Did you ever see the NFLN show where Gruden was supposedly developing Simms? There is a reason Gruden has never developed a young QB and only succeeded with grizzled vets who could tune him out... Simms never had a shot on many levels. Where you land does matter. That said, those who can't often make the best teachers while those who can often can't relate well to others... Not to mention entry level jobs in the NFL pay like crap. Simms at least made enough in his time in the league that he can afford to intern. Perhaps he's a very bright young guy who is willing to learn. Those are the kinds of entry level assistants Bill is always on the lookout for. This one will also speak the language to a greater extent than perhaps someone who didn't grow up literally immersed in the NFL.
I said "If he earns a spot, so be it".
Having said that, I watched Applewhite beat out the taller stronger son of an NFL quarterback, then lose his job for no reason other than they were trying to push the more physically imposing Simms and took the job from the one who deserved it until...
Simms was handed the starting job in 2011, but couldn't finish.
Brady encountered the same thing, but had more physical ability. I always wished the Applewhite had a greed to become a backup (he was pursued by the Pats) cause i know he would have had at least one or two eye popping comebacks (though he was too small for an NFL guy, not even athletic like Flutie).
Seriously, Applewhite was the greatest field general this side of Tom Brady. Unfortunately, he was a small, slightly built guy.
Don't want to belabor the pint, stats tell a lot, but not as much as watching a guy for four years. Simms major attributes back then were a strong arm, 6'5" and a daddy in the NFL, none of which you can teach someone.
