Replacement Refs - It has to be said.(Merged X7)

Not sure that any of this the fault of the refs. I believe they are trying to do their best. I wish they were better, but these are scrap heap refs trying hard. Expecting them to be able to manage games like this, which move extremely fast, are played for very high stakes by very intimidating men, in front of thousands of screaming fans with 80 foot high definition televisions in the stands is just asking to much.

This is clearly the fault of the NFL for putting them out there. They are seriously diminishing the product on the field.

I posted about this in week 1, and was pretty much shouted down. Y'all wanted to make some crappy point about how the regular refs suck too. Not delighted to say it, but I told you so.

The part that is astounding to me is how bad they are at basic rules administration. Yesterday in the Cardinals Eagles game, the refs couldn't even get a very basic post-play (dead ball) personal foul administration right. There are clock errors on virtually every play, and they cannot manage the game. Expecting guys who don't even know basic rules to make NFL speed judgment calls is too much. Enough is enough.

They also don't know what forward progress is. Edelman gets hit at the Patriots own 43, gets driven back to the 35, and the ball is spotted at the 37.

Now, even in div. 2, you look at forward progress but clearly these guys are intimidated out there.

If a person living on the other side of the world enjoying a keen interest in the NFL not only knows, but understands the rules by simply reading the NFL rules book, why is it so ******* hard for those charged with officiating the game to know the rules?

Re: Replacement Refs - It has to be said.(Merged X2)

You can't which is exactly why you shouldn't worry about it. If you worry about things you can't control then you will fee like crap and never improve yourself.

That kind of thinking is the problem with this country, let alone a darned FB game. Sheep

The Ravens had maybe 4 bad calls against them the whole game.

The Patriots had closer to 12 bad calls against them the whole game. And the bad calls were in more crucial moments (3rd down, 4th and 1, etc)

I don't even want to watch the replay and take a closer look at what was going on in the trenches. The game was just a complete mess.

I have watched a lot of baseball, basketball, MMA, and football throughout my life... Last night was by far the worst officiating I have seen in any sport. Ever.

No one has yet been able to post a bad call that went against the Ravens. There must be a Raven (or Jet) fan lurking who can give one example!

Re: SuperBowl 47: JAGS Vs RAMS

LOL..you can't even see if he actually touches him

I'm sure he'll get flagged for an illegal touch..every other Patriot did

I actually think there's an answer to that. These guys officiate a different sport -- one with different rules. So, they not only need to learn new rules, they need to unlearn old ones.

And when the refs finally got one right, Collingsworth laid into them. Kept saying there was no illegal contact on Webb's INT because the players weren't beyond 5 yards of the LOS.

And yet the replay shows them clearly 9 yards downfield.

It was embarrassing.

Still, not naming the right penalty is different from missing a call. Webb had Welker wrapped up when the ball was in the air and prevented him from turning around, so PI would have been the right call. They still made a call there.

As someone noted earlier in the thread, we still haven't seen a replay or snapshot of the play where Mayo interfered with a pass in the dirt, which also happened to be the Ravens' first first down of the game.

We, as fans who hear people complain about refs all year long, really are trying to find less blame for the refs somewhere in the universe. I said a million times to my wife last night, "I hate being the guy who blames the refs", but the reality is every crucial stop our struggling defense made was nullified by penalties. The Jones/Love sack would have likely prevented a TD, Flacco threw the ball into the stands, and McCourty got called for holding on 3rd and forever (it might have been 2nd going on 3rd), and the egregious, most appalling call I've seen in a long time: the Edelman offensive PI call. We had a ravens fan over for that game, and his reaction, I repeat, HIS reaction was :confused::wha::eek:

I had the volume off, so I didn't hear this, but that's a baffling point of view from Collinsworth.

I'm no expert, but I think if a defender grabs the receivers jersey and doesn't let go for at least 5 yards, that's some sort of penalty on the defense.

When the league had to pull out a Ref from the game between the Saints and Chiefs hours before the game because someone found out he was a devout fan of the Saints and had pictures of him all dressed up in Saints garb on his Facebook page should have been an automatic recall of these guys and the return of the real guys, the next day.

That might have been the most embarrassing thing of refereeing the NFL in history.

How do we know these guys are not fans of one of the teams they are calling it against?,how do we know they don't have wagers on the game in Vegas as well??....not every replacement ref has pictures on Facebook of his team loyalty.

Collinsworth made the night much more frustrating for me than it should have.
When the call is against us, he is either quite, uses words such as a little push, says things that are in direct contradiction to what is being shown.
When we get a call, clearly states his opinion about how that should not have been a penalty. How our defensive backs are holding and getting away with it, while Lewis is wrestling Gronk to the ground.

Well you can't say they don't considering the kind of crap (officiating) we have to deal with for the foreseeable future.
How'd you like to be a player and try to figure out what you can do and what you can't do? This is going to change the way people play and could really screw them up for a while. How do you coach a guy when you can't be sure you're not coaching him the wrong way, some way that will get him a fistful of holding on Sunday?

The league is full of bullcrap to put the players through this for a peso or two.

Have now fk'd the Packers.

just posted this on my site:

Dear Roger:

Ok, you've had your fun. This little joke you've played on NFL fans has been quite funny, really. I am sure you and your advisers have sat around the offices guffawing on this for months. Wait, wait, wait. (laughter) will put in guys from division II and III, pay them like a third of what the normal guys get. Everyone will lose their mind. It'll be great. We can even find guys that have been fired from the LFL and put them out there. Sports radio knuckleheads will freak! (more laughter)

So, it's been a big laugh, to be sure, but it's time to get back to the real business of football. It's week four already, so the fooling around has to stop. We've watched the replacement guys try to keep up, and it's been entertaining to watch, no doubt. But now you're messing with the biggest sport in the country. Billions of dollars. I know I don't have to tell you about money, because you clearly are all about it. You've shown that the bottom line is indeed the bottom line. But you're walking a very fine line of turning this game into an "Any Given Sunday" caricature of it's former greatness. Enough.

Last night's ending to the Green Bay Packers / Seattle Seahawks showed in stark relief the replacements are simply incompetent. They did not confer, and the did not agree on the call, as we saw. It was a real mess. You're going to roll this circus out another week? Please, come to your senses, man.

It's very clear to me that you are worried about a slew of lawsuits going forward if a precedent is set with the real referees. It's also clear that your cutting your nose off to spite your face. Please put the official NFL referees back on the job this week, before someone re-enacts the opening scene from "The Last Boy Scout". Deal with the minor lawsuits quietly, off the front pages, and lets get back to football. You're quickly destroying the work of greats like Pete Rozelle and others who came before you.

Sincerely,
The fans

One has to wonder... if the real refs are not brought back by season's end, and the replacements end up altering playoff games like they altered the Pats and Packers records, is this year's champion going to be tainted?

Collingsworth was saying it was probably PI and not illegal contact.

Why?

Because he thought the players hadn't run 5 yards downfield.

Some of these games will have already affected playoff seeding, so that cat's out of the bag.

Lingerie Football League released a Statement:

"Because of the LFL's perception it is that much more critical for us to hire officiating crews that are competent, not only for the credibility of our game but to keep our athletes safer. Due to several on-field incompetent officiating we chose to part ways with with a couple crews which apparently are now officiating in the NFL. We have a lot of respect for our officials but we felt the officiating was not in line with our expectations. We have not made public comment to date because we felt it was not our place to do so. However in light of tonight's event, we felt it was only fair that NFL fans knew the truth as to who are officiating these games."
