Great draft for LB and Secondary, but what are we doing at DT?

The issue I have with Deaderick and Fanene starting is that they are the same type of player. We'll basically have both of our DE's 1-gapping which leaves more chances for our ILBs to make mistakes as they will be responsible for multiple holes.

Huh? Deaderick and Fanene are nowhere like each other.
And we won't tell DEs to 1gap if we play a 2gap scheme.

Deaderick is a classic 2gap 34 DE.
Fanene is much more of a pass rusher who has played a lot in one gap schemes. We don't have a lot to go on for his 2gap base D skills, but he is a quality DL.
IMO, he is first and foremost a sub package DT, but since that is 50-60% of the snaps, I have no real problem if that is all he is.

If god forbid Wilfork gets injured I could see the defensive line competing for worst in the NFL. Whose his backup now, Ron Brace? The Patriots are putting all their eggs in one basket for the defensive line this year.

This is certainly the biggest area of concern on this team.
I think you are severly overating Pryor. He was never a starter. He has played as an inside rusher in the sub, but has been a major disappointment IMO.
He has been on the team 3 years and has 1 total sack (actually 2 halfs) has played in only 11 of the last 36 games, and 3 games since the middle of 2010.
Right now, if we had a game tomorrow, I think this is how we would line up.

34
LDE Deaderick
NT Wilfork
RDE Fanene
-Brace should be at DE based on ability and play on the field, but something is holding him back
-Love at NT with VW at DE is a possibility/sub move
-I value Fanene heavily in sub so would like to limit his play in base to less than full time

43
LDE Deaderick/Fanene
DT Wilfork
DT Love

-Brace backs up the DTs.

SUB
2 of these guys play inside
Fanene is one
The second choice from this group doesn't thrill me

Also, I think the D we played last year won't be the D we play this year, because as BB has said it was installed for simplicity, because it wasn't very good, and because we moved much more to 34 at the end of the season.

The only thing disappointing about Pryor has been his health. He looked good his rookie year, got hurt, came back this year and looked very good in the opener against Miami, and then he got hurt again. For a sixth-rounder, he's been a pretty interesting player. I agree that it's now or never for the guy -- if he gets hurt again, he has to go -- but we've all seen that when he actually plays, he's disruptive.

Seymour types are relatively rare but you can find them. Remember, the Patriots picked him up at 6 in the 1st. You have to pick very high to get players like him. JJ Watt, for instance, was picked above us last year. He had similar measurables to Seymour.

Fanene was brought in to be an interior pass rusher in subpackages while Deaderick is more of a two gapping DE in the 3-4 and DT in the 4-3. Fanene will be one gapping much more than Deaderick will. But I do agree that the team should have looked into the DL. It's a need and, at the very least, it would help spell Wilfork who saw an astronomical amount of snaps last year.

If Deaderick is the second best DL and you can't really name the 3rd best, its not a good DL. (I am not counting the guy who is DE in the 43 or OLB in the 34.

The Pats won Super Bowls with Bobby Hamilton and Anthony Pleasant (who was picked off the scrap heap) as arguably their second best d-lineman. And in 2001, Seymour wasn't Seymour yet.

I don't dispute the d-line could have used an upgrade. I am disputing it is as big of problem that the original poster suggested. I also dispute that Deadrick isn't a starter. He sure played like one down the stretch and in the playoffs.

What makes you assume that they didn't look into the DL and simply found them lacking in the skills for our system or not as good as the guys here already?

They have been keeping in contact with Andre and I expect him back in beast mode, quad be damned.

Big, versatile linebackers have always been BB's bread and butter and I'm happy that he found some that he likes (finally).

Not a lot of loving for Kyle Love here. I think people underrate him for some reason.

I was just about to say the same. I have absolutely no issue with Love starting whichever front they're in.

Played great against the Ravens, horrid against the Giants. Got benched. Jury is still out.

Tom Curran tweeting that pats will re-up Big Money. Gerard Warren. I thought he played well last year. Glad he's coming back for some un-finished business. I'd like to have six fatties for our defense. Wilfork, Deaderick, Fanene and K. Love. Warren would be the 5th. Last spot comes down to; Pryor, Harrison, Brace and Fortson. No idea which one BB likes best. I think the 4-2-5 is your base defense. That gives you 6 fatties to rotate into the two interior spots with enough depth to play the conventional 3-4 on some 1st down plays.

Both Deaderick and Love took turns getting benched in the 2nd half of the SB in favor of Ellis/Warren. Wilfork was the only DT that Belichick fully trusted in that game. I think that says something.

Next year's draft will be DT and S?

I was talking about 3-4 DE's. Not 4-3. On top of that, BB's style has never been to build from the LB's in. That was his predecessor. BB's style has always been to build from the DL out.

Re-signing Warren

Nah, S is all set now that we have that stud Tavon Wilson back there!

BTW I like Deaderick, he's a good all-around player and well help a lot in the DL rotation. He's just not yet on the level of someone like Ty Warren use to be.

Thats kind of my point. As a 6th round pick no one expected anything from he has been a nice surprise. As a football player in general, outside of the low expectations, he hasn't show me much.
You post illustrates it. When he makes any play, or actually just comes close to making a play, people are surprised and think its good.
