The 2013 Prospect Thread

Charlie Campbell of Walter Football profiles Alabama FS Robert Lester:

Skill-Set Summary: Lester is a good overall free safety who defends the deep part of the field well. He has more ballhawking skills than most safety prospects and will have three years of starting experience entering the NFL. Lester has good instincts and does a good job of reading a quarterback's eyes. He covers a lot of ground in the deep part of field. He has nice closing speed and rarely is caught out of position.

Lester is a technically sound tackler in the ground game. He is also versatile because of his size. He is big enough to be an in-the-box run defender with the speed to cover the deep part of the field in pass coverage. Lester projects to being a good man-cover safety on tight ends and receivers. With three years starting in the SEC, Lester should be able to play quickly after getting drafted.

2013 Draft Expectations: If Lester has a big senior season, he could be a first-round pick. Both Barron and Lester had massive sophomore campaigns followed by down junior years. Barron was excellent as a senior, and that rebounded his draft stock. Lester could follow that pattern. If, however, he duplicates his junior year Lester should be a second-day selection. It looks like a potentially packed safety class, and that could push Lester lower than he would go in a typical draft.

Hester and Lester in the 2ndary then eh? :rocker:

Here's a solid vid of Lester showing his all around ability:

Robert Lester NFL Draft Analysis - 2010 Season - YouTube

Its really looking to be a good year for safeties after such a horrible class this past draft. There's 5 guys I'd be very happy with for 2013-Reid, McDonald, Rambo, Mathieu, Lester, etc.

The 2nd round of this coming draft is going to be an absolute goldmine for picks.

That's for sure. Depending on the juniors, the talent from 33-50 may be as good as the 16-32 range.

I was thinking about this a bit more. So I took a look at the positional breakdown over the past 4 drafts, and then at the likely positional depth for 2013.

From 2009-2012 the rough positional breakdown in the first 2 rounds was as follows:

QB: 17 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of just over 4/year
RB: 20 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of 5/year
WR: 30 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of 7.5/year
TE: 7 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of just under 2/year
OT: 30 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of 7.5/year
OG/C: 17 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of just over 4/year
DT: 28 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of 7/year
DE: 20 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of 5/year
DE/OLB: 25 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of just over 6/year
LB: 20 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of 5/year
DB: 41 taken in the first 2 rounds, for an average of just over 10/year

That works out to just under 64 players taken in the first 2 rounds/year, which is about right (New Orleans had no 2nd round pick in 2012). There is some ambiguity about how to classify defensive players, but the numbers generally add up.

The 2013 draft seems to be particular deep at the QB, DT, DE/OLB and DB positions. The #4-7 DTs, 4-6 DE/OLBs, and 6-10 DBs might go in the 2nd round, for example. The list might include guys like Jesse Williams, John Jenkins, Tyrann Mathieu, Eric Reid, Robert Lester, TJ McDonald, Michael Buchanon, Dion Jordan, Margus Hunt, William Gholston, Bjoern Warner, Khaled Holmes, Jonathan Cooper and Joseph Fauria, among others. Some of those will undoubtedly end up in the 1st round, but not all of them. It's probably going to be a much stronger 2nd round than last year, and one of the strongest in recent memory. Again, a lot will depend on how many underclassmen declare.

Draftinsider scouts 2013 prospects from the MAC:

Scouting for the 2013 NFL Draft: The MAC

Sounds like some nice developmental day 3 guys with upside, FWIW. Northern Illinois' DB combo of safety Dechene Durante (6'3" 190#) and CB Rashaan Melvin (6'1" 190#) sounds intriguing. Some guys to keep an eye on.

Mike Loyko of NE Patriots' Draft looks at senior prospects from the ACC:

Oday Aboushi, Jonathan Cooper, Omoregie Uzzi, Sylvester Williams, Andre Ellington, Conner Vernon, Brandon Jenkins, among others. Not a bad group.

Florida St is really loaded. Their junior class is strong as well. I was reading Phil Steele's college preview and he is enamored with them. He has them going all the way!

I haven't heard anyone say that about FSU in 15 years! It really is a special group.

NE Patriots' Draft profiles Maryland S/LB hybrid Kenny Tate:

Kenny Tate is a productive and versatile (FS, SS, OLB, Pass Rusher, Special Teams) defender that will need to show in 2012 that he has fully recovered from his somewhat mysterious injury that sidelined him for most of the 2011 season. Tate’s football IQ, instincts and tenacity should help him overcome his high 4.5 speed in the NFL. He rarely takes false steps and seems break very early on the ball.

I was pretty high on this kid 2 years ago when he almost came out as a redshirt sophomore for the 2010 draft. His stock seems to have taken a hit since then, and I'm not sure where he fits. But he's still intriguing.

It would be the first time that FSU lives up to the expectations in quite some time. No one has done less with more in college football lately.
