John Henry is on record as not wanting to sign Crawford because he - correctly - understood
that the everyday lineup would become too left-handed, and therefore too easy to pitch against.

So who in ownership wanted to blow him out of the water? Lucchino?

I heard that interview with Henry as well and his reasoning was/is sound. In fact, even though Crawford was one of my favorite players before coming to Boston, I had a similar concern.

The article I read, and I can't seem to find it now but I'm 99% certain it was in the Globe, referred to both the Crawford and Lackey signings as "ownership signings" not "baseball operations" signings. FWIW, they also referred to the money offered Dice-K in the same way. The ownership group saw it as a chance to spread the brand to Japan as the signings of Pedro and co. did to the Dominican. Henry, Werner, and Luchino saw it as a larger investment than a "regular" player.

I am so proud to be a Patriots fan, that we wear are true colors in other stadiums, this is the wife and I at Philly last year, and our bus proudly in front of the stadium.Speaking of high prices it seems to be a wave of it amongst our New England area Professional Franchises,I remember when you could get a sox ticket for 6 bucks and people would give you for free a 16 dollah patriots ticket, mine are now 169 OUCH,I have been in the lowers at other stadiums recently and face was 69-104 oh well
GO PATS

Bankofamericasox ... stick-and-ball ... fried chicken and beer ... team GM in gorilla suit ... crappy, ancient, cramped little rundown stadium with outrageous ticket prices and lemming fan base ... poorly conditioned "athletes" ... boring "sport" ... sit in uncomfortable seat ... eat overpriced food, talk on your cell phone, talk to your neighbor, read the newspaper, occasionally glance at non-action on the field ... spoiled, crybaby players ... wimpy, clueless owner ... call and complain on WEEI ... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ...

Twentythree,

Is that your own personal Pats Gameday Wagon?

If so, you are one serious Pats fan.

Francona was one of the very best managers the Red Sox ever had, and he was generally polite and gracious with his time. Valentine is a putz who eventually alienates himself from every MLB team he goes to. That might have something to do with it.

You're right about Francona. The other piece of this picture is the role of Larry Lucchino who is no Jonathan Kraft. Lucchino is so completely jealous of Francona and Theo Epstein that he made life miserable for those guys and crapped on them on their way out the door.

Valentine may know what he is doing with this bunch of players. Throwing Youkilis under the bus unified his guys in a way reminiscent of Bill Parcells calling out his guys to amp up their energy and anger, and focus it on him. I do not think Valentine is that smart, but maybe he has a plan.

Where the hell is the GM in this? If Youkilis is a slug (4ks in 4 ABs after the calling out suggests he is) why isn't his ass in Houston or KC in exchange for a young pitcher or two? Belichick benches and unloads cancers on the team faster than you can say lumpectomy.

The GM has already said he disagreed with Valentine. Remember, Cherrington didn't want Bobby...

The Wayland Ladies Auxiliary Croquet team is wrapping up preseason workouts. Tough schedule this year starting out with three road games.

How do you account for the franchise that makes you want to vomit winning 2 championships since 04 when the one you call the best run of any sport won its last?
Not trashing the Patriots here, but pointing out that your comments about the Red Sox are pretty short sighted.

No the comments are right on. The Red Sox are, and have been an embarrassment ever since the Boston pols were allowed to double crossed them. They sold the only consistent southpaw 20 game winner to the hated Yankees, and let the team-warping, Fenway Monstrosity endure for a hundred years.

For those without a sanity meter?

In other news, scientists recently announced that pea gravel is inanimate.
