Welcome Alfonzo Dennard

I hope he turns out to be better than his former teammate Prince Amakumuru, who was overhyped and did not impress last year.

Good thing we didn't draft him top-20 like the Gints.

they wanted Solder, but we got to him first, and they settled for amukamara one pick later.

Great pick....would have been a worthwhile chance to take earlier....a no brainer in te 7th round

One question though......how did he get by the Rams....?

psshh...how'd he get by the bengals??

What I love about him from watching few Nebraska games and doing a couple of his games on video is that, he is good in press man coverage.

He is now a pro athlete..he will get treated "right" and get probation

Patriots wouldn't have taken a flyer on him without inquiring into his legal situation.

seriously though. this kid appears to be high round talent from all the mocks.

if anyone can get him to fly straight BB can; but between the ejection and punching a cop the weekend before the draft this kid may be walking in the footsteps of BM (pro-bowl traded dui). Let's hope not and that we get someone who wants nothing but to rebound from all this.

Sounds like he has a chip on his shoulder, which is absolutely great if it translates onto the football field. Don't think you can necessarily compare him the Merriweather, who doesn't have a lick of sense both on and off the field. Dennard may have a short trigger AND his off-field issues could continue, but it's a pretty good bet that he is a more intelligent football player than BM was.

Sometimes players with 1st round talent who actually get taken in the 1st round don't pan out (Vernon Gholston comes to mind). I'm rooting for the kid, I'd love to add a top talent to the CB group, but his issues were enough to drop him 5 or 6 rounds. That's not Hernandez dropping a round or two for pot, it's a bit more troublesome than that. I'm just saying, expectations shouldn't be raised for him just because he has first round talent.

Right.

To put it another way -- if any team thought he had even a 25% chance of making it past his character concerns, why didn't they take him higher than the 7th round?

As a huge nebraska and patriots fan, I absolutely love and cannot believe that we got Dennard...in the 7th round!!! I have seen Dennard play every game over the past three years, and he is an absolute stud. Pretty much every husker fan I've talked to agrees that Fonzie was a better player than Prince. A good story came out about him after the Okie State game last year. Prince was getting abused by Blackmon in the first half, and at halftime Fonzie told the staff to put him on Blackmon and that he would shut him down. In the second half he did just that. Every game he would make multiple plays where all you could do was just shake your head in amazement. In press man he is unbelievable, think Darrelle Revis. As for his character, in all of his time at UNL there was never anything but good things said about the guy. I think this year that Prince leaving and all the preseason hype got to his head a little bit. He is very intense in both practices and games, and perhaps that carried over off the field with the incident involving the police. I highly doubt he will be anything but a great player in New England, and in the future he will be regarded as one of the biggest draft steals ever. I know I'm rambling and drinking a bit too much kool aid, but I just cannot believe he fell to the 7th round.

How the hell did he fall to the 7th? Wow--that incident must have REALLY spooked everyone (except Belickick maybe :p) Sounds like the ultimate high risk/high reward type guy (except the seventh round for that kind of talent is hardly risky). Plus he pretty much has to become a solid citizen now, otherwise he could end up driving a UPS truck in two years if BB keeps him inactive.

A+ pick. Belichick wins again.

Are you saying that his known problems with anger and/or character are confined to the past year?

That would be grounds for optimism if true.

Yes I would say that his anger/character issues are overblown. Without the fight in the bowl game and the incident with the police he is at worst a second rounder. Punching a cop is disturbing, and I think he is an absolute moron for even being in that situation with his career on the line, but young guys do stupid things, especially when they're drunk. Like I said, the entire time he was at Nebraska up until the fight with Alshon Jeffrey, all you ever heard about the guy was that he was a team leader and a great person. I am completely opposed to his actions over the past months, but just going by what I've seen there is little to no risk of him becoming a problem in the future. The only issue is that he could face prison time, but that is unlikely seeing as it is a 3rd degree offense that will probably get bumped down to a misdemeanor. Not trying to be a sunshine pumper about Dennard, just trying to speak objectively from Cornhusker country.

So he's allowed to hold against accepted NFL edict requiring over the top Safety help? ;)

If he stays calm cool and collected, this kid will climb the depth charts faster than King Kong a tall building.

As a junior he outplayed Prince Amurawhateverkaka, whom the Giants took last year in the first.

After the Tavon Wilson debacle, this rinses out the bad taste in my mouth. We get a second round talent in the 7th round and a 7th round talent in the second. Whatever. It works for me.

i don't understand how Tavon Wilson is a debacle without him having played a single snap as a patriot.

And he hit a police officer too..............

Where I come from thats an instant fan favourite.

Would attacking a fan make you a bigger fan? ;)

Lets see what Wilson can bring before we are so pessimistic. Obviously teams had him in for a workout and BB likes him så just hang on for atleast a while before passing the judgement. Also theres plenty to be happy about the draft for one strange pick to ruin it.

My only question is, how do you defend a pass with your hands handcuffed behind your back?
