Field Goal Posts

What made me mad was that they wouldn't review it. For the last couple of years it has been "ALL scoring plays are reviewable." They can't say All are reviewable except .....

Rule changes need to be made. Use new technology if you have to.

Yes, they can. And they did. Rule 15, Section 9:
Note: Non-Reviewable plays include but not limited to:
8) Field goal or Try attempts that cross above either upright without touching anything.

Probably an over-sight by the rules committee..

They should freaking lazers in the top of the goal posts that shoot straight up, if the ball passes over the top it explodes.

Now THAT would be cool.

I'm still in shock over this loss.
I'm confident part of the ball was outside of the posts(meaning kick was no good) and on top of that the officiating was the worst of all time.

just so angry.

Then the rule should be changed.

Have we dropped this low about complaining about changing the goal posts or doing laser additions primarily because of last night's game?

This topic has never come up before until today

Its as stupid as not complaining about putting a stop sign on the end of your street until your family member gets killed going through the intersection.

Come on, lasers shooting down foot balls sounds like fun for every one.

That isn't the rule. The rule says that the ball must pass through the plane of the Goal Post. The plane is defined by the the area from the crossbar up and the outside of one upright to the outside of the other.

.

Doesn't this actually support my interpretation? Even if just a piece of the ball went through the plane, didn't the ball still go through the plane?

After all, when a runner reaches for the endzone and we say he broke the plane, we are not saying the whole ball went over but at least a piece of it did.

Don't correct someone if you don't actually know the rule, ffs.

Sorry, dude. That's at least the rule as I knew it in 2003 when the same issue arose when the same thing happened in the Pats-Dolphins game. Maybe the rule changed since then.

But whatever, that's what forum conversations are for, good discussion.

Obviously we're going to notice things when they, you know, come up. We're not actually responsible for changing the rules.

Instead of making the goal posts taller, we should install some fricking laser beams at the top of the uprights.

Now if only we could find a way to work in some sharks we'd really up the ratings ...

It's the 2nd decade of the 21st century and the NFL refuses to use inexpensive easily available technology to ensure accurate game calls. Laser monitoring and positioning is not rocket science. This is on the owners. And partly on us fans for consuming the product unquestioningly.

This is so true. How great is the light up backboards in the NBA? A ton of controversy never becomes a controversy because of technology.

This is not true at all this is and has been a topic in sports for a long time. There is a constant debate in sports about the use of technology in making the sports better vs taking out the human element that makes them sport. Instant replay has been an ongoing debate since it come out decades ago and was used discontinued and now used again in the NFL.

I am not sure about lasers or RFIDs on the goal posts but I definitely recall discussing using them on yard markers. Ever since TV started using them on the broadcasts there has been talk of them actually being in the sticks and used to determine 1st downs instead of wasting everyones time with the inexact science of running the chain crew off and on the field.

I keep reading in AP stories this AM that replays clearly showed the kick was good.

Did I miss some new video angle being shown overnight or something?

As much as I hate to say this, It was good. Barely, but good.

But it never should have come down to it. I though BB should have gone for two point conversions TWICE and, of course, the officiating in the final three minutes was abominable. It was ALMOST abominable for the rest of the game.

Very flawed logic.

By general rule always let your opponent be the one that has to risk the two point conversation plays. its very simple had we gone for the 2 attempts you are speaking of and missed them both you would have been in a worse situtation then you were as instead of trying to protect the lead on the last drive you would have been praying for overtime. On the flip side had we been able to score one more TD we would have been up 16 and the pressure would have been on the Ravens to convert 2 conversions just for a tie.

I just couldn't believe the new kicker replacing Cundiff almost whiffed a gimmi FG in this "revenge game". That would have been truly priceless.

That being said, I hope we see them again this season.

the nfl is becoming a joke. that's two weeks in a row that bad calls have cost us.

Bad calls wasn't the reason we lost....giving up 500 yards & 31 points cost us!!

Just extend the stupid post 20 more feet, issue resolved. Of course that would be too easy.

Losing 12 seconds of gametime after the defense gets caught with 12 men on the field doesn't happen that often either. But we remember what happened in the SB. These things happen and even though they are rare situations, they still need to be addressed.
