could be a steel eyed competitor and I think Bledsoe knew exactly what needed to be done in that situation and all the guys in the huddle knew it.

As Bledsoe was counting for the snap Pete Carroll was FURIOUSLY calling for a Time Out (back then only players on the field could call time out)

I swear, it looked as if Bledsoe looked right at Carroll, ignored the time out call, took the snap and delivered a bullet to Coates for the First Down that later led to the game winning score.

The official story was that Bledsoe "didn't see him" but I think everyone knew then that Caroll wasn't really in control of the team which is the same as saying the Patriots didn't respect him.

I think that was the beginning of the end for Carroll here - he was fired the next season.

Can you imagine that happening under Belichick? Not that it would have but if it did, Belichick would have benched any player who blatantly ignored something like that.
