Could The Patriots Be the Permanent Visiting Team For The NFL London Game?

In terms of the first point, I think the sport is so well established over here that we probably wouldn't gain a huge amount of followers simply because the support is pretty tribal, and people that watched the sport in the 80's and picked their team then, now have children that they have managed to coerce into following the same team. For example, and I'm quite proud of this, I was in a sports shop last weekend with the family and we were checking out the NFL gear they had, and my missus picked up a Jets hat to look at ("I like the green") - my daughter started booing. She then took it off her and handed her a Patriots one. And she's only 9!

Even though we're not in one of the large cities in the UK, I know plenty of NFL fans and the older guys have managed to get their kids to follow the same team, which is a story that's pretty common if you check out the various UK based NFL forums.

As for the second part, I'm in full agreement. The UK market could be an untapped cash cow, and if having a team here starts attracting interest from Europe, that's an even bigger bonus, because the game is incredibly popular in countries like Germany. All 32 owners will want some part of that.

Brit

Do you think the family nature of American sports would translate across the pond? (Beyond niche/novelty)

A few years back, I was at a baseball game and the Dutch guy next to me asked why so many kids were at the game.

I watch the ice hockey over here and that is a family sport compared to the likes of football.

As a fan over here I'd be more than happy with an annual Pats game to attend :D

Honestly, what is NOT to like about this idea.

I mean, let's face it, IF the Pats are the permanent away team that means that they essentially become the HOME team over there. That means there will be 9 games every year in which the Patriots have home field advantage. I would think it would be the other teams that cry foul over this.

Holy freakin crap I hope not. It's great for US as Pats fans, but it's horrible for the NFL. Our team doesn't deserve, or need, preferential treatment for the betterment of the business purposes of this league. It will only fuel the haters more. Absolute NO.

Yes, exactly. What you see as awesome I see as a huge problem and an affront to the spirit of this league.

Please dear god never let this happen.

The Rams are signed up to play in London for three years, so the earliest that the Patriots could play there again is 2015.

As for a permanent visiting team, I doubt that will happen. Circumstances change year to year, which result in changes in what teams would want to play there and what teams would not be interested in doing so.

Having a permanent visiting team results in the choices for the London game being reduced from 256 options to just 16 choices. Now figure in games that each of the four network wants to retain as a premier game (night game for NBC and ESPN; 4:25 game for CBS and Fox) and you are suddenly down to only about ten games to choose from each year.

That extremely limited number of games for the schedule makers to work with probably makes the concept of any team playing in the UK on an annual basis highly doubtful.

I'd prefer the Pats never play outside of the US, at least that far away, but that's never going to happen. No offense to our UK fans, it's just the way I see it. I'll be willing to give you soccer back in trade!

I've been reading this thread and all along I was thinking "am I the only one who realizes the Rams are committed to London for the next 3 years and we don't play them again until 2016 (and not on the road until 2020)?"

I got two posts from the end of the thread before discovering that yes, someone else did remember that. :D

Theoretically the NFL could honor the Rams' commitment and throw in a 2nd game featuring the Patriots but realistically any talk of 2 games in London is still in the early early early stage.
